Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 3rd Tone

Let the heavens sing for joy, and let everything on earth be glad. * For with His Arm the Lord has worked power. * He trampled death under foot by means of death; * and He became the firstborn from the dead. * From the maw of Hades He delivered us; * and He granted the world His great mercy.

Apolytikion of Sun. of the Elevation of the Cross in the First Tone

Save, O Lord, Thy people and bless Thine inheritance; grant Thou unto the faithful victory over adversaries. And by the power of Thy Cross do Thou preserve Thy commonwealth.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal 4th Tone

O Champion General, I your city now inscribe to your triumphant anthems as the tokens of my gratitude, being rescued from the terrors, O Theotokos. Inasmuch as you have power unassailable, from all kinds of perils free me, so that unto you I may cry aloud: Rejoice, O unwedded Bride.

Sunday of the Holy Cross

With the help of God, we have almost reached the middle of the course of the Fast, where our strength has been worn down through abstinence, and the full difficulty of the labour set before us becomes apparent. Therefore our holy Mother, the Church of Christ, now brings to our help the all-holy Cross, the joy of the world, the strength of the faithful, the staff of the just, and the hope of sinners, so that by venerating it reverently, we might receive strength and grace to complete the divine struggle of the Fast.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal 2nd Tone. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6.

BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek."

Gospel Reading

Sunday of the Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Parish News

A Word from Fr. John:

From the Sayings of the Desert Fathers (adopted from the translation by Helen Waddell):

“The abbot Antony [St. Anthony the Great – Fr. John] said, ‘He who sits in solitude and is quiet has escaped from three wars: hearing, speaking, and seeing. Yet, against one thing shall he continually battle: that is, his own heart.’”

“The abbess Matrona said, ‘It is better to have many about you, and to live the solitary life in your will, than to be alone, and the desire of your mind to be with the crowd.’”

“There were three earnest men who loved one another, and they became monks. And one of them chose to bring to accord such as take the law of each other [a sort of monastic, volunteer “legal adviser”? – Fr. John], according to that which is written: ‘Blessed are the peacemakers.’ The second chose to visit the sick. But the third went away to be quiet in solitude.

“Now the first, toiling amidst the contentions of men, was not able to appease them all. And overcome with weariness, he came to him who tended the sick, and found him also failing in spirit and unable to carry out his purpose. And the two agreed together and went away to see him who had withdrawn into the desert, and they told him their tribulations; and they asked him to tell them how he himself had fared.

“He was silent for a while. And then he poured water into a vessel and said, ‘Look upon the water.’ And it was murky. After a little while he said again, ‘Look now, how clear the water has become.’ And as they looked into the water, they saw their own faces as in a mirror. Then he said to them: ‘So is he who abides in the midst of men. Because of the turbulence, he sees not his sins; but when he has been quiet, above all in solitude, then he recognizes himself as he is.’”

Sunday School News:  March 31 (Sunday of the Holy Cross) and April 21 (Palm Sunday) the students will remain in church for the Feast day.  One of the things parents constantly ask is how to keep their children involved in Church during Lent and interested in attending the extra services. As parents we struggle to find balance between every day activities (both theirs and ours) and our own and our children’s spiritual lives.    This blog has 40 ideas for parents to keep their kids interested in Lent:  http://www.orthodoxmom.com/2019/03/13/40-activities-for-great-lent/ that are ways to help our kids stay connected.

Iconography Update:  Our iconographer Aristidis Kovaci has begun work on the Pantocrator and Prophets in his studio in Orange Park.  He will assemble the icons, paint the background, and write the inscriptions here in our church.  Installation of the icons will take about 10-14 days, and during that time, because of the scaffolding, we will have services in the Fellowship Hall.  We look forward watching the iconography installation after Pascha, in May, and its completion before Pentecost.

Philoptochos - March 31 Lenten Luncheon: Please join us today, Sunday, March 31st, as Philoptochos honors the Annunciation of the Theotokos and Greek Independence Day with a fish luncheon. $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.  No advance purchase necessary.

Greek Summer Night:  SAVE THE DATE.  Greek Summer Night will be Saturday, June 1, 2019, featuring DJ Arista from Tarpon Springs.  Join us for an evening of fun, fellowship and family.  Opa!

Stewardship – A Pattern of Caring:Giving is a habit that begins with a commitment. Becoming an active steward requires a conscious decision to actively support the needs of the church. The commitment card we offer to Holy Trinity parish each year encourages us to give regularly. There are extra cards in church, or you can call the church office.
