A Word from Fr. Maximos

 “Whosoever will come after Me”

In the Gospel reading, on Sunday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, we hear the Lord say to his hearers, "Let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me." All of us, at least those of us who come to church, are Christians. Even many of those who do not attend church, if we ask them, will answer categorically that they are Christians. This sounds nice since the vast majority of the society where we live are Christians. For Christ, however, the Christian quality is manifested by specific actions. This is what the previous exhortation reveals: "Whoever wants to be my disciple, whoever wants to be called a Christian, is called to deny, or, better yet, to renounce himself daily, to carry the cross which God has assigned to him, and to follow me."

Many people today misinterpret the words of Christ and stop at the freedom that Christ gives us to follow Him or not. But Christ does not say that. He says that if we decide to follow Him, freely, we must obey His teaching in every aspect of our lives. Let us not see this as a oppression command  that urges man to feel in bondage. On the contrary, it is often the cohesive factor of a harmonious social life.

The elementary core of society is the family and from there begins the practice of the Lord's commands. We often see young people with all the conditions, in theory, for harmonious coexistence. They have all the supplies to build their future. They have education, spiritual cultivation, small or large financial comfort and everything else one imagines it takes to have what we call "live long and prosper". Unfortunately, there are times when the storm and the shipwreck come. What is the cause of evil? Of course, one cannot cover all cases in one word. But often behind such problems is selfishness and lack of self-denial. Family life is not a deal where one offers according to what he expects. It is a permanent resignation from the personal will. People who have realized this truth, really carry the Cross of the Lord and experience from this life the goods that await them in the other, namely peace, salvation and sanctification.

On August 19, 2021, His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta wrote: "it is important to consider that late last week, the CDC published its latest guidelines which reads: “Use masks to slow the spread of COVID-19 in which they state that masks should be worn by those, “including children older than 2, who are not fully vaccinated [and] fully vaccinated people with weakened immune systems.”  Finally, the CDC writes “To maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others, fully vaccinated people should wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission."

In accordance with the wishes of our Metropolitan, we encourage all parishioners to resume wearing masks to slow the spread of the Delta variant.  Whether one chooses to wear a mask or not, all are welcome!

"...the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:14

Small Vespers and Newcomers Reception:  We are excited to announce a new family outreach event that we hope will be welcomed by all. Please join us in church for Small Vespers on Wednesday, September 29 at 6:00 pm.  This is an opportunity for all to come together to welcome all newcomers to our community as well as to share and fellowship with one another.  We will have a small Lenten potluck after vespers for all to gather around the table to ask questions, share ideas and to connect.  We hope this will become a monthly event as we continue into the new ecclesiastical year.

Special Prayer Requests: Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”  (Phil. 4:6-7)

greece fires

Fires in Greece Collection: On August 15, 2021, parishioners generously donated $489 for relief of the catastrophic fires in Greece. The parish council voted to match that amount from our Outreach Reserve funds. The total contribution from our parish sent to the Archdiocese-IOCC combined relief fund was $978.

Greece Fires Relief Update:  The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese announced on August 24 that, following the launch of the Greece Fires Relief Fund, more than $750,000 has been raised to provide support and long-term assistance in the aftermath of the devastating fires.  More than $300,000 has been collected from individuals and parishes, including the online fundraising efforts.

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros commented, “These past weeks have been filled with sorrow and pain as we have watched the fires in Greece consume so much of our beloved Motherland, and yet at the same time, the faithful of the Archdiocese have responded in an overwhelming measure. Today, as we are made aware of our current fundraising efforts, I call upon the entire Omogenia, the faithful, the parishes, the Philoptochos chapters, the youth groups, the schools, the regional federations and all our brothers and sisters to continue donating whatever you can, to help us reach at least $1 million, so that we can offer impactful assistance.”

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 4th Tone

When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Holy Cross in the 1st Tone

Save, O Lord, Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting victory to the faithful over the enemy, and by Your Cross protecting Your commonwealth.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 4th Tone

You who were lifted on the cross voluntarily, O Christ our God, bestow Your tender compassions upon Your new community to which You gave Your name. Cause our faithful emperors to be glad in Your power, granting them the victories against their adversaries. And for an ally, Lord, may they have You, peace as their armor, the trophy invincible.

Trophimus, Sabbatius, & Dorymedon the Martyrs

In 278, during the reign of Probus, Saints Trophimus and Sabbatius came to Antioch, and seeing the city celebrating the festival of Apollo at Daphne lamented the blindness of the people, and presented themselves as Christians to Atticus the Governor. Saint Trophimus was stripped of his clothing, and was stretched out and beaten until the earth was red with his blood. Then he was hung up, scraped on his sides, and imprisoned in torments. Saint Sabbatius was tortured so savagely that he gave up his spirit in his sufferings. Trophimus was sent to Synnada, wearing iron shoes fitted with sharp iron nails within; he was further tormented without mercy, then cast into prison. Dorymedon, a counsellor, and a pagan, came to the prison and cared for Trophimus. When a certain feast came, Dorymedon was asked why he did not sacrifice to the idols; he proclaimed himself a Christian, for which he was imprisoned, pierced with heated spits, frightfully punished, and finally beheaded with Saint Trophimus.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. 4th Tone. Psalm 103.24,1.
O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20.

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."
