The stone had been secured with a seal by the Judeans, * and a guard of soldiers was watching Your immaculate body. * You rose on the third day, O Lord * and Savior, granting life unto the world. * For this reason were the powers of heaven crying out to You, O Life-giver: * Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ; * glory to Your eternal rule; * glory to Your dispensation, only One who loves mankind.

Apolytikion for Annunciation of the Theotokos in the Fourth Mode

Today is the fountainhead of our salvation and the manifestation of the mystery which was from eternity. The Son of God becometh the Virgin's Son, and Gabriel announceth the good tidings of grace; for this cause, let us cry to the Mother of God with him: Rejoice, thou who art full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

    The Reading is from Luke 1:39-49, 56

    In those days, Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and she entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord."

    And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name." And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home.

    My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

    The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 2:11-18.

    BRETHREN, he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, "I will proclaim thy name to my brethren, in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee." And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Here am I, and the children God has given me. Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage. For surely it is not with angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you! Blessed are you among women!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.

    And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible."     Wisdom of the Fathers

    But the head of every good endeavor and the guiding force of right actions is perseverance in prayer. By means of it we can daily obtain the rest of the virtues by asking God for them. By this means are engendered in those deemed worthy the fellowship of God's holiness and of spiritual energy and the attachment of the mind disposed toward the Lord in ineffable love. For the person who daily forces himself to persevere in prayer is enflamed with divine passion and fiery desire from a spiritual love toward God, and he receives the grace of the sanctifying perfection of the Spirit.

    I am amazed that there are some who are extremely doubtful whether the holy Virgin should be called Mother of God or no. For if our Lord Jesus Christ is God, then surely the holy Virgin who gave him birth must be God's mother.

    Annunciation of the Theotokos

    Six months after John the Forerunner's conception, the Archangel Gabriel was sent by God to Nazareth, a town of Galilee, unto Mary the Virgin, who had come forth from the Temple a mature maiden (see Nov. 21). According to the tradition handed down by the Fathers, she had been betrothed to Joseph four months. On coming to Joseph's house, the Archangel declared: "Rejoice, thou Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." After some consideration, and turmoil of soul, and fear because of this greeting, the Virgin, when she had finally obtained full assurance concerning God's unsearchable condescension and the ineffable dispensation that was to take place through her, and believing that all things are possible to the Most High, answered in humility: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." And at this, the Holy Spirit came upon her, and the power of the Most High overshadowed her all-blameless womb, and the Son and Word of God, Who existed before the ages, was conceived past speech and understanding, and became flesh in her immaculate body (Luke 1:26-38).

    Bearing in her womb the Uncontainable One, the blessed Virgin went with haste from Nazareth to the hill country of Judea, where Zacharias had his dwelling; for she desired to find Elizabeth her kinswoman and rejoice together with her, because, as she had learned from the Archangel, Elizabeth had conceived in her old age. Furthermore, she wished to tell her of the great things that the Mighty One had been well-pleased to bring to pass in her, and she greeted Elizabeth and drew nigh to her. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, she felt her six-month-old babe, Saint John the Baptist, prophesied of the dawning of the spiritual Sun. Immediately, the aged Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and recognized her as the Mother of her Lord, and with a great voice blessed her and the Fruit that she held within herself. The Virgin also, moved by a supernatural rejoicing in the spirit, glorified her God and Savior, saying: "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour," and the rest, as the divine Luke hath recorded (1:39-55)

    This martyr was the servant of a certain Jewish woman named Pantilla, the wife of the Governor of Thessalonica. When Matrona refused to follow her mistress into the synagogue Pantilla beat her so severly that she died in a few days, and thus received the crown of her confession.

    Saint Hilarion took up the monastic life from his youth and lived in seclusion. Later, as Abbot of the Monastery of Pelecete in Asia Minor (believed to be in Bithynia, not far from Triglia), he suffered much from the Iconoclasts, and reposed in the year 754.

    John Climacus the Righteous, author of The Divine Ladder of Ascent

    This Saint gave himself over to the ascetical life from his early youth. Experienced both in the solitary life of the hermit and in the communal life of cenobitic monasticism, he was appointed Abbot of the Monastery at Mount Sinai and wrote a book containing thirty homilies on virtue. Each homily deals with one virtue, and progressing from those that deal with holy and righteous activity (praxis) unto those that deal with divine vision (theoria), they raise a man up as though by means of steps unto the height of Heaven. For this cause his work is called "The Ladder of Divine Ascent." The day he was made Abbot of Sinai, the Prophet Moses was seen giving commands to those who served at table. Saint John reposed in 603, at eighty years of age. See also the Fourth Sunday of the Fast.

    Lazarus and his sisters Martha and Mary, the friends of the Lord Jesus, had given Him hospitality and served Him many times (Luke 10:38-4z; John 12:2-3). They were from Bethany, a village of Judea. This village is situated in the eastern parts by the foothills of the Mount of Olives, about two Roman miles from Jerusalem. When Lazarus - whose name is a Hellenized form of "Eleazar," which means "God has helped," became ill some days before the saving Passion, his sisters had this report taken to our Saviour, Who was then in Galilee. Nonetheless, He tarried yet two more days until Lazarus died; then He said to His disciples, "Let us go into Judea that I might awake My friend who sleepeth." By this, of course, He meant the deep sleep of death. On arriving at Bethany, He consoled the sisters of Lazarus, who was already four days dead. Jesus groaned in spirit and was troubled at the death of His beloved friend. He asked, "Where have ye laid his body?" and He wept over him. When He drew nigh to the tomb, He commanded that they remove the stone, and He lifted up His eyes, and giving thanks to God the Father, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth." And he that had been dead four days came forth immediately, bound hand and foot with the grave clothes, and Jesus said to those standing there, "Loose him, and let him go." This is the supernatural wonder wrought by the Saviour that we celebrate on this day.

    According to an ancient tradition, it is said that Lazarus was thirty years old when the Lord raised him; then he lived another thirty years on Cyprus and there reposed in the Lord. It is furthermore related that after he was raised from the dead, he never laughed till the end of his life, but that once only, when he saw someone stealing a clay vessel, he smiled and said, "Clay stealing clay." His grave is situated in the city of Kition, having the inscription: "Lazarus the four days dead and friend of Christ." In 890 his sacred relics were transferred to Constantinople by Emperor Leo the Wise, at which time undoubtedly the Emperor composed his stichera for Vespers, "Wishing to behold the tomb of Lazarus . . ."

    Parish News & Events

    Sacrament of Confession is currently being offered by Fr. Nick and Fr. Alex during regular business hours until Friday, March 30.  There are only a few evening appointments available, beginning at 6:00 pm, with the final appointment at 8:00 pm.  During Holy Week, visits are planned for those who are unable to come to church.  Please be considerate of these individuals who otherwise would not receive the blessings of the Church.  Please make your appointments as soon as possible, through the secretary during regular office hours.  Thank you very much for your cooperation.  - Fr.     Rides to Church:  If you, or anyone you know, needs a ride to church, please call the office. We will either send a fellow parishioner to pick you up, or call a cab for you. Also, St. Nicholas is compiling a list of individuals who would be interested in picking up fellow parishioners who do not have a ride to church.  If you are interested in helping us in this very important ministry, please call the office.  It is our hope that everyone who wants to come to St. Nicholas will be able, whether they can drive or not.

    Benevolence:  Hunger is all around us, even here in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County. Many times, we are asked to distribute food and toiletries to families who are hungry and in need. Please consider bringing non perishable food items and toiletries and leaving them on the shelf in the exo-narthex.  Thank you and God Bless You.

    Project Mexico Update: .Thank you to everyone who donated funds to help put our faith in action.  We have raised $4,000 of the $7600 needed to cover the cost of building supplies.  Our hope is to raise further funds to cover the travel expenses of the team.  If you have not yet donated, checks may be made payable to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church with Project Mexico in the memo line.  Questions about Project Mexico?     Stewardship:   "WANTED". We are looking for 98 parishioners /  families who filled out pledge cards in 2017 but who we have not heard from in 2018.  Please contact the Stewardship Committee at our table in the church hall and fill out a Membership Card.  It is important so we can insure you and your family receive all the benefits of our Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and our Ministries.  Without a current membership card we can not insure we have the correct information on file for you and your family.  Remember we will have our first Parish General Assembly on April 22 after church.  Only members in good standing will be able to attend and vote.  We need everyone at the General Assembly to insure our community runs effectively and to make the necessary decisions that insure we put our faith in action.  So please fill out your Membership Card and return it to the Church.

    Philoptochos Palm Sunday Luncheon:  Today is the last day to purchase tickets for next week's annual Palm Sunday Luncheon sponsored by our Philoptochos.  Baked Fish Lunch for adults and Macaroni and Cheese with Fish Sticks for children.  The tickets are $20/adults and $10/children under 10 and are on sale during today’s coffee hour.  Or, please contact Tasia Goffas for tickets at (734) 678-7303.  Tickets will not be available at the door so purchase your tickets today and make plans to attend.  Let us begin Holy Week as a St. Nicholas family by joining together for the luncheon.

    Spring Flower Sale!  Spring is almost here, and the Philoptochos flower sale has started!  Beautiful baskets and planters are available. The orders are due by April 29 with delivery on May 5 during our Women’s Expo—just in time for Mother's Day!  Order forms are on the information racks in the hallway.  Please contact Carolyn Roopas with questions at ccroopas@gmail.com or (734) 395-8216.

    Book Sale: We would like to thank everyone for the donation of books.  We will display all of the books on Sunday, April. 22, following the Liturgy and will be available for purchase on this day.  If we have enough children's books, each child will be able to select 1 book at no charge.  Leftover books will be donated to AAUW.  The money raised will go to our Philoptochos Chapter Challenge for Autism.  We will collect books until the end of March. Thank you again for supporting this project.

    GOYA will be coordinating the memorial luminaries that are displayed during Good Friday’s service and procession.  Luminary sales have begun.  Each candle bag will cost $7 and will display up to two loved ones’ names.  All the proceeds will benefit GOYA youth programs.

    GREEK FESTIVAL SPONSORSHIPS: It’s time to start thinking warm weather and this year’s Ya’ssoo Festival—June 8, 9, 10.  This is an ideal way to promote your business to Ann Arbor and the surrounding communities as well as for individuals to support our festival.  Forms are available on the Ya’ssoo table in the office hallway.  Thank you!

    AHEPA District #10:  Once again, the Order of AHEPA District #10 Educational Foundation is awarding educational scholarships to high school students and college students.  Scholarship applications can be downloaded at www.AHEPAdistrict10.org/educational-foundation.  The deadline is 5:00 pm, April 1. 

    iSacrifice Holy Week Retreat: Mark your calendars! The retreat will take place this Saturday, March 31 - Saturday of Lazarus, following the Divine Liturgy and brunch. The theme this year is iSacrifice and will cover the washing of the feet, the passion, and the resurrection of Christ. Adult discussion and palm cross making with Fr. Vasili will take place during the retreat. We look forward to seeing you!

    Flowers:  Thank you to Gigi Kitromelides for donating the funds to decorate the Icon of the Theotokos for the Akathist Hymn and to Angeliki Evangelinos for the icon of the Annunciation. If you are interested in purchasing flowers for any upcoming feastday, please contact Lambrini Lagos or the Church office.

    Tsoureki Sale:  The Daughters of Penelope Annual Tsoureki Sale ends today, Sunday, March 25. The cost is $10 for each 1 lb. loaf without the dyed egg.  The pickup date is Palm Sunday, April 1 after the Divine Liturgy.     Easter Egg Hunt:  The Penelope's Kids ministry of the Daughters of Penelope is sponsoring an Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday following the Agape service on Sunday, April 8. It promises to be a lot of fun!  Everyone is invited to participate.

    Guidelines for receiving Holy Communion

    GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION

    For Orthodox Christians:

    When preparing to receive Holy Communion, please remain quietly in your pews until an Usher directs you to approach from the center aisle.  Your prayerful attention helps sustain the solemnity of the Divine Liturgy for those praying the “Prayers of Preparation” and following Holy Communion the “Prayers of Thanksgiving.”  

    For Non-Orthodox Christians:

    We welcome to our worship those Christians not fully united with us (canonically).  It is a consequence of the sad divisions of Christianity that we cannot extend a general invitation to receive Holy Communion.  Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the celebrating community signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship.  Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray.

Please note, Holy Communion is reserved for prepared Orthodox Christians. Visitors are welcome to receive the Antidoro (Blessed Bread), which is distributed at the end of the Divine Liturgy.
