Fr. John's Message

But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? Man does not know the way to it, and it is not found deep in the land of the living. The deep says “It is not in me,” and the sea says, “It is not with me.” It cannot be gotten for gold, and silver cannot be weighed as its price. It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in the precious onyx or sapphire. Gold and glass cannot equal it, nor can it be exchanged for jewels or fine gold. No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; the price of wisdom is above pearls. The topaz of Ethiopia cannot compare with it, nor can it be valued in pure gold.

Good morning Prayer Team!

Just about everything in life that is worthwhile comes at a cost. We have to spend time and money to get some benefit. Sometimes that time is significant, like years of education to land a good job. Or a sizeable mortgage to have a nice home. There are obvious benefits to having a good job and a good home. There are costs to having a job but definite benefits in the form of compensation, which allows us to go on trips, acquire material goods and many other things.  

There is even a high cost to being a Christian. Because to be a good Christian, one must “deny himself and take up his cross and follow.” (Mark 8:34) Of course, there is an eternal benefit for one who is a follower of Christ, which is eternal life. And there are plenty of benefits in everyday life as well.

Encouragement is one of the few things in life that comes with a low cost and high benefit. As we will discuss, it doesn’t cost much time to encourage someone. It doesn’t cost any money. A smile or a compliment or an encouraging word takes mere seconds.  

There is benefit to both encourager and the one who is receiving encouragement. To the one receiving encouragement, their confidence receives a boost, which in turn makes them more joyful and hopeful. The one giving the encouragement also benefits, to see someone else feel good and know that you are the cause of their good feelings. I must say, I love seeing people who feel good, especially the ones where I play a direct role in encouraging. There is virtually no cost and just high benefit that comes from encouraging someone. 

Let’s talk about the cost of feeling discouraged. Because discouragement comes with little to no benefit and high cost. A “benefit” from being discouraged might be more motivation. However, most people just get down when they are discouraged. They feel anything but motivated and empowered. Discouragement leads to doubt and doubt stifles confidence, causes depression, fuels frustration and reduces efficiency. I know that when I feel discouraged, it is harder to get out of bed, stay focused on tasks and feel confident in what I’m doing. Encouragement puts a “spring in my step,” motivates me to jump out of bed rather than slink out of it, gets me to work in a good mood instead of a bad one, helps me be more patient and overall makes the day more productive and efficient.  

The bottom line is, it costs very little to encourage. It brings a benefit to both the one being encouraged and the one who encourages them. And there is a high cost when one does not receive encouragement, i.e. when one feels discouraged. Can we afford NOT to build environments of encouragement? Can we afford to have people more frustrated, less focused, more inefficient and less confident than they already are? N.O.

It takes money to overcome financial deficits. It takes time to overcome deficits of knowledge. But it requires only desire to overcome the encouragement deficits in our world. I can’t fix my own deficit of encouragement, but others most certainly can. Encouragement is really a work of the heart, not of the mind. That’s why this study is called “The Heart of Encouragement.” Because it is not intelligence, fame or fortune that makes one a good encourager. Those with the biggest hearts become the biggest encouragers. If there is anything tangible we can all work on it is our own hearts. Focus on a soft heart and you are a few steps closer to being a good encourager.  

Today’s Scripture quote from the book of Job talks about the value of wisdom, how you can’t put a price on it. Encouragement is the same thing. What good is all the fortune and material possessions in the world when one feels discouraged?  

Encouragement is one of the few things in life that has low cost and high benefit. It’s also a vital need, something we can’t put a price on. Since there is such a large need for encouragement, and it is so easy for us to encourage others, there really isn’t much excuse for why there isn’t more encouragement going on in our world today. We’ve all got a role to play in being encouragers. Let’s get to work.  

Lord, help me to honor You this day by bringing something that is so desperately needed, encouragement, to as many people as possible. Give me the eyes to see those who need the most encouragement. Give me the words to encourage them. And give me the heart that rejoices in encouraging others and grows in the desire to do so. Amen. 

Because there is no cost and high benefit to sending a message of encouragement, send at least three today!

Prayer for a Sick Person:

Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal (me) Your servant from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ. Grant (me) patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health.  Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed.  I pray that You heal (me) as Your servant and grant (me) the gift of complete health. For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

The Reading is from Mark 16:9-20

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.

After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.

Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.

You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 1:21-24; 2:1-4.

Brethren, it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

But I call God to witness against me - it was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. For I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.

The Reading is from Luke 5:1-11

At that time, as Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

Phocas the Martyr, Bishop of Sinope

This saint was known for the many miracles he worked and for his apostolic zeal in shepherding the flock of Sinope. He contested for the Faith during the reign of the Emperor Trajan, in the year 102, when he was burned to death in a bath-house. A homily in his honour was composed by Saint John Chrysostom. The translation of his holy relics is celebrated on July 23.

The Conception of St. John the Baptist

This came to pass fifteen months before the birth of Christ, after the vision of the Angel that Zacharias, the father of the Forerunner, saw in the Temple while he executed the priest's office in the order of his course during the feast of the Tabernacles, as tradition bears witness. In this vision, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Zacharias and said to him, "Thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John" (Luke 1:13). Knowing that Elizabeth was barren, and that both he and she were elderly, Zacharias did not believe what the Angel told him, although he had before him the example of Abraham and Sarah, of Hannah, mother of the Prophet Samuel, and of other barren women in Israel who gave birth by the power of God. Hence, he was condemned by the Archangel to remain speechless until the fulfilment of these words in their season, which also came to pass (Luke 1:7-24).

The Falling Asleep of St. John the Evangelist and Theologian

This Apostle was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the brother of James the elder. First a fisherman by trade, he became an Apostle and the beloved Disciple of Christ. Only he of all the Disciples followed Him even to the Cross, and was entrusted with the care of our Saviour's Mother, as it were another son to her, and a brother of Christ the Teacher. After this, he preached throughout Asia Minor, especially in Ephesus. When the second persecution against the Christians began in the year 96 during the reign of Domitian, he was taken in bonds to Rome, and there was cast into a vat filled to the brim with boiling oil. Coming forth therefrom unharmed, he was exiled to the island of Patmos, where he wrote the Book of Revelation. Returning again to Ephesus after the death of the tyrant, he wrote his Gospel (after the other Evangelists had already written theirs) and his three Catholic Epistles. In all, he lived ninety-five years and fell asleep in the Lord during the reign of Trajan in the year 100. He was called Theologian because he loftily expounded in his Gospel the theology of the inexpressible and eternal birth of the Son and Word of God the Father. It is for this cause that an eagle-a symbol of the Holy Spirit, as Saint Irenaeus says-is depicted in his icon, for this was one of the four symbolic living creatures that the Prophet Ezekiel saw (Ezek. 1:10).

Let us worship the Word, O ye faithful, praising Him that with the Father and the Spirit is co-beginningless God, Who was born of a pure Virgin that we all be saved; for He was pleased to mount the Cross in the flesh that He assumed, accepting thus to endure death. And by His glorious rising, He also willed to resurrect the dead.
