Lazarus the Wonderworker

Our righteous Father Lazarus was born in 967 in Magnesia of Asia Minor, and passed through various regions of the East, visiting monasteries. He was tonsured a monk, and then ordained priest, at the Monastery of Mar Sabbas in Palestine. In 1005 he returned to his homeland, and beginning in the year 1012, he built the monasteries that are on Mount Galesion. He raised up a pillar, on which he lived as a stylite for many years, enduring unspeakable hardships for the love of Christ, and reposed in the Lord in deep old age in the year 1053, during the reign of Constantine Monomachus (1042-1055).

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19.

Brethren, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother.

At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

REVERSE RAFFLE SUNDAY!:  It’s not too late to buy your lucky raffle ticket and support our parish ministries!  Sts. Constantine and Helen’s biggest annual fundraiser, “Putting on the Glitz” is a virtual event again this year. Stay at home and watch the live drawing, held via our parish website TODAY, Sunday, November 7th at 6:00 pm.  Each raffle ticket is $125, with the top prize of $4,000!  Every 10th number drawn receives gift cards and/or cash prizes! Tickets are still available on our parish website at:  www.stcons.org or at the coffee hour today.

HONORING OUR VETS: Today we honor our brave Veterans! There will be a memorial service at the end of today’s Divine Liturgy for our deceased veterans.  Our HOPE and JOY children will be “selling” small American flags in the Narthex before and after the service, collecting donations to buy gift cards to be distributed to homeless and needy Vets through the VA Medical Center.  Our first HOPE and JOY event of the year will be held immediately following church TODAY. There will be an All-American lunch for our children, ages 4 – 12, and their families, some fun activities, and the children will put together special gifts to be distributed to Vets through the VA Medical Center.

NOVEMBER TLC LUNCHEON: Our November TLC (TUESDAY Lunch Club) will be held THIS WEEK on Tuesday, November 9th at 12:00 noon. All ages welcome to join us for some delicious food, good conversation and a surprise or two. Please RSVP to Caryl or David no later than November 7th at 734.751.3683. 

FALL GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING: The Fall General Assembly meeting of our parish will take place next Sunday, November 14th immediately following church. Parish Council elections will be on the agenda. Nomination forms are available on the Pangari. A light lunch will be served to those in attendance.

MOMS GROUP “EVENING OF GRATITUDE”: Our Moms will get together on Sunday, November 14th from 4:30 – 6:30 in the Hellenic Cultural Center to celebrate friends old and new! We hope you’ll join us to make and take freezable hors d’oeuvres for holiday gatherings, leave with easy and fun recipes for the season, enjoy finger foods, fellowship and fun.  Please RSVP, stcons2@gmail.com or 734.525.6789.

HOLY UNCTION SERVICE: Our sister churches Holy Cross and Nativity have joined with Sts. Constantine and Helen to offer Holy Unction services on a rotating schedule once a month. Adults and children will be anointed with Holy oil for physical health, well-being and forgiveness. The next scheduled Holy Unction service will be held at St Cons on Wednesday, November 17th at 6:30 pm.

PHILOPTOCHOS SUNDAY AND PHILOPTOCHOS CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON:  Next week, November 14th is Philoptochos Sunday, celebrating 90 years of Philoptochos.  There will be an artoclasia and memorial. All Philoptochos members please attend!  Andmake your reservations now for the Philoptochos Christmas luncheon, to be held on Saturday, December 4th at the Marriott Laurel Park. Tickets are $28, and are available from Donna Linaras or Carol Bozadzis.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY: Our Adult Bible Study will meet on Tuesday November 9, at 7:00 pm on the ZOOM platform. Reading and discussion of the Gospel of Matthew.  ZOOM LINK is: https://zoom.us/j/7345256789, Meeting ID: 734 525 6789  All adults are welcome to join, no pre-registration needed.

NEWS AND NOTICES

FALL FESTIVAL THANKS!  Many thanks to all of our volunteers for this year’s Fall Festival! The kids (of all ages!) had a fantastic time because of your efforts. Special thanks to the event coordinators, Maria Haviland, Tracy Monolidis, and Anastasia Sakakini. Your hard work is appreciated!

CHOIR POINSETTIA SALE: You can support our Choir by purchasing a beautiful poinsettia plant! Choir members are selling red, white, and tri-color plants for $25 each. Deadline to order is November 17th, delivery date is December 6th. Please consider buying a plant for your home or paying for a poinsettia to decorate the church Altar.

CHILDREN’S PHOTOS:  Please remember to bring in photos of your children to be included on our Sunday School Christmas tree in the church Narthex.  There are baskets at the Pangari and outside the church office to leave photos.

PARISH CHRISTMAS CARD:  Once again this year, there is no charge to be included in our annual parish Christmas card, however, only families who have completed a 2021 pledge card this year will be included in the Christmas card. If you have not done so, it is not too late to complete a 2021 pledge card and make your offering today. If you aren’t sure, feel free to call the church office and check to see if you are a member in good standing for the year 2021. Pledge cards are available on the parish website (stcons.org/stewardship), at the Pangari, or in the church office.  

Non-Orthodox Visitors Please Note:  Holy Communion is offered to Orthodox Christians who have properly prepared themselves.  Visitors are welcome to receive the Antidoron (Blessed Bread), which is distributed at the end of the Divine Liturgy.
