Prayer

When the blind man heard Thee, O Lord, passing by on the way, he cried: Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!  And Thou didst call him and open his eyes.  Likewise enlighten the spiritual eyes of my heart with Thy love as I cry to Thee and say:
Jesus, Creator of those on high!
Jesus, Redeemer of those below!
Jesus , Vanquisher of the power of Hades!
Jesus, Adorner of every creature!
Jesus, Comforter of my soul!
Jesus, Enlightener of my mind!
Jesus, Glandness of my heart!
Jesus, Health of my body!
Jesus, my Saviour, save me!
Jesus, my Light, enlighten me!
Jesus, deliver me from all torments!
Jesus, save me despite mine unworthiness!
Jesus, Son of God have mercy on me!

From our Pastoral Assistant Stavros

Excerpt from Chapter “At Panagouda Giving to the Suffering” from the book “Elder Paisios of Mount Athos” by Hieromonk Isaac. Since the first publishing of this book, we have had the glorification of Elder Paisios as a Saint of the Orthodox Church, so we may find newer editions titled “Saint Paisios of Mount Athos.”

“Eventually the number of visitors increased beyond his capacities: he was exceeding the bounds of his endurance. “I’m not my own master,” he confessed, “I’m on the people’s schedule. Before, my 'nous' was immersed in the Jesus prayer. Now, I live the people’s problems. A lot of times, I’m jolted awake [by their problems]!”
On the other hand, he knew that at least the majority of the pilgrims were in great need. “Don’t think that people come here to pass the time of day. They’ve got serious problems. The thing that makes me keep going like this is that some souls are helped. I mean, I started out as a monk to lead a hidden life, but I can’t because of the people. One elder told me, “Your rule, Elder Paisios, is to receive people and comfort them.’ Now, how God’s going to judge things, I don’t know.”
Naturally, for his part, the Elder longed to be alone amidst quiet, in prayer. He felt that in prayer, he contributed more, and in a more substantial way, to his brothers. Because of that, when he saw that the number of visitors was constantly growing, he had to take certain measures. ..
.. “But then there was a sudden and obvious change in his attitude. He stopped his beloved excursions into the forest completely, and he curtailed the amount of time he spent locked in his cell. When he was asked why, he answered enigmatically with the words of Isaiah the Prophet: “Comfort, ye, comfort ye my people, saith God” - leaving it to be understood that he had received this as a divine commandment. There is also an account that the Mother of God appeared to him and said, “My job is to protect your border [here on Athos], and I do it. So you, [for your part,] are to receive people without exception, because they are in need.” The Elder humbly obeyed the Theotokos, and at her command accepted the work of ministering to the suffering.
Even though he received everyone who came, the people didn’t change him- they didn’t make him worldly. Quite the opposite: by the grace of God, the Elder transformed the people, since he sacrificed by giving to them. And he himself flourished, ascended spiritually “from the strength of action to the strength of divine vision,” and had tremendous supranatural experiences. Drawing on his hesychastic experience, he used the night for prayer, along with as many hours as he could manage to spend alone during the day. When he was alone, he could bring people’s requests before God in prayer; when he was with people, he would preach Christ. God and suffering people became the two axes around which his whole life revolved.”

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Tone. Daniel 3.26,27.
Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers.
Verse: For you are just in all you have done.

The reading is from Acts of the Apostles 20:16-18, 28-36.

IN THOSE DAYS, Paul had decided to sail past Ephesos, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost. And from Miletos he sent to Ephesos and called to him the elders of the church. And when they came to him, he said to them: "Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me. In all things I have shown you that by so toiling one must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, 'it is more blessed to give than to receive.' " And when he had spoken thus, he knelt down and prayed with them all.

Fourth Tone.

Gospel Reading

Fathers of the 1st Council
The Reading is from John 17:1-13

At that time, Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work which you gave me to do; and now, Father, you glorify me in your own presence with the glory which I had with you before the world was made.

"I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world; yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you; for I have given them the words which you gave me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you did send me. I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are mine; all mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves."

Fathers of the 1st Council

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Tone

When the angelic powers appeared before Your grave, the soldiers guarding it took on the look of death, and standing at Your sepulcher was Mary, there seeking Your pure and spotless Body. Despoiling Hades' armor, You were not stained by his touch. You came forth to meet the Virgin, bestowing eternal life. And You are risen from the dead; glory to you, O Lord!

Apolytikion for Holy Ascension in the Fourth Tone

Thou hast ascended in glory, O Christ our God, and gladdened Thy disciples with the promise of the Holy Spirit; and they were assured by the blessing that Thou art the Son of God and Redeemer of the world.

Apolytikion for Fathers of the 1st Council in the Plagal Fourth Tone

Supremely blessed are You, O Christ our God. You established the holy Fathers upon the earth as beacons, and through them You have guided us all to the true Faith, O greatly merciful One, glory be to You.

Apolytikion for the Church in the First Tone

As a liberator of prisoners, and as a guardian of the poor, a doctor of the sick, a defender of kings. Trophy bearer, O Great Martyr George. Intercede to Christ our God, and save our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal Second Tone

When You had fulfilled the dispensation for our sake, * and united things on earth with the things in heaven, * You were taken up thither in glory, O Christ our God, * going not away from any place, * but continuing inseparable, * and to them that love You crying out: * "I am with you, and there is, therefore, none against you."
