Summer 2021 Stewardship News
(Please read last month's news on our website)

Thank you very much for being faithful stewards of St. George Greek Orthodox Church.  As we reach the summer months, stewardship historically trends lower due to vacations and the hot weather.  We pray you will continue to support the church over the summer months using our PayPal online platform if you are traveling or at home.

We are hoping to see a return to our onsite Church School program and Youth Group/GOYA activities beginning end of summer.  In the meantime we encourage you to register your children to attend summer camp either at St. Nicholas Ranch in Dunlap, CA (virtual camp July 19-30) https://gosfyouth.org/summer-camp#/virtual-camp-2021

or Camp St. Nicholas in Frazier Park, CA (age 13 or entering 8th grade and up on site camp July 18-23 or July 25-30)

Prayer

As I rise from sleep, I thank Thee, O Holy Trinity, for through Thy great goodness and patience Thou wast not angry with me, an idler and sinner, nor hast Thou destroyed me with mine iniquities, but hast shown Thy usual love for mankind; and when I was prostrate in despair, Thou hast raised me up to keep the morning watch and glorify Thy power.  And now enlighten my mind's eye, and open my mouth that I may deditate on Thy words, and understand Thy commandments, and do Thy will, and hymn Thee in heartfelt confession, and sing praises to Thine all-holy name: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Sprit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

From our Pastoral Assistant Stavros

Excerpt from Chapter “At Panagouda Giving to the Suffering” from the book “Elder Paisios of Mount Athos” by Hieromonk Isaac. Since the first publishing of this book, we have had the glorification of Elder Paisios as a Saint of the Orthodox Church, so we may find newer editions titled “Saint Paisios of Mount Athos.”

“Our times are difficult,” he (Saint Paisios) would say, “and we’ll have to go through hardships and maybe even suffer martyrdom during the storm [of persecutions] that’s going to pour down on us. The only way to get through it will be to live a spiritual life. These hard times are a blessing, because they force us to live closer to Christ. It’s an opportunity for more struggles. The war now won’t be fought with weapons: it’ll be a spiritual war against the Antichrist. He’ll try to lead astray ‘If it were possible the very elect.’ Everything will be controlled by the beast, from Brussels. After the identification cards, they’ll move on in a cunning way to the mark of the beast- they’ll force people to be marked on the hand or the forehead. Only people who have the mark will be able to buy and sell and be taken care of. The faithful, who’ll refuse, will be punished. So they should start getting used to living simply, and if they can they should have a field, a few olive trees, or an animal for their families’ needs. The toughest part will last three-and-a-half years. God won’t leave people without help.”

He disapproved of the rationale of people who said, for example, “So what if I receive the mark? I’ll make the sign of the Cross on my head,” or, “I’ll get an identity card and scratch a cross on top of it,” or “I won’t deny Christ on the inside.” He would say, “If today’s Christians, with this kind of thinking, had lived during the persecutions, we wouldn’t have any martyrs. The first Christians didn’t rationalize their situation: they confessed Christ firmly, and they were on fire for martyrdom. The pagans offered them prominent positions, and they tried to persuade them [to avoid martyrdom] by saying, ‘Just say that you’re not a Christian, then believe in your God privately; offer a little incense, pretend like you’re sacrificing, but later on don’t; pretend like you eat food offered to the gods, then just eat clean meat; don’t preach here, just go somewhere else.’ But there was no way they would deny Christ. They ran toward martyrdom for Christ with joy. They were aflame with divine love.””

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Fourth Tone. Psalm 18.4,1.
Their voice has gone out into all the earth.
Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God.

The reading is from Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11.

WHEN THE DAY of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontos and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God."

Plagal Fourth Tone.

Gospel Reading

Holy Pentecost
The Reading is from John 7:37-52; 8:12

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, "If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" So there was a division among the people over him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" The Pharisees answered them, "Are you led astray, you also? Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed." Nikodemos, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?" They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee." Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Holy Pentecost

Hymns of the Day

Apolytikion for Pentecost in the Plagal Fourth Tone

Blessed are You, O Christ our God, Who hast shown forth the fishermen as supremely wise by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit, and through them didst draw the world into Your net. O Lover of mankind, glory be to Thee.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal Fourth Tone

Once, when He descended and confounded the tongues, the Most High divided the nations; and when He divided the tongues of fire, He called all men into unity; and with one accord we glorify the All-holy Spirit.
