The mission of our beloved parish of St. George is to put into practice our Orthodox faith for our spiritual growth while creating fellowship and ministries for all the faithful. It should be our mission to spread the word of the Gospel and build harmony and love within the community and be the example of our Orthodox faith for our youth.

We are grateful that you have joined us for prayer and worship. We welcome Fr. Peter and Presvytera Gigi Souritzidis back to our St. George community where he had previously served for 8 years (2009-2017). Even though they were never very far from us, we warmly embrace them on their return as Fr. Peter continues his ministry at St. George. Please join us after the Divine Services in our Fr. John & Presvytera Margaret Orfanakos Fellowship Hall for our Hospitality Hour.

Communion Guidelines:

Baptized and Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have properly prepared, according to the Holy Orthodox Church guidelines, may receive Holy Communion. Please allow families with young children to receive Holy Communion first and wait for the ushers to dismiss your row.

Sunday Memorials, Artoclasias and Other Blessings:

Please inform the church office well in advance of Sunday mornings for all memorials, artoclasias, 40-day blessings and other blessings so as not to disrupt the Divine Liturgy. If any requests or lists of names are received after the Great Entrance they will have to wait until the following Sunday.

****Additionally, in order to preserve the sanctity of the Divine Liturgy, please wait to light candles in the St. Nectarios Chapel at the correct time. If one arrives after the Great Entrance, they will have to wait until the end of Liturgy, while the Andithoron is being given out, to light candles in the Chapel.

St. George Greek School:

Classes will begin on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 starting with an Agiasmo blessing that day. We are all looking forward to welcoming all of our returning and new students! As a friendly reminder, there will be a $50 discount per family to all registration forms returned by 8/12/2022! Drop them off at the church office or mail in your registration forms with payments.

GOYA 2022:

GOYA (Greek Orthodox Youth Association), is the ministry to Orthodox Christian teenagers ages 12-18 who are in 7th through 12th grade.The GOYA program includes athletics, retreats, outreach, cultural and social activities designed to allow youths to learn and grow as Orthodox Christians. Athletics (volleyball for girls and basketball for boys) will begin late August. Eligible youth interested in (or considering) participating in GOYA are welcome to come and play or just find out more about our program. No prior experience is necessary. More information and athletic practice schedule to follow. Our kick-off meeting is scheduled for September 15th. St. George JOY:

JOY (Junior Orthodox Youth), is the ministry to youths in grades three through six. This program allows kids to come together in fellowship each month while engaging in various social, artistic and athletic activities with the goal of strengthening their relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Church School Teachers Needed:

We are grateful to our dedicated staff of volunteers who do an amazing job teaching religious education to our youth. As we plan ahead for September, we invite others to join our team. No teaching experience is needed to help make a difference in the life of a child! All are welcome. Feast Day Flower and Icon Donations:

During the Ecclesiastical year, our Church comes alive with many Liturgical services. It is customary in our faith to decorate icons used during special Feast Day services with flowers. We encourage our parishioners to offer this special donation as a unique and appropriate way to remember departed friends and relatives, as well as an expression of love on behalf of thier family and prayers for their loved ones. Donations are now being accepted for the following Feast Day celebrations:

Hosting of Summer Coffee Hour:

During the months of July and August we can all share the responsibility of bringing food for our coffee hour. Please bring pastries, cookies, fruit, etc. to church with you from time to time to add to our coffee hour table. Or, arrange to host a coffee hour by contacting the church office. If we do not have someone to host or sponsor the coffee hour, we will not be able have one on that particular Sunday. Thanking you in advance for your participation this summer.

Sponsor A Day Program:

As a church community, it is our ambitious goal to meet our operating budget through Stewardship. It is estimated that the operating expenses of our church average to be $1,400 per steward/family. If this average were to be reached, then the Church would be able to pay all its expenses only with Stewardship donations. All other funds collected from candles, trays, raffles, fundraisers, etc. could be used towards capital improvements. One way to bridge the gap is through our “Sponsor a Day” program. We encourage our parishioners to select a day that has special meaning to them like a birthday, feast day, anniversary or a memorial and make a $250 donation. We would like to thank Meletios Lendis for sponsoring July 17^th, the feast day of St. Marina, for the health and protection of his family; the Orthodox Life Institute for sponsoring July 17^th, the feast day of Mother Maria of Paris; Alexandra Kleiner for sponsoring July 20^th, the feast day of Prophet Elias, in memory of her father Achilles Georgeou; and the St. Paraskevi Philoptochos Society for sponsoring July 26^th, the feast day of their patron Saint, St. Paraskevi. Beefsteak & 50/50 Grand Raffle:

Please support our efforts and join us at our Beefsteak Fundraiser on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 6:30PM, where the Grand 50/50 drawing will take place at 9:00PM. Tickets are $20 each and are available at the church office, during coffee hour or please speak to a Parish Council member if you would like to purchase tickets. REMEMBER, the more tickets that are sold, the bigger the cash prizes!!! Winner need not be present.

St. Paraskevi Philoptochos News:

Once again, we will be collecting school supplies to support The Dawn Treader Christian School, a school for underprivileged children, in Paterson, NJ. Please look for our flyer in the online bulletin and purchase any of the supplies listed or you can make a monetary donation. For further information contact Phyllis at pmagiros@verizon.net or 201-602-0632. Donations can be placed in the two marked boxes in the church atrium. Monetary donations can be sent to the Church office, make checks payable to St. Paraskevi Philoptochos or give to a Philoptochos Board Member. Our Church, Our Spiritual Home:

In our spiritual home, we grow together as we share our spiritual life. We give sacrificially to support our local parish because when we give of our first fruits, we set our priorities on God and have a constant reminder that all we are and all we have are His. We are stewards of the Gospel and the stewards of our parish. We see our church, not as it is, but as it could be. We offer our treasure and ourselves sacrificially, so that, as members of the Body of Christ, we may reach our full potential in Him.

Matthias, Apostle of the 70

After Judas by transgression fell from his apostleship (Acts 1: 25), and hanging himself out of despair ended his life with a wretched and shameful death (Matt. 27: 5), then, that the number of the Twelve not be lacking, all the disciples gathered in one place after the Ascension of the Savior (the number of men and women being 120), and they chose two men from among them, Joseph, called Barsabas, who was also surnamed Justus, and Matthias, and they set them in the midst. Then they prayed to God and cast lots, "and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven Apostles" (Acts 1: 15-26). And thus, having taken the place of Judas, Matthias fulfilled the work of apostleship and the prophecy concerning Judas, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David: "And his bishopric let another take" (Ps. 108(109):8). After this, it is said, Matthias preached the Gospel in Ethiopia, and completed his life there in martyrdom.

Laurence the Holy Martyr & Archdeacon of Rome

This Saint, who was born in Spain, was the Archdeacon of the Church of Rome, caring for the sacred vessels of the Church and distributing money to the needy. About the year 257, a harsh persecution was raised up against the Christians by Valerian. Pope Sixtus, who was from Athens, was commanded to worship the idols, and refused; before his martyrdom by beheading, he committed to Laurence all the sacred vessels of the Church. When Laurence was arrested and brought before the Prefect, he was questioned concerning the treasures of the Church; he asked for three days' time to prepare them. He then proceeded to gather all the poor and needy, and presented them to the Prefect and said, "Behold the treasures of the Church." The Prefect became enraged at this and gave command that Laurence be racked, then scourged with scorpions (a whip furnished with sharp iron points - compare II Chron. 10:11), then stretched out on a red-hot iron grill. But the courageous athlete of Christ endured without groaning. After he had been burned on one side, he said, "My body is done on one side; turn me over on the other." And when this had taken place, the Martyr said to the tyrants, "My flesh is now well done, you may taste of it." And when he had said this, and had prayed for his slayers in imitation of Christ, he gave up his spirit on August 10, 258.

What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name.
