Dean's Message

Father Athanasios C HarosThere is no Salvation without Forgiveness

Let’s face it. We all have done or said something for which we need to be forgiven. What we do might be unique to our situation, but the truth that we all do and say things that we should not have said, or done, cannot be denied. Hopefully, our family and friends forgive our momentary lapses in judgement, and our relationships move forward. But what if we aren’t forgiven? What if our family and friends refuse to forgive us? Would we feel an injustice has been done? Afterall, our mistake wasn’t intentional; it was a momentary lapse in judgement. If we had thought ahead of time, we (hopefully) wouldn’t have said or done whatever it was in the first place.

In today’s Gospel lesson we hear about just such a case, of a lack of forgiveness. One man owed a nominal debt to another, and begged the other for a little extra time to repay. No extra time was given, and the first man was thrown into debtors prison. Unfortunately, both men owed a debt, the second one owed a huge debt to the king and would never have been able to have enough time to repay the debt. He also begged for more time. Ultimately, more time was not given by the King: “'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’ And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him.” (Matthew 18.32-34)

Forgiveness can be a sticky subject. We all like being forgiven, but we don’t all like to forgive. We enjoy the benefit of extra chances to get life right, but we rarely offer others the same opportunity. Jesus said, "So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses." (Matthew 18.35) Can you imagine the pain of knowing we could have been forgiven by God if only we had forgiven someone else for that momentary lapse in judgment?

The Gospel story begins, “Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.” (Matthew 18.23) There will come a time without doubt that God will come to settle accounts with each of us. We don’t know when; we don’t know where. What we can be sure of, however, is that He will expect us to have already forgiven other people whatever small (or large) thing they may have said or done. At that moment, it will be too late to change our hearts. Now is the time, because there is no salvation without forgiveness.

Adult Catechism

Father Sampson Kasapakis in action

Dear St. Nicholas Cathedral Family,

We have reached the part in our Divine Liturgy where we begin seeing the past tense being used within the Liturgy. “Having commemorated” “Having accepted” “For the gifts presented and consecrated” and you may begin to ask yourself... “why?” Ultimately, it is to be in communion with God, so that we can become, by His grace, like Him in every possible way. All of this this past tense part of the Liturgy exists so that God may “send down upon us the divine grace and the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

After this Litany we hear the Lord’s Prayer. In Matthew 6:10-15, when Christ teaches us how to pray by introducing the Lord Prayer, I believe He shared it with us because this prayer is inclusive of the many things we will be dealing with as Christians. I know I have said in a sermon before that we can unassumingly say ‘The Creed’ and ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ like robots, but that a big part of why that may happen is because we often are told to memorize it but not told what it all means. What does “Hallowed be thy name” or “Thy Kingdom Come” mean? When we say “Thy will be done on Earth as it is in in Heaven,” are we going to do it? When we say “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us,” does our heart truly share that same forgiveness?

When we say "Our Father,” we say it collectively as one community, one family. As one family, I would like us to reflect together if we are truly prepared for some of the words we say?

The word “Hallowed” is an old English word meaning: “to make holy or sanctify.” Do our lives reflect that same sanctification?  Are we sanctifying God’s Holy name when we say it?

When we then say together “Thy Kingdom come,” these words make me tremble when I think about what that means. Are we ready for the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God? Meaning, are we ready to be brought forth to the judgement seat of Christ? Hopefully we are following the “Thy will be done” part. Hopefully our hearts are ready to offer everyone around us the “forgiveness of trespasses” as we also will hope to receive forgiveness from God because when “Thy Kingdom come” actually happens, we all will need mercy from God.

I hope that when you begin to think a bit more about these words, and their actual meaning, that they become a reality for you. In my journey to a greater understanding of ’The Lord’s Prayer’ and the Liturgy, the words started to become alive. It all became so real, and started to hit me hard at home, because all of this; The Lord’s Prayer, the Grace of the Holy Spirit, receiving Holy Communion - it is real. The question that then started to come to my mind was, “Am I living up to it all?”

My prayer is that these sessions not only help to create a new outlook on ‘The Lord’s Prayer” and the Liturgy, but also that the more we learn about the meaning behind them, and the more we reflect on it, the more it becomes real to us.

With Love in the Lord,

+Fr. Sampson N. Kasapakis

Make an Offering of Oil

Following the ancient tradition of the Temple as commanded by God, Orthodox Christians bring an offering of olive oil to be continually burned in the Church lamps, serving as a reminder of the presence of the Light of God.

"And you shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to cause the lamp to burn continually."  Exodus 27.20

We invite anyone to make an offering of oil to the Church along with the names of loved ones & friends who are alive in the Lord, or alive with us on Earth, so that we may pray for you, your family and friends.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 2nd Mode

When you descended to the realm of death You as life immortal rendered to Hades a mortal blow by Your all radiant divinity. And when You from infernal depths and the darkness below did raise the dead. All the hosts of heaven's powers did proclaim and cry out, O life giving Christ and our God we give glory.

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Transfiguration in the Grave Mode

You were transfigured upon the mountain, O Christ our God, showing to Your disciples Your glory as much as they could bear. Do also in us, sinners though we be, shine Your everlasting light, through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Giver of light. Glory to You.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Grave Mode

You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

11th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 9:2-12

Brethren, you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to our food and drink? Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a sister as wife, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? Do I say this on human authority? Does not the law say the same? For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain." Is it for oxen that God is concerned? Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of a share in the crop. If we have sown spiritual good among you, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? If others share this rightful claim upon you, do not we still more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.

11th Sunday of Matthew

Gospel Reading

11th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 18:23-35

The Lord said this parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, 'Pay what you owe.' So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' And in anger his lord delivered him to the torturers, till he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart."

11th Sunday of Matthew

Saints and Feasts

Palamon___pachomius_the_great
August 12

Palamon, Elder of Saint Pachomius the Great

Saint Palamon, a fourth-century hermit, was the teacher of Saint Pachomius. He is known only through the life of Pachomius. He is important for having transmitted to young Pachomius the ascetic traditions of early Christian monasticism.

When Pachomius decided to become a monk, he went to the anchorite Palamon, who had become a model for many monks near the village of Sheneset (Chenoboskion), and asked him for the grace to become a monk in his company. Palamon explained to Pachomius "the rule of monastic life, according to what we have learned from those who went before us." Pachomius lived for seven years with him, until he settled at Tabennese. Palamon died shortly afterward.

Palamon was a typical charismatic father of the Egyptian desert: A man of frightfully severe asceticism, dedicated to vigils, fasting, and manual work, he was first of all a man of continuous prayer. Although he did not try to set up some form of community, he nevertheless accepted the task of leading in the paths of ascetic life all those who were disposed to take upon themselves the cross of Christ. "Abrupt in speech," he could also love his disciples with great tenderness, and was very sad when Pachomius left him to follow his own calling. Nevertheless, he said, "May the will of God be done."

The Holy Martyrs Photius & Anicetus of Nicomedia

These Martyrs contested in Nicomedia about the year 288. When Diocletian stirred up his persecution of the Christians, Anicetus presented himself openly and said that all who worship idols are blind and senseless. He was beaten with rods so ruthlessly that his bones appeared from the rents and wounds in his flesh. As he was suffering further torments, his nephew Photius came and embraced him, calling him his father and his uncle. He was also put to many tortures with him. They were then imprisoned together for three years. Finally they were cast into a furnace, where they gave up their spirits, and their bodies were preserved unharmed. Saint Anicetus is one of the Holy Unmercenaries.

Wisdom of the Fathers

Wherefore then did He not do this, nor forgive the debt before the account? Desiring to teach him, from how many obligations He is delivering him, that in this way at least he might become more mild towards his fellow servant .... He gave more than he asked, remission and forgiveness of the entire debt.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 61 on Matthew 18, 4th Century

When then you are minded to be revengeful, consider that against yourself are you revengeful, not against another; that you art binding up your own sins, not your neighbors ....
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 61 on Matthew 18, 4th Century
