Humility is the Center of Salvation

An important Jewish leader had begged Jesus Christ to come to his home because his twelve year old daughter was very sick. Jesus agreed and, surrounded by a huge crowd of followers, was on His way to the house when He was interrupted by a devout and humble woman. This woman, sick for twelve years, believed with all her heart, that if she just was able to reach out and touch Jesus, she would be healed. Unlike Jairus the Jewish leader, she didn’t beg Jesus. She didn’t even want anyone to know she was there to be healed. In fact you could say she was sneaking up to Him to be healed, and would have just walked away after she was healed if she could.

This is exactly what she tried to do when Jesus cried out, “Who touched Me?” (Luke 8.45) Still trying to remain unknown, even though she had been miraculously healed, she kept herself hidden until Jesus insisted, "Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me." (Luke 8:46) Meanwhile, Jairus' twelve year old daughter died from her illness and his servants had come to tell him, "Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher." (Luke 8.49) Jairus was content to step away and return home when Jesus stopped him, "Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well." (Luke 8:50)

The humility of both Jairus the Jewish leader and the unnamed woman are at the center of the Gospel story. Jesus healed many thousands of men and women during His earthly ministry. Why would the Gospel take the time to tell us of these two particular women? There must be something more that Saint Luke wanted us to learn than just that Jesus has the power to heal. The story is about the humility of two faithful followers of Jesus Christ. In both cases, it wasn’t about the power of God, but their humble faith. “Be of good cheer.....do not be afraid....” (Luke 8.48, 50) were the words of God for these humble servants. When we are humble, there is no need for sorrow and fear.

Being humble may sound easy, but too often we don’t share the humility of either Jairus or the woman. I often hear people frustrated because things are not going as they thought they should. Oftentimes we don’t want to wait for what other people need from God. We want our blessings now! We think to ourselves, “I’ve been waiting a long time for this.” We don’t consider the needs of others.

Here's the thing about humility. Both the woman AND Jairus received what they needed from God. They received what they needed because they were humble. The woman showed her humility by not wanting attention. Jairus showed his humility because he was willing to wait. If we are willing to wait and not be the center of attention, we will always receive what we need from God. It just takes a bit of humility.

Στις 8 Νοεμβρίου ημέρα Τρίτη η Εκκλησία μας τιμά και εορτάζει την Σύναξη των Αρχαγγέλων Μιχαήλ και Γαβριήλ και όλων των Αγγελικών τάξεων.

Οι Άγγελοι είναι ασώματοι καί άυλοι. Υμνούν τον Θεό ακατάπαυστα. Περικυκλώνουν τον Θρόνο του Θεού στον Ουρανό, αλλά στέκονται με δέος και φόβο και σεβασμό, μη δυνάμενοι να ατενίσουν τον Θεό κατά πρόσωπο. Γι' αυτό και καλύπτουν με τις πτέρυγές τους το πρόσωπό τους.

Η εορτή αυτή έχει ιδιαίτερη θέση και σημασία για τους πιστούς, που θα την εξηγήσουμε στην συνέχεια :

Ο Θεός και Δημιουργός του σύμπαντος κόσμου, εκτός από τον ορατό και υλικό κόσμο, δημιούργησε και τον άυλο και αόρατο Αγγελικό κόσμο, ως Ποιητής «ορατών τε πάντων και αοράτων», καθώς ομολογούμε στο Σύμβολο της Πίστεώς μας. 

Συγκεκριμένα δημιούργησε δέκα Τάγματα Αγγέλων, τα εννέα από τα οποία έχουν τις εξής ονομασίες : «Σεραφίμ», «Χερουβίμ», χάγγελοι» και «Άγγελοι». Ο επικεφαλής όμως του δεκάτου τάγματος, ο Εωσφόρος, επειδή υπερηφανεύθηκε κατά του Θεού και τόλμησε να πει ότι θα βάλη τον θρόνο του επάνω στις νεφέλες και ότι θα γίνει όμοιος με τον Ύψιστο Θεό, γι' αυτό και εξέπεσε από τον Ουρανό στα καταχθόνια - σαν αστραπή - από την πολλή αλαζονεία και την έπαρσή του και έγινε ο διάβολος, ο αντίπαλος και πολέμιος της σωτηρίας των ανθρώπων. Τότε ο Θεός έταξε τον Μιχαήλ να είναι ο πρώτος ανάμεσα στα Αγγελικά Τάγματα, για την πολλή του κηδεμονία που επέδειξε προς το γένος των ανθρώπων και γιά την πολλή πιστότητα προς τις βουλές και τα προστάγματα Του, διότι εκείνος ήταν που συγκέντρωσε τους χορούς των Αγγέλων και φώναξε το «Πρόσχωμεν» που σημαίνει «ας προσέξωμε» να μη πέσωμε από το φως στο σκοτάδι, όπως έπεσε πριν λίγο ο σατανάς για την πολλή του υπερηφάνεια. 

Έκτοτε όσοι δεν παρασύρθηκαν στην πτώση, αλλά «εν ομονοία, ενώσει και φόβω Θεού» έμειναν σταθεροί, παρέμειναν συγχρόνως και άτρεπτοι πλέον στο αγαθό και στην υπακοή προς τον Κτίστη και Δημιουργό τους. 

Γι' αυτή την μοναδική του συμβολή ο Μιχαήλ κατέχει την πρώτη και κυρίαρχη θέση ανάμεσα στους Αρχαγγέλους, που ξεχωρίζει και στην Παλαιά και στην Καινή Διαθήκη. Έδειξε πολλές ευεργεσίες και χάριτες στο γένος των ανθρώπων, όπως γνωρίζουμε και όπως διαπιστώνουμε καθημερινά στην ζωή της Εκκλησίας.

Για τον χρόνο δημιουργίας των αγγέλων δεν υπάρχουν μαρτυρίες από την Αγία Γραφή. Οι περισσότεροι από τους Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας (Γρηγόριος Ναζιανζηνός, Ιωάννης Δαμασκηνός κλπ) δέχονται ότι οι άγγελοι υπήρχαν προτού δημιουργηθεί ο υλικός κόσμος.

Ως προς τη φύση των αγγέλων, οι εκκλησιαστικοί πατέρες διδάσκουν ότι οι άγγελοι έχουν σώμα λεπτό, αιθέριο και άφθαρτο (Τερτυλιανός, Ωριγένης, Βασίλειος ο Μέγας, Αυγουστίνος, Γρηγόριος ο Θεολόγος), χωρίς, όμως, να παύουν να είναι ασώματες και νοερές φύσεις, απρόσβλητες από τις αλλοιώσεις που παθαίνει το ανθρώπινο σώμα, τη φθορά και τον θάνατο.

Την 11η Ιουνίου 1954, καθιερώθηκε ο Αρχάγγελος Μιχαήλ προστάτης της Πολεμικής Αεροπορίας και η εορτή του Αρχαγγέλου (8 Νοεμβρίου) η επίσημη αεροπορική εορτή, η οποία θα εορτάζεται με λαμπρότητα σε όλες τις Μονάδες της ΠΑ.

Greetings in Christ,

On Sunday the 30th of October after much anticipation, our Philoptochos hosted the Annual Hunger Fight. What I witnessed that day was a beautiful expression of Christian philanthropy within our community. It was a joyful experience of comradery and light competition as we all raced toward the finish line. While I do not have the final number, I believe we packed all together something between 10 and 15 thousand meals for our local community and for those in fort myers who are still dealing with the effects of hurricane Ian. Thank you to our Philoptochos who organized the event, and thank you to everyone who participated!

 On Wednesday November 2nd we had our third monthly Parish MInistry NIght. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who volunteered to make sure that our people were fed and happy, and to those who volunteer in leading the discussion groups, lessons, and crafts. As well, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who continues to participate in this ministry, making it truly enjoyable in communal fellowship.

Coming up in our ministries, we have a major day ahead of us for all of our ministries. 

On Sunday the 13th of November we will gather in the morning for communal worship. Proceeding Divine Liturgy, Our Angels Day camp will take over, involving Hope and Joy as participants, and Goya as volunteers. Finally, the day will culminate with our Annual Friendsgiving Dinner!

 As a brief update concerning Sunday School for Sunday November 13th. 

Sunday School will take a different form- beginning with communal worship in the Divine Liturgy followed by the Angels Day Camp. 

 I would like to bring to your attention to Friday and Saturday the 18th, and 19th of November which is the Goya Addvent Lock-In. Please Register soon!

 My Challenge for us this week is to read a book or a smaller set of chapters of the Holy Bible, maybe choose one you haven't read before or one you have not  read in a while. If you haven't read the bible, you can use this as an opportunity to start. Holy Scripture informs us of what was, what is, and what will be. It is a part of our life and faith, and exists to help us come closer to God. Something of which we are called to do with the dawn of every day.

Paul the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople

Saint Paul was from Thessalonica. He became the secretary of Alexander, Patriarch of Constantinople (see Aug. 30), a deacon, and then the successor of Saint Alexander in about 337. Because of his virtue, his eloquence in teaching, and his zeal for Orthodoxy, the Arians hated and feared him. When the Arian Emperor Constantius, who was in Antioch, learned of Paul's election, he exiled Paul and proclaimed the Arian Eusebius Patriarch. Saint Paul went to Rome, where he found Saint Athanasius the Great also in exile. Provided with letters by Pope Julius, Paul returned to Constantinople, and after the death of Eusebius in 342, ascended again his rightful throne; the Arians meanwhile elected Macedonius, because he rejected the Son's con-substantiality with the Father (and the divinity of the Holy Spirit besides). When Constantius, yet at Antioch, learned of Paul's return, he sent troops to Constantinople to drive Paul out. The Saint returned to Rome, where Saint Athanasius also was again in exile. Constans, Emperor of the West, Constantius' brother, but Orthodox, wrote to Constantius that if Athanasius and Paul were not allowed to return to their sees, he would come with troops to restore them him-self. So Paul again returned to his throne. After the death of Constans, however, Constantius had Paul deposed. Because of the love of the people for Saint Paul, Philip the Prefect, who was sent for him, was compelled to arrest him secretly to avoid a sedition. Paul was banished to Cucusus, on the borders of Cilicia and Armenia; a town through which his most illustrious successor, Saint John Chrysostom would also pass on his way to Comana in his last exile. In Cucusus, about the year 350, as Saint Paul was celebrating the Divine Liturgy in the little house where he was a prisoner, the Arians strangled him with his own omophorion, so much did they fear him even in exile. His holy relics were brought back to Constantinople with honour by the Emperor Theodosius the Great.

"Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal me, Your servant, from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ.  Grant me patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health.  Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed.  I pray that You heal me as Your servant and grant me the gift of complete health.  For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen."

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 4th Mode

The women disciples of the Lord, having learned from the Angel the joyous news of the Resurrection and having rejected the ancestral decision, then told the apostles elatedly: Death has been stripped of its power; Christ God has risen, granting to the world His great mercy.

At that time, Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and He revealed Himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas, called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach, yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any fish?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there with fish lying on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after He was raised from the dead. .

The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Ἀδελφοί, εἰδότες ὅτι οὐ δικαιοῦται ἄνθρωπος ἐξ ἔργων νόμου, ἐὰν μὴ διὰ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, καὶ ἡμεῖς εἰς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐπιστεύσαμεν, ἵνα δικαιωθῶμεν ἐκ πίστεως Χριστοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων νόμου· διότι οὐ δικαιωθήσεται ἐξ ἔργων νόμου πᾶσα σάρξ. Εἰ δέ, ζητοῦντες δικαιωθῆναι ἐν Χριστῷ, εὑρέθημεν καὶ αὐτοὶ ἁμαρτωλοί, ἆρα Χριστὸς ἁμαρτίας διάκονος; Μὴ γένοιτο. Εἰ γὰρ ἃ κατέλυσα, ταῦτα πάλιν οἰκοδομῶ, παραβάτην ἐμαυτὸν συνίστημι. Ἐγὼ γὰρ διὰ νόμου νόμῳ ἀπέθανον, ἵνα θεῷ ζήσω. Χριστῷ συνεσταύρωμαι· ζῶ δέ, οὐκέτι ἐγώ, ζῇ δὲ ἐν ἐμοὶ Χριστός· ὃ δὲ νῦν ζῶ ἐν σαρκί, ἐν πίστει ζῶ τῇ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ, τοῦ ἀγαπήσαντός με καὶ παραδόντος ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ.

The Reading is from Luke 8:41-56

At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, ἄνθρωπός τις προσῆλθε τῷ Ἰησοῦ ᾧ ὄνομα ᾿Ιάειρος, καὶ αὐτὸς ἄρχων τῆς συναγωγῆς ὑπῆρχε· καὶ πεσὼν παρὰ τοὺς πόδας τοῦ ᾿Ιησοῦ παρεκάλει αὐτὸν εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ, ὅτι θυγάτηρ μονογενὴς ἦν αὐτῷ ὡς ἐτῶν δώδεκα, καὶ αὕτη ἀπέθνησκεν. ᾿Εν δὲ τῷ ὑπάγειν αὐτὸν οἱ ὄχλοι συνέπνιγον αὐτόν. καὶ γυνὴ οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἵματος ἀπὸ ἐτῶν δώδεκα, ἥτις ἰατροῖς προσαναλώσασα ὅλον τὸν βίον οὐκ ἴσχυσεν ὑπ᾿ οὐδενὸς θεραπευθῆναι, προσελθοῦσα ὄπισθεν ἥψατο τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ, καὶ παραχρῆμα ἔστη ἡ ῥύσις τοῦ αἵματος αὐτῆς. καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς· τίς ὁ ἁψάμενός μου; ἀρνουμένων δὲ πάντων εἶπεν ὁ Πέτρος καὶ οἱ σὺν αὐτῷ· ἐπιστάτα, οἱ ὄχλοι συνέχουσί σε καὶ ἀποθλίβουσι, καὶ λέγεις τίς ὁ ἁψάμενός μου; ὁ δὲ ᾿Ιησοῦς εἶπεν· ἥψατό μού τις· ἐγὼ γὰρ ἔγνων δύναμιν ἐξελθοῦσαν ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ. ἰδοῦσα δὲ ἡ γυνὴ ὅτι οὐκ ἔλαθε, τρέμουσα ἦλθε καὶ προσπεσοῦσα αὐτῷ δι᾿ ἣν αἰτίαν ἥψατο αὐτοῦ ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτῷ ἐνώπιον παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ ὡς ἰάθη παραχρῆμα. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ· θάρσει, θύγατερ, ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέ σε· πορεύου εἰς εἰρήνην.῎Ετι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἔρχεταί τις παρὰ τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου λέγων αὐτῷ ὅτι τέθνηκεν ἡ θυγάτηρ σου· μὴ σκύλλε τὸν διδάσκαλον. ὁ δὲ ᾿Ιησοῦς ἀκούσας ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ λέγων· μὴ φοβοῦ· μόνον πίστευε, καὶ σωθήσεται. ἐλθὼν δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν οὐκ ἀφῆκεν εἰσελθεῖν οὐδένα εἰ μὴ Πέτρον καὶ ᾿Ιωάννην καὶ ᾿Ιάκωβον καὶ τὸν πατέρα τῆς παιδὸς καὶ τὴν μητέρα. ἔκλαιον δὲ πάντες καὶ ἐκόπτοντο αὐτήν. ὁ δὲ εἶπε· μὴ κλαίετε· οὐκ ἀπέθανεν, ἀλλὰ καθεύδει. καὶ κατεγέλων αὐτοῦ, εἰδότες ὅτι ἀπέθανεν. αὐτὸς δὲ ἐκβαλὼν ἔξω πάντας καὶ κρατήσας τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῆς ἐφώνησε λέγων· ἡ παῖς, ἐγείρου. καὶ ἐπέστρεψε τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀνέστη παραχρῆμα, καὶ διέταξεν αὐτῇ δοθῆναι φαγεῖν. καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῖς. ὁ δὲ παρήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς μηδενὶ εἰπεῖν τὸ γεγονός.

To aid the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, the widowed, the handicapped, the victims of disasters, to undertake the burial of impoverished persons and to offer assistance to anyone who may need the help of the Church through fund-raising efforts.

St Nicholas Kitchen

Saint Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral that provides hot meals, helping hands and meaningful relationships to the impoverished in our community. The heart for this ministry is illustrated in the book of Matthew 25:35-36:

 “….For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me….”

St. Nicholas Kitchen will continue preparing the Monday meals from 7:30 – 11:00 am. The meals will be delivered Monday's to the new Hope Center at the Sheppard center where the meals will be given to those in need by their, and our volunteers. We still need volunteers, food and monetary donations. Meals will be served from 11:00 – 12:00 pm. For further information, please call Chris Palaidis at (727) 808-3895.
