Frathanasios-3

Greed is Spiritual Cancer

In the parable of the Rich Fool, Jesus teaches us the deadly result of a greedy heart. Faced with full barns and a banner crop, the Rich Fool panics because he has no place to store his growing wealth. “I will do this,” he says, “I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.” (Luke 12.18) Unfortunately for the Rich Fool, that was the night he would die and face judgment for the condition of his heart.

Greed is a cancer that eats away at our heart, one dollar at a time. Each of us has been blessed with material gifts from God. Each of us is faced with considering how we will make use of the wealth that God has given us. Will we panic and attempt to store our wealth for tomorrow thinking we will enjoy comfort for years to come? This was the mistake of the Rich Fool when he said, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” (Luke 12.19) Will we be grateful for the blessings that God has given to us and use them for His glory helping and serving others?

Greed is a cancer that turns the heart inward toward darkness rather than upward toward the Light of God. Once our heart has been affected by this cancer, it begins to spread to every other part of our body. A greedy heart fills our minds with hate for our fellow human beings. A greedy heart recognizes only cold, hard cash rather than the warmth of fellowship. A greedy heart sends the cancerous poison of selfishness to our minds, hands, feet, and eventually our very soul dies in darkness.

LIke most illnesses, greed has a cure, but like most illnesses greed can only be cured when we admit we are sick in the first place. The cure for greed is generosity. If we can admit that we are being greedy, then we can be cured. When we are generous, the coldness in our heart is warmed by God’s love and grace.

Consider today’s Gospel passage as a test. Remember the Rich Fool’s mistake was that he thought only about his own needs. On the surface, he wasn’t being greedy. He was only stocking up for the future. Are we worried more about stocking up for the future, or do we look for ways to be generous with our blessings?

It is not generous to give from what we don’t need. If we only give from what we have left over, no matter how much we give, we are no better than the Rich Fool. True generosity is when we give from what we need and give it for others. Thinking about the needs of others rather than stocking up for ourselves is being generous.

If we do not learn to be generous, our soul will remain poor. “So is he who lays up treasures for himself, and is not rich toward God.” (Luke 12.21) Lucky for us...we still have time to be generous. Something to consider this year for Thanksgiving.

Fr Theofanis

Frtheofani3g

Greetings in Christ,

Today I would like to tell you about some phone applications that I personally use that may provide value to you in your spiritual journey as you live day to day.

St. Nicholas Cathedral App - our Parish app has our calendar of events, announcements for the parish and our youth ministries, and access to the live stream feed during all of our services.

 daily readings app goarch

Daily Readings App – I use this app to keep up with the church calendar, fasting rules for any given day, feast days, lives of the saints, troparia and kontakia and many common prayers. All of this and some more, in both Greek and English. It is available on any smartphone. Though there is a free version, I highly recommend spending the dollar it costs for the full version.

Pray Always! – This prayer book app is a great resource of prayers, daily and more..

Catena Bible & Commentaries – This is one of the best bible apps available. It is easy to navigate, and includes tens of thousands of patristic commentaries by 250+ authors. Once you select “commentaries by early church fathers, an=d byzantine theologians, you will have access to those commentaries by tapping on any verse. Matthew 4:4, had commentary from Saints Gregory the Great, John Chrysostom, and Theophylact. After the commentaries, it provides Related Verses from the Old and New Testaments.

 AFR icon

Ancient Faith Radio (AFR) – I use this app mostly to access  faith related podcasts and commentaries.

GOA - DCS / AGES Digital Chant Stand – Last but not least, this app has been a companion through almost every Church service I have attended in the last 5 years or so.. This app will appeal to those of  you who like to follow the services closely. It pulls together the services for every day of the year, though it has a wide use and functions, I mostly use the reader version of the services to follow along. If you are interested in the music of the service there is also a wealth of resources within.

Gregory the Righteous of Decapolis

Saint Gregory who was from Irenopolis of the Decapolis of Asia Minor, was the son of Sergius and Mary. He became a monk as a young man, and after struggling for many years in virtue and prayer under obedience to a wise spiritual father, he was informed by revelation that it was the will of God for him to live, like the Patriarch Abraham, with no certain dwelling, moving from place to place. His journeyings took him to Ephesus, Constantinople, Corinth, Rome, Sicily, Thessalonica, and again to Constantinople, where, after many labours in defence of Orthodoxy against Iconoclasm, he reposed in peace in the first half of the ninth century. He had two disciples, one of whom was Saint Joseph the Hymnographer (see Apr. 3), who wrote the Menaion service for Saint Gregory, his father in Christ.

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal 2nd Mode

Angelic powers appeared at Your tomb, and those guarding it became like dead, and at Your grave Mary was standing, seeking Your most pure body. You plundered Hades, not being tempted by it; You encountered the virgin, granting life. O Lord, who rose from the dead, glory to You!

Apolytikion for Forefeast of the Entry of the Theotokos in the 4th Mode

By blossoming forth the only Ever-virgin as fruit, today holy Anna doth betroth us all unto joy, instead of our former grief; on this day she doth fulfil her vows to the Most High, leading her with joy into the Lord's holy temple, who truly is the temple and pure Mother of God the Word.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

First Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Matthew 28:16-20

At that time, the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw Him they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age. Amen."

First Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

9th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 2:4-10

Brethren, God who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God: not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

9th Sunday of Luke

Gospel Reading

9th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 12:16-21

The Lord said this parable: "The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." As he said these things, he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

9th Sunday of Luke

Wisdom of the Fathers

I cannot be silent about the story of Hesychius the Horebite. He passed his life in complete negligence, without paying the least attention to his soul. Then he became extremely ill, and for an hour he left his body.

And when he came to himself, he begged us all to leave him immediately. And he built up the door of his cell, and he stayed in it for twelve years without ever uttering a word to anyone, and without eating anything but bread and water.
