Recent studies have found that as many as 60% of our youth go to college and largely drop-out of church life. As a parish, we need to do whatever we can to reach out to this group - letting them know that they are on our minds and in our prayers. With that in mind, we are asking for donations from our parish to help our new college outreach ministry. The goal for now is to send fall and spring care-packages to our college kids as well as to host a lunch for them - with our parish priest and parish leaders - over winter and summer break. Any donation is appreciated. Please mark the donation, "College Ministry" so we know where to apply it.
Please get the word out to all of our college students that on Thursday, December 27, at 6 p.m., we'll be having a dinner for our college youth at Pallas Restaurant (1657 S 108th St, Milwaukee, WI 53214). If you know someone will be attending, please let us know (call the church office at 414-778-1555 or email Flora Copoulos at panagaki@sbcglobal.net). We hope to see all our college students there!
There are many ways to send your contributions to our church, other than cash or check. For example, our newest option is to
You can now give to our church by using your smartphone via text using debit/credit card or ACH payments. It will take you about 2 minutes to set up your payment method, which is saved for future text gifts! Shortly after, you will receive a text with a link to our secure online text giving page where you can choose a specific fund and set up your payment method. At the moment, the available funds you can give to by text are Stewardship, Candles, Maintenance, Fee (to pay for a church fee) or General Donation (default).
You know that you can also give online and setup recurring payments by visiting our website (give.stsconstantinehelenwi.org) and clicking on the "Click to Donate Online" button. Windy City has compiled this guide of scholarships that are available to Greek Americans. "We’re dedicated to providing resources for our community, and we’re so excited to present Greek American Scholarship Guide 2017. ... Find information here to begin your research and application process. Some deadlines have already passed this year, but later this year, applications for 2018 will be posted. That will give you time to work through this information and determine your own eligibility and what opportunities to pursue. With the ever-increasing cost of college education, we recommend that you apply for as many scholarships as you can – no matter how small. The numbers will add up and every dollar makes a difference. In this guide, find “mini profiles” of scholarship awards of more than $5000. Also find a list of links to other organizations that offer smaller awards. Look for ideas on other places to search for opportunities, as well as tips on applying and winning scholarships. A very special thank you to our sponsors. We’re grateful to The John C. Kulis Charitable Foundation and PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation for their continued support. You’ll learn also more about them in this guide. Dive in! Happy Scholarship Hunting!
Deadline to apply for their scholarship is July 31st, 2019. Visit: http://www.panhellenicsf.org/apply/ for the application
Saint Plato contested in martyrdom in 266, when Agrippinus was proconsul. He was from the city of Ancyra in the province of Galatia.
Saint Romanus, who was from Antioch, lived during the reign of Maximian. He presented himself before Asclepiades the Eparch, and rebuked him, saying, "The idols are not gods; even a little child could tell you that." Then the Saint asked that a child be brought in from the market, that he might be the judge of the matter at hand. Therefore, when the child was asked, "Which God must we worship?" he replied, "Christ." The child was beaten mercilessly and beheaded at the command of the tyrant. As for Saint Romanus, his tongue was cut out, and then he was cast into prison, where he was strangled in the year 305.
Third Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Mark 16:9-20
When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.
After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.
Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."
So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.
Third Orthros Gospel
Prokeimenon. Plagal Fourth Mode. Psalm 75.11,1.
Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them.
Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel.
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:1-7.
Brethren, I, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift.
Plagal Fourth Mode.
9th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 12:16-21
The Lord said this parable: "The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." As he said these things, he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
