Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Fourth Mode. Psalm 18.4,1.
Their voice has gone out into all the earth.
Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16.

Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me.

Gospel Reading

8th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 10:25-37

At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live."

But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

Saints and Feasts

Allsaint
November 15

Nativity Fast Begins

The Nativity Fast is one of four main fast periods throughout the ecclesiastical year. Beginning on November 15 and concluding on December 24, the Nativity Fast gives individuals the opportunity to prepare for the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord and Savior in the Flesh on December 25. By abstaining from certain food and drink, particularly from meat, fish, dairy products, olive oil, and wine, as well as focusing more deeply on prayer and almsgiving, we can find that the primary aim of fasting is to make us conscious of our dependence upon God.

Agape Coffee Fellowship

Today’s Coffee Fellowship is sponsored by GOYA and JOY. We ask GOYA and JOY families to bring a nut free food item/dessert to share. Our youth groups look forward to helping in the various roles of our church today, from parish council to coffee fellowship. We appreciate all that our community does each and every day to create a loving home where we feel welcome, loved and close to God. We know it takes a lot of work and this is our little way of saying thank you!

Please RSVP to goya@agoc.us whether or not you will be attending and if you will be bringing a food item.

Christmas Card

Dear Parishioner and Benefactor of Our Assumption Church: Once again our community will be preparing a Parish Christmas Card. I am sure that all will agree - last year’s Christmas Card was a proclamation of our Lord’s Birth. Again, we are certain that all of you will want to take part in this year’s card. When you stop and think about it, it is really a good Christmas idea! Instead of mailing costly cards to everyone separately, express your Christmas Greetings and Cheer along with the community. We are asking for a donation of $30.00, however, if you are able to give more, we ask you to do so, keeping in mind that all the proceeds will go to our Sunday School and Youth Program. Please complete the form below and return it to a Parish Council member, or the church office NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 1, 2021. List your name or names as you would like it to appear on the card. A Special Bonus: By participating you will be spared the tedious task of addressing, licking stamps and envelopes, not to mention the increasing costs for cards and postage!!!

NAME(s) ________________________________________________________________ Enclosed is my donation for $30.00 or $_________________ (Please make checks payable to the Assumption Church - marked for “Christmas Card”)

Light-a-Candle

Light a Candle and Say a Prayer at Assumption

“It is impossible to imagine an Orthodox church in which candles are not lit.” (Blessed Simeon of Thessalonica, 15th Century)

Lighting a candle in the Narthex is one of the first things many people do upon entering an Orthodox Church. This act symbolizes many things. For some, it is an offering of prayer for one’s personal needs or that of a family member or friend. Others light candles and pray for protection, safety, and courage to live this life without fear.

Lighting candles is an important part of our faith and we know that it has been - and continues to be - challenging for some to be unable to pray and light candles inside the church over the past year.

We are now pleased to offer AGOC parishioners the option to light a candle when you are unable to attend in-person services. Should you wish to light a candle, a member of the Parish Council will be happy to do so for you during services. Please use this link: https://agocdanbury.square.site/
