Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra

This Saint lived during the reign of Saint Constantine the Great, and reposed in 330, As a young man, he desired to espouse the solitary life. He made a pilgrimage to the holy city Jerusalem, where he found a place to withdraw to devote himself to prayer. It was made known to him, however, that this was not the will of God for him, but that he should return to his homeland to be a cause of salvation for many. He returned to Myra, and was ordained bishop. He became known for his abundant mercy, providing for the poor and needy, and delivering those who had been unjustly accused. No less was he known for his zeal for the truth. He was present at the First Ecumenical Council of the 318 Fathers at Nicaea in 325; upon hearing the blasphemies that Arius brazenly uttered against the Son of God, Saint Nicholas struck him on the face. Since the canons of the Church forbid the clergy to strike any man at all, his fellow bishops were in perplexity what disciplinary action was to be taken against this hierarch whom all revered. In the night our Lord Jesus Christ and our Lady Theotokos appeared to certain of the bishops, informing them that no action was to be taken against him, since he had acted not out of passion, but extreme love and piety. The Dismissal Hymn for holy hierarchs, The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock ... was written originally for Saint Nicholas. He is the patron of all travellers, and of sea-farers in particular; he is one of the best known and best loved Saints of all time.

Brethren, obey your leaders and submit to them; for they are keeping watch over your souls, as men who will have to give account. Let them do this joyfully, and not sadly, for that would be of no advantage to you. Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things. At that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity." And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the sabbath day." Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

This Week’s Sermon

Dear Brothers and sisters in Christ

Today we hear in the Gospel a story of healing. In modern America, this story may not make sense if we look at it literally. We live in a country where we have hospitals working around the clock; if someone is sick help is around the corner.

In the story of the woman who came for healing on Saturday, we see that the problem is not the healing either. The problem here is that the leaders of the community put their local traditions above the human person. They do not care if this person has been suffering for eighteen years. They want her to go home and come back the next day.

God had given them a commandment to keep the Sabbath holy and do nothing on that day. It was the law of God. No one could even argue with them, but Jesus was breaking that law and according to them he deserved punishment.

This story teaches us that things in life are not black and white, correct or incorrect. Sometimes instead of the correct thing, we need to choose the right thing. We sometimes need to examine and see if there is a difference between the incorrect thing and the wrong thing. To be more accurate, it is always better to look at things from different perspectives, different angles. The easiest thing is to look at life from our own perspective and identify the correct and the incorrect according to ourselves. Today, however, as Christians we are called to look at life from the perspective of the other. The perspective of others helps us to determine whether things are right or wrong.

The second lesson we learn today is that above all we have to value life. We need to value our life and the life of the other. These two lessons go hand in hand. The first one makes sense only if we look at it in the light of the second. If we value the life of the other as much as we value our own life, then it is much easier to look at conditions and circumstances of life from more than one perspective, from more than one angle.

Like all the other commandments of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, these are not very easy lessons to implement in life either. Looking at life from someone else's perspective requires the ability to sacrifice your own perspective. This is the only way to the Truth. When we have strong opinions we are most likely far from the Truth. It is when we give up our own perspectives that we become able to understand the perspectives of others and get closer to the Truth who is Christ. Love the Truth because it will set us free.

Κήρυγμα της Εβδομάδας

Αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδελφές έν Χριστό:

Σήμερα ακούμε στο Ευαγγέλιο μια ιστορία θεραπείας. Στη σύγχρονη Αμερική, αυτή η ιστορία μπορεί να μην έχει νόημα αν την κοιτάξουμε κυριολεκτικά. Ζούμε σε μια χώρα όπου λειτουργούν νοσοκομεία όλο το 24ωρο. Αν κάποιος είναι άρρωστος, η βοήθεια είναι πολύ κοντά.

Στην ιστορία της γυναίκας που ήρθε για θεραπεία το Σάββατο, βλέπουμε ότι το πρόβλημα δεν είναι ούτε η θεραπεία. Το πρόβλημα εδώ είναι ότι οι ηγέτες της κοινότητας θέτουν τις τοπικές παραδόσεις τους πάνω από το ανθρώπινο πρόσωπο. Δεν με νοιάζει αν αυτό το άτομο υποφέρει για δεκαοχτώ χρόνια. Θέλουν να πάει σπίτι και να επιστρέψει την επόμενη μέρα.

Ο Θεός τους είχε δώσει εντολή να κρατήσουν το Σάββατο ιερό και να μην κάνουν τίποτα εκείνη την ημέρα. Ήταν ο νόμος του Θεού. Κανείς δεν μπορούσε καν να διαφωνήσει μαζί τους, αλλά ο Ιησούς παραβίαζε αυτόν τον νόμο και σύμφωνα με αυτούς άξιζε τιμωρία.

Αυτή η ιστορία μάς διδάσκει ότι τα πράγματα στη ζωή δεν είναι ασπρόμαυρα, σωστά ή λανθασμένα. Μερικές φορές αντί για το σωστό, πρέπει να επιλέξουμε το δίκιο. Μερικές φορές πρέπει να εξετάσουμε και να δούμε αν υπάρχει διαφορά μεταξύ του λανθασμένου και του άδικου. Για να είμαστε πιο ακριβείς, είναι πάντα καλύτερο να βλέπουμε πράγματα από διαφορετικές προοπτικές, διαφορετικές γωνίες. Το ευκολότερο είναι να δούμε τη ζωή από τη δική μας οπτική και να εντοπίσουμε το σωστό και το λάθος σύμφωνα με τον εαυτό μας. Σήμερα, ωστόσο, ως Χριστιανοί καλούμαστε να δούμε τη ζωή από την οπτική γωνία του άλλου. Η προοπτική των άλλων μας βοηθά να προσδιορίσουμε αν τα πράγματα είναι σωστά ή λάθος.

Το δεύτερο μάθημα που μαθαίνουμε σήμερα είναι ότι πάνω απ 'όλα πρέπει να εκτιμήσουμε τη ζωή. Πρέπει να εκτιμήσουμε τη ζωή μας και τη ζωή του άλλου. Αυτά τα δύο μαθήματα πάνε χέρι χέρι. Το πρώτο έχει νόημα μόνο αν το δούμε υπό το φως του δεύτερου. Εάν εκτιμούμε τη ζωή του άλλου όσο και τη δική μας ζωή, τότε είναι πολύ πιο εύκολο να δούμε τις συνθήκες και τις συνθήκες της ζωής από περισσότερες από μία από τις προοπτικές, από περισσότερες από μία γωνίες.

Όπως όλες οι άλλες εντολές του Κυρίου και του Σωτήρα μας Ιησού Χριστού, ούτε αυτά είναι πολύ εύκολα μαθήματα που μπορούν να εφαρμοστούν στη ζωή. Κοιτάζοντας τη ζωή από την οπτική γωνία κάποιου άλλου απαιτεί τη δυνατότητα να θυσιάσετε τη δική σας προοπτική. Αυτός είναι ο μόνος τρόπος για την Αλήθεια. Όταν έχουμε ισχυρές απόψεις, πιθανότατα απέχουμε από την Αλήθεια. Μόλις εγκαταλείψουμε τις δικές μας προοπτικές, γινόμαστε ικανοί να κατανοήσουμε τις προοπτικές των άλλων και να πλησιάσουμε την Αλήθεια που είναι ο Χριστός. Αγαπήστε την Αλήθεια γιατί θα μας απελευθερώσει.
