Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 2nd Tone

When You descended unto death, O Lord who yourself are immortal Life, then did You mortify Hades by the lightning flash of Your Divinity. Also when You raised the dead from the netherworld, all the Powers of the heavens were crying out: O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory to You. Prokeimenon. 2nd Tone. Psalm 117.14,18.
The Lord is my strength and my song.
Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 11:31-33; 12:1-9.

Brethren, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed for ever, knows that I do not lie. At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me, but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands.

I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven -- whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise --whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows -- and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. Though if I wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for I shall be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

A Word from Fr. John:

From St. Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle to the Romans (early 100s); written while he was en route to his martyrdom:

 

“The only petition I would have you put forward on my behalf is that I may be given sufficient inward and outward strength to be as resolute in will as in words, and a Christian in reality instead of only in repute (though once I have the reality, I can have the repute too, and be held loyal and true even when the world can see me no longer). For good does not reside in what our eyes can see; the fact that Jesus Christ is now within the Father is why we perceive Him so much the more clearly. For the work we have to do is no affair of persuasive speaking; Christianity lies in achieving greatness in the face of a world’s hatred.”

 

Special Prayer Requests: 

We pray for mercy, life, peace, and healing of all parishioners, and especially His Grace Bishop Dimitrios of Xanthos as he recovers from foot surgery, Augustina, Margaret, James, Kyriake, Ingrid (Evangelia) Fotianos, Irene Hastalis, Jim Manos, Chresanthe Lemieux, Jane Anderson, Betty & Fred Day, Despina Xynidis, and Nicola Lykam’s father-in-law and mother-in-law with health issues. Pray for the Sunday School and all efforts of our teachers, students, and families, for the Adult Bible Study, and the continued growth and edification of the parish family ministries, and for the Colburn and Ritsi missionary families.

Koliva is prepared by the families or by HTGOC volunteers.  Due to the labor involved and cost of materials, there is a charge of $100 for preparing the Koliva.  Frequent volunteers include Faye Peterson, pete9839@comcast.net and Angela Lekos, angelmou1@att.net.

 

Book Store:

We have a couple of Christmas ornaments and a few packs of Christmas cards available. We also have new incense and home size premium charcoal. - Lisa Colburn

 

Sunday School:

In our youngest class, in addition to introducing the children to the liturgical life of the Church, we are introducing and reinforcing some lessons about the Gospel reading we have just heard in church. We have some fun songs and crafts to reinforce the theme. Parents can make preparations to “get ready” for Sunday by reading the Gospel for that day, going to bed early, and making Saturday night a “quiet night."  

 

Iconography Program at Holy Trinity Church November 2nd:

  • We will host a special presentation “An Introduction to Byzantine Iconography,” on Saturday, November 2nd at 3 p.m.
  • Following the presentation, there will be refreshments and an opportunity to meet the iconographer Aristidis Kovaci.  Please invite your friends to see our beautiful iconography and enjoy our hospitality.
  • At 5 p.m., Fr. John will serve Vespers.

 

Diakonia Retreat:

Youth Safety Compliance: 

All parishioners seeking blessing to participate in Sunday School and Youth events throughout this Ecclesiastical Year are required to complete the registration in order to have access to the needed background check which is facilitated through our Metropolis Youth Office.  Please see all details of the new compliance www.goarch.org/safety and www.goarch.org/youth-safety-compliance, and contact our Parish Youth Safety Compliance Officer, Margo Kelley (htgocpresident@gmail.com or (602) 617-2467) for further details.

 

Philoptochos News:

  • Osceola Elementary School, our partner school, is seeking mentors for children who need extra help and support. Mentors need to contact the St. John County School Board and complete an application process. Once accepted as a mentor, there are ongoing training programs. Please contact Irene Pergeorelis or Susan Stone if you are interested.
  • Also, we have a challenge from the Interfaith Advisory Council for St. John County Schools to raise $100.00 in gift cards to Target or Walmart. These will be given to appropriately screened and approved families to use to buy perishable food for Thanksgiving dinner. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. Please see Irene Pergeorelis or Susan Stone if you have a gift card you would like to donate.
  • On Sunday, November 3rd the Philoptochos will be passing a tray to raise money for the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The money will be sent to National Philoptochos and used for philanthropic programs and charities of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. We thank you for your generosity.

  • Philoptochos membership meeting on Sunday, November 17th after Liturgy.

 

Youth Dance Group:

The Holy Trinity youth dance groups, Asteria & Asterakia, raised $240 during their performances at the Greek Festival.  The dancers and their families enjoyed an evening of Pizza & Pumpkins on Oct 18.  The purpose of the dance group is to bring our youth together in a spirit of Christian fellowship and love; encourage our families to be active participants in our Orthodox Faith, the Church and promote our culture.  Opa!

 

Stewardship – A Pattern of Caring:

Giving is a habit that begins with a commitment. Becoming an active steward requires a conscious decision to actively support the needs of the Church. The commitment card we offer to Holy Trinity parish each year encourages us to give regularly. There are extra cards in church, or you can call the church office. 

 

Weekly Offering: 

Sacrificial Offerings - Weekly Offering: Oct. 20th - Candles $99; Tray $81; Stewardship $4267

 

Contributions - Tracking Your Giving:

  • Each time you contribute funds to the parish, the notation on the memo line of your check allows us to identify your intentions:  Stewardship, Candles, Trays, Memorials, etc.  
  • If you are setting up contributions through your bank, please be sure that a specific notation (ex: stewardship) is included for each transaction.
  • For any cash contributions, please use one of the envelopes in the Narthex so that we can add that amount to your record of donations.

 

Volunteers:

Volunteers interested in assisting with the development of tools and courses for translators and publishers of Orthodox liturgical texts worldwide are needed.  Software developers, annotators and former Wycliffe translators needed.  See olw.ocmc.org.
