    Epistle Reading

    Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Daniel 3.26,27.
    Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers.
    Verse: For you are just in all you have done.

    The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15.

    Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned.

    When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful.

    All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

    The Reading is from Luke 8:5-15

    The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

    For by seed here He means His doctrine, and by land, the souls of men, and by the sower, Himself .... For as the sower makes no distinction in the land submitted to him, but simply and indifferently casts his seed; so He Himself too makes no distinction of rich and poor, of wise and unwise, of slothful or diligent, of brave or cowardly; but He discourses unto all, fulfilling His part, although foreknowing the results.

    When you see life's pleasures, beware that they might not distract you, for they conceal death's snares. Likewise a fisherman casts not his hook to no purpose. As bait for his hook, the enemy uses the delusion of sensuality to arouse desire, that he might thereby catch men's souls and subject them to himself. A soul which has been caught to serve the enemy's will then serves as a snare for other souls, for it conceals the grief of sin with its apparent delight.

    Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council

    On the Sunday that falls on or immediately after the eleventh of this month, we chant the Service to the 350 holy Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, which gathered in Nicaea in 787 under the holy Patriarch Tarasius and during the reign of the Empress Irene and her son, Constantine Porphyrogenitus, to refute the Iconoclast heresy, which had received imperial support beginning with the Edict issued in 726 by Emperor Leo the Isaurian. Many of the holy Fathers who condemned Iconoclasm at this holy Council later died as Confessors and Martyrs for the holy Icons during the second assult of Iconoclasm in the ninth century, especially during the reigns of Leo the Armenian and Theophilus.

    Coffee Hour today is being hosted by the Collins and Nelms families.  We thank both families!

    The St. Ypomoni Philoptochos Chapter has designated this Sunday, October 13th, 2019, as Breast Cancer Awareness Sunday.  They will be accepting donations in the Church hall for the American Cancer Society to help continue the fight for a cure.  Please stop by the Philoptochos table after Liturgy to show your support for this worthwhile cause.  Thank you!

    The Orthodox Men’s Group (OMG) will be meeting this Tuesday, October 15th at 5:00 pm for Happy Hour @ Brewhouse South in Cool Springs.  Let’s get together for Bible study, community socials, Church support and any other topics you would like to cover.  Together we strengthen our Orthodox Faith.  Hope you can join us!

    This Wednesday, October 16th, we will be having a special guest at Bible Study at 6:00 pm.  We will be joined by Fr. Justin, the librarian at St. Catherine’s monastery in Sinai.  We hope that you will join us for this special event as we welcome Fr. Justin to Holy Trinity!

    Philoptochos will begin baking this week for their Christmas bake sale.  They will be baking koulouria on Wednesday, October 16th, and Thursday, October 17th, starting at 9:30 am and cinnamon bread on Monday, October 21st, and Tuesday, October 22nd, at 9:30 am.  Whether you can come and help all day or only for one hour, any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

    Fr. Michael & Family Welcome Dinner!  Please join us on Saturday, October 19th, after Vespers for a pot-luck dinner to welcome Fr. Michael, Presvytera Katherine, Matias & Andrea to our Holy Trinity family!  Please bring your favorite dish to share.  Beverages, utensils and plasticware will be provided.  Hope to see you all there!

    AHEPA is honoring all of our church members who have served in the military. If you served your country, please add your picture with a caption to our Wall of Honor which will be on display through Veterans Day weekend. Thank you!

    ICONOGRAPHY UPDATE!  Please mark your calendars!  On October 20th, we will need help after Liturgy moving the Liturgical items from the Sanctuary to the Church hall in anticipation of the iconography installation which is set to start the last week of October.  Church services will be held in the Church hall starting October 21st until approximately the first week in December. 

    HELPING VETERANS IN NEED - This fall, the men of AHEPA have teamed up with a local non-profit, Operation Stand Down TN, to help veterans in need. From October 6 - November 3rd, you can donate lightly used ADULT clothes (preference winter clothes) or gift cards for basic needs. AHEPA will have a table in fellowship hall to accept your donations. Let’s help some local veterans get back on their feet!  Here is a giving guideline: Gasoline cards (Fuel only @ Mapco, Kroger, Exxon, Shell) - $25 increments, Walmart Cards in increments of $25 & $50, Kroger Cards in increments of $25 & $50, Men and women’s gently used clothing including shoes and boots, Reader eyeglasses (Dollar Stores) 1.25, 2.0, 2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 strengths, and Men’s 2X and 3X t-shirts. All donations will be delivered to Operation Stand Down TN the week before Veteran’s Day.  Thank you for your support for this project! http://osdtn.org/

                                                 CHURCH ETIQUETTE FAQs

    Who may receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church?

    Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and therefore is offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Everyone is welcome to receive the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) at the end of the Divine Liturgy.

    How should I dress in the Orthodox Church?

    Wear modest and appropriate attire.  Common sense and good judgment should prevail.  Avoid wearing lipstick when venerating the icons and receiving Holy Communion.  Also, please refrain from chewing gum.

    Why do the Ushers/Parish Council ask us to wait before entering at certain times of the service?  

    There are several parts of the Liturgy where all movement within the Sanctuary should be restricted, including entering the Nave from the Narthex.  These parts are:

    1)       Procession of the Priest and Acolytes with the Gospel

    2)       The reading of the Epistle and Gospel

    3)       The priest’s homily (sermon)

    4)       The Great Procession of the Priest and Altar Boys with the Holy Gifts

    5)       The recitation of the Nicene Creed

    6)        The prayers of offering and consecration (From “Thine own of thine own…” until “Especially for our most Holy Lady….”

    7)       The recitation of the Lord’s Prayer

    8)       Special services (40-day blessings, memorials, processions…) 

    My child is being noisy.  What should I do?

    Children are a great blessing in Church.  It is very special to hear our young people begin to participate in the Liturgy, by reciting the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and singing along with our hymns.  It is also important that children are present from a very young age to absorb the holy atmosphere of the Divine Liturgy.  But sometimes, children have a hard time being quiet or sitting still.   Little noises here and there are not worrisome, but in those times when the situation becomes very boisterous, there is a cry room located in the back of the Sanctuary in addition to a foyer with a monitor to watch the Liturgy while the child calms down.

    Archbishop Elpidophoros To Lead Delegation to Hurricane-Ravaged Bahamas

    10/10/2019

    His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America will arrive in the Bahamas on October 13 for a pastoral visit to areas recently affected by Hurricane Dorian. Leading a delegation from the Archdiocese, His Eminence is scheduled to celebrate a Hierarchal Divine Liturgy at the parish of the Annunciation of the Mother of God in Nassau.

    Archbishop Elpidophoros Visits Saint Basil Academy

    On October 3, 2019, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America was joyously welcomed by Saint Basil Academy’s administrators, children and staff. The Archbishop began with a Trisagion service at the gravesite of Archbishop Michael of blessed memory.

    Assembly of Bishops of the USA and the Standing Conference of Oriental Orthodox Churches Revive the Joint Commission of Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches

    NEW YORK – Representatives of Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Christian churches met today at the Armenian Cathedral of St. Vartan for the first meeting of the joint commission in nearly a decade. The meeting began with a common prayer service followed by open discussions.
