Reading
Through the Apostolic Constitutions (Book VIII, ch. 42), the Church of Christ has received the custom to make commemorations for the departed on the third, ninth, and fortieth days after their repose. Since many throughout the ages, because of an untimely death in a faraway place, or other adverse circumstances, have died without being deemed worthy of the appointed memorial services, the divine Fathers, being so moved in their love for man, have decreed that a common memorial be made this day for all pious Orthodox Christians who have reposed from all ages past, so that those who did not have particular memorial services may be included in this common one for all. Also, the Church of Christ teaches us that alms should be given to the poor by the departed one's kinsmen as a memorial for him.Besides this, since we make commemoration tomorrow of the Second Coming of Christ, and since the reposed have neither been judged, nor have received their complete recompense (Acts 17:31; II Peter 2:9; Heb. 11:39-40), the Church rightly commemorates the souls today, and trusting in the boundless mercy of God, she prays Him to have mercy on sinners. Furthermore, since the commemoration is for all the reposed together, it reminds each of us of his own death, and arouses us to repentance.
Apolytikion of Saturday of Souls
Plagal of the Fourth Tone
Only Creator who out of the depths of wisdom lovingly govern all things and upon all bestow what is accordingly best for them, give rest to the souls of Your servants, for they have placed their hope in You, our Author and Maker and God.
Kontakion of Saturday of Souls

Give rest, O Christ, among the Saints to the souls of Your servants, where there is no pain, no sorrow, no grieving, but life everlasting.

**************MARILENA'S MEALS: I was hungry and you fed me." Matthew 25:35
Our Marilena’s Meals program is not currently distributing meals, but we are still finding ways to actively support our most vulnerable members of NYC; those without food and shelter.
We have partnered with the Antonio Olivieri Drop-In Center at 257 West 30th Street, as they are continuing their efforts to give aid to those in need.
With the funds donated in September, October and November, we purchased 58 pairs of sweatpants and 38 sweatshirts, as we were alerted that those are the items that are most in need for the men and women receiving services at the center. We also purchased gloves for when the weather turns cold.
Our December 2020 funds raised were donated to Philoxenia. Philoxenia will be arranging for dinner for the residents of the Jan Peek House in Peekskill, NY, a shelter for about 25 individuals who are homeless https://www.chhop.org/. They provided 40 meals for the residents so that they can have a second serving and so that there is enough food for any walk-ins. Visit https://philoxenia.org/ for more information.
For our January 2021 program, our two 11th grade teen volunteers, Kayla Malcolm-Joseph and Leah Allen, donated funds that they raised to purchase thirty $10 Dunkin Donuts gift cards for those in need at the Antonio Olivieri Drop-In Center. Hand written cards from the girls are included with each gift card.
The funds raised for our February 2021 program were donated to help support a pop up food pantry, supporting community members in need of food in Harlem. This effort was organized by Philoxenia. Marilenas Meals sponsored 12 bags of groceries (the equivalent of 180 meals).
We hope to resume our monthly program of making and distributing meals as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we will continue to pursue meaningful ways to safely help those in need.
We are actively looking for sponsors and other donations. Please contact May Vlachos for information on sponsorship and donations: marilenasmeals@gmail.com
