Christ is risen from the dead, by death, trampling down upon death, and to those in the tombs He has granted life.

    The reading is from Acts of the Apostles 5:12-20.

    In those days, many signs and wonders were done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high honor. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. But the high priest rose up and all who were with him, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the common prison. But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out and said, "Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life."

    The Reading is from John 20:19-31

    On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

    Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe."

    Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."

    Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

    Wisdom of the Fathers

    For though the Apostles themselves modestly ascribe it all to this cause, declaring that they did these things in the name of Christ, yet at the same time the life and noble conduct of the men helped to produce this effect. "And believers were more added unto the Lord, multitudes both of men and women." Observe, how he now no longer tells the number of them that believe; at such a rate was the faith making way even to an immense multitude, and so widely was the Resurrection proclaimed. So then "the people magnified them:" but they were now no longer lightly to be despised as once they were: for in a little moment, at a single turn of the scale, such have been the effects produced by the fisherman and by the publican! Earth was become a heaven, for manner of life, for boldness of speech, for wonders, for all besides; like Angels were they looked upon with wonder:

    Thomas Sunday

    Though the doors were shut at the dwelling where the disciples were gathered for fear of the Jews on the evening of the Sunday after the Passover, our Saviour wondrously entered and stood in their midst, and greeted them with His customary words, "Peace be unto you." Then He showed unto them His hands and feet and side; furthermore, in their presence, He took some fish and a honeycomb and ate before them, and thus assured them of His bodily Resurrection. But Thomas, who was not then present with the others, did not believe their testimony concerning Christ's Resurrection, but said in a decisive manner, "Except I shall see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into His side, I will not believe." Wherefore after eight days, that is, on this day, when the disciples were again gathered together and Thomas was with them, the Lord Jesus came while the doors were shut, as He did formerly. Standing in their midst, He said, "Peace be unto you"; then He said to Thomas, "Bring hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and bring hither thy hand, and thrust it into My side: and be not unbelieving, but believing."

    And Thomas, beholding and examining carefully the hands and side of the Master, cried out with faith, "My Lord and my God." Thus he clearly proclaimed the two natures - human and divine - of the God-man (Luke 24:36-49; John 20:19-29).

    This day is called Antipascha (meaning "in the stead of Pascha," not "in opposition to Pascha") because with this day, the first Sunday after Pascha, the Church consecrates every Sunday of the year to the commemoration of Pascha, that is, the Resurrection.

    Crescens the Martyr

    This Martyr was from Myra of Lycia, born of an illustrious family. Of his own accord he went amidst the idolaters and admonished them to leave off their futile religion and worship the only true God, Who is worshipped by the Christians; for this he was arrested. When asked by the ruler what his name and lineage were, the Saint would answer only that he was a Christian; counseled to offer sacrifice to the idols, he refused. For this, he was hung up and beaten, was scraped, and then was cast into fire, in which he gave up his holy soul into the hands of God, though not even the hair of his head was harmed by the flames.

    When the Emperor Diocletian was at Aquileia, he learned that these Saints were Christians, and had them brought before him. Because they would not deny Christ, he had them imprisoned, and when he went into Macedonia, he committed them to Dulcitius the Prefect, who, however, lost his understanding and became incapable of doing them any harm. Diocletian then gave Count Sisinius charge over them. He had Saints Agape and Chionia burned; he ordered that Saint Irene be put in a brothel, but by the providence of God this was not accomplished, and she was shot with an arrow. These holy sisters suffered martyrdom in Thessalonica in the year 295.

    Parish News & Events

    Rides to Church:  If you, or anyone you know, needs a ride to church, please call the office. We will either send a fellow parishioner to pick you up, or call a cab for you. Also, St. Nicholas is compiling a list of individuals who would be interested in picking up fellow parishioners who do not have a ride to church.  If you are interested in helping us in this very important ministry, please call the office.  It is our hope that everyone who wants to come to St. Nicholas will be able, whether they can drive or not.

    Benevolence:  Hunger is all around us, even here in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County. Many times, we are asked to distribute food and toiletries to families who are hungry and in need. Please consider bringing non perishable food items and toiletries and leaving them on the shelf in the exo-narthex.  Thank you and God Bless You.

    Project Mexico Update:  Thank you to everyone who has donated to put our faith into action.  We have raised nearly $600 per team member for the participation fee and are hopeful that your continued support will help us cover the travel costs of the team which are about $8,000 total. If you have not yet donated, checks may be made payable to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church with Project Mexico in the memo line.  Please join us on Tuesday, May 1 for dinner at the downtown Cottage Inn from 4:00 pm—8:00 pm.  A percent of sales from patrons that mention Project Mexico that evening will be donated by Cottage Inn to the team. Please contact Chris Patselas at PatselasCC@bv.com if you have any questions about Project Mexico.

    Stewardship:  TRULY CHRIST HAS RISEN!  Holy Week was a time of reflection and celebration made possible by the donation of our parishioner's time, talent and treasure. Thank You to everyone!  We now need your help.  There are still over 150 Parishioner's who have not returned their 2018 Membership Cards.  We need your ideas on how the Stewardship Committee can effectively communicate with those who have not returned their stewardship. Please join us at our monthly Stewardship Committee meeting on Wednesday, May 2 at 7:00 pm and help us with your ideas.  Without you, we will not be able to effectively carry out our Church and Ministries services.
    REMEMBER:  Our Spring General Assembly is scheduled for April 22 following Church service in our hall.  Only members in good standing can attend and vote.  Thus if you want to participate in setting our priorities for our Church and Ministries, you need to get your 2018 Membership Card/Pledge in prior to April 22.

    Spring Flower Sale!  Spring is almost here, and the Philoptochos flower sale has started!  Beautiful baskets and planters are available. The orders are due by Sunday, April 29 with delivery on Saturday, May 5 during our Women’s Expo—just in time for Mother's Day!  Order forms are on the information racks in the hallway.  Please contact Carolyn Roopas with questions at ccroopas@gmail.com or (734) 395-8216.

    Philoptochos Women’s Expo: Please mark your calendars for Saturday, May 5! The Philoptochos will present our Second Annual Women's Expo. It will take place from 10:00am to 3:00pm in our social hall.  There will be many great vendors participating and something for everyone. Again this year the proceeds will go to Creating Brighter Futures Center for Autistic children. Please tell your friends and neighbors to stop by and shop. We look forward to seeing you there!

    Book Sale: We would like to thank everyone for the donation of books.  We will display all of the books next Sunday, April. 22, following the Liturgy and will be available for purchase on this day.  If we have enough children's books, each child will be able to select 1 book at no charge.  Leftover books will be donated to AAUW.  The money raised will go to our Philoptochos Chapter Challenge for Autism.  We will collect books until the end of March. Thank you again for supporting this project.

    GREEK FESTIVAL SPONSORSHIPS: It’s time to start thinking warm weather and this year’s Ya’ssoo Festival—June 8, 9, 10.  This is an ideal way to promote your business to Ann Arbor and the surrounding communities as well as for individuals to support our festival.  Forms are available on the Ya’ssoo table in the office hallway.  Thank you!

    Kafenio:  Join us for Paximathakia baking this Friday, April 20 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm—dinner will be provided. Join us also on Saturday, April 21 from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm— breakfast and lunch will be provided. No experience is necessary and any amount of time you can spare is helpful!     Lamb Luncheon:  AHEPA Chapter 195 will sponsor their annual spring Lamb Luncheon on Sunday, April 29.  An exceptional meal featuring lamb shank, potatoes, green beans and a salad is available for a donation of $15 for adults and $11 for children 12 and under.  Proceeds will benefit AHEPA philanthropic initiatives including our high school senior scholarship program.   Take out is available for anyone who is interested.  Please contact Costas Boutsikakis for tickets.

    Guidelines for receiving Holy Communion

    GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION

    For Orthodox Christians:

    When preparing to receive Holy Communion, please remain quietly in your pews until an Usher directs you to approach from the center aisle.  Your prayerful attention helps sustain the solemnity of the Divine Liturgy for those praying the “Prayers of Preparation” and following Holy Communion the “Prayers of Thanksgiving.”  

    For Non-Orthodox Christians:

    We welcome to our worship those Christians not fully united with us (canonically).  It is a consequence of the sad divisions of Christianity that we cannot extend a general invitation to receive Holy Communion.  Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the celebrating community signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship.  Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray.

    Please fill out the form on the notepads in the pews and put it in our collection tray so we may welcome you to our Parish.  You are welcome to join us in the Social Hall for our Fellowship Hour following the Divine Liturgy. Please note, Holy Communion is reserved for prepared Orthodox Christians. Visitors are welcome to receive the Antidoro (Blessed Bread), which is distributed at the end of the Divine Liturgy.
