HOLY COMMUNION NOTICE:

While everyone is welcome to worship with us, Holy Communion is reserved for those who have been Baptized and/or Confirmed in the Eastern Orthodox Faith and have prepared through prayer, fasting and recent confession.

 

All Guest and Newcomers are welcome to come forward at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy to receive the Antidoron, which is bread that has been blessed.

 

STEWARDSHIP, OFFERINGS AND ATTENDANCE 

Bringing our stewardship offerings to the house of God is part of our worship of God. Our stewardship also supports our efforts to proclaim the fullness of the Gospel of Christ in Fort Worth, Texas through our ministries and outreach. Checks should be made out to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, designated in the memo for Stewardship (use your stewardship envelope), and placed in the basket. Offerings for the poor and those in need (alms) should be designated in the memo for Altar Fund. (Altar Fund is the clergy discretionary fund to help those in need.)

Attendance to Sunday and Weekday Divine Liturgies and other Divine Services are important for our spiritual growth and relationship with Christ as Orthodox Christians.

The worship experience is enhanced by having your children participate. Please help them learn proper behavior and reverence while in the Church. Teach them to cross themselves, venerate the Icons, & respond prayerfully “Lord have mercy.” If they become too loud, please take them to the Narthex/Quiet Room for a brief stay and return as soon as they have calmed. More Church etiquette.

The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 15:1-11.

Brethren, I would remind you in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, by which you are saved, if you hold it fast -- unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments." He said to him, "Which?" And Jesus said, "You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and You shall love your neighbor as yourself." The young man said to him, "All these I have observed; what do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." Wisdom of the Fathers

Rise from love of the world and love of pleasure. Put care aside, strip your mind, refuse your body. Prayer, after all, is a turning away from the world, visible and invisible. What have I in heaven? Nothing except simply to cling always to You in undistracted prayer. Wealth pleases some, glory others, possessions others, but what I want is to cling to God and to put the hopes of my dispassion in Him (cf. Ps. 72:25, 28).

Babylas the Holy Martyr

Saint Babylas was the twelfth Bishop of Antioch, being the successor of Zebinus (or Zebinas); he was beheaded during the reign of Decius, in the year 250, and at his own request was buried in the chains with which he was bound. The Emperor Gallus (reigned 351-354) built a church in his honour at Daphne, a suburb of Antioch, to put an end to the demonic oracles at the nearby temple of Apollo. When Julian the Apostate came in 362 to consult the oracle about his campaign against the Persians, the oracle (that is, the demon within it) remained dumb until at last, answering Julian's many sacrifices and supplications, it told him, "The dead prevent me from speaking." It told Julian to dig up the bones and move them. Julian, then, in the words of Saint John Chrysostom, "leaving all the other dead, moved only that Martyr." He commanded the Christians to take away Saint Babylas' bones, which they did with great solemnity and triumph. When this had been done, a thunderbolt fell from heaven destroying with fire the shrine of Apollo, which Julian did not dare rebuild. Saint John Chrysostom preached a sermon on this within a generation after.

According to the opinion of many Fathers of the Church, based on an ancient tradition, this is the Zacharias whom, as our Lord said, the Jews slew between the temple and the altar (Matt. 23:35), first, because even after the Virgin Mary gave birth, he continued to refer to her as virgin and number her among the virgins; second, because Zacharias' son John was not found during the slaughter of the Innocents, since the elderly Elizabeth had taken him and carefully hid him while he was yet an infant, in an unnamed place somewhere in the desert, where, according to the Evangelist, "the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel" (Luke 1:80). When the child was not found, his father was slain by Herod's command.

The Miracle at Colassai of Archangel Michael

The feast today in honour of the Archangel Michael commemorates the great miracle he wrought when he delivered from destruction a church and holy spring named for him. The pagans, moved by malice, sought to destroy the aforesaid church and holy spring by turning the course of two rivers against them. But the Archangel appeared and, by means of the Cross and a great earthquake that shook the entire area, diverted the waters into an underground course. Henceforth, the name of that place changed from Colossae to Chonae, which means "funnels" in Greek.

Sozon the Martyr

This holy Martyr was a shepherd in Lycaonia. Born a pagan, named Tarasius, he received holy Baptism and was renamed Sozon. Filled with zeal for the truth, he taught his countrymen to desist from the worship of idols. Once he entered the temple of Artemis in Pompeiopolis of Cilicia, cut off the golden hand of the idol, and breaking it in pieces, distributed it among the poor. When he saw that many were being unjustly punished for the theft, of his own accord he gave himself up to Maximian the Governor. He was beaten with rods until his bones were broken. According to some, he suffered martyrdom in 288; according to others, in 304.

The Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary

According to the ancient tradition of the Church, the Theotokos was born of barren and aged parents, Joachim and Anna, about the year 16 or 17 before the birth of Christ. Joachim was descended from the royal line of David, of the tribe of Judah. Anna was of the priestly tribe of Levi, a daughter of the priest Matthan and Mary, his wife.

Menodora, Metrodora, & Nymphodora the Martyrs

These Martyrs, sisters according to the flesh, were from Bithynia. They lived in virginity on a mountain near the Pythian hot springs of Bithynia, devoting themselves to asceticism and prayer. Betrayed to the local governor, Fronto, they were subjected to frightful tortures, and so gave up their holy souls into the hands of God. They contested for the Faith during the reign of Maximian, in the year 304.

Theodora the Martyr of Alexandria

This saint lived in the fifth century. Out of remorse for the adultery that she committed with another man, she fled from her husband's house, renamed herself Theodore, clothed herself as a man, and pretending to be a eunuch, entered a monastery of men. Her identity as a woman was discovered only after her death.

Our Mission: To promote charitable, benevolent and philanthropic outreach; to preserve the sanctity of life and family; and to perpetuate and promote our Orthodox faith and traditions.

 

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This past July I attended the National Philoptochos Conveention in conjunction with Clergy/Laity in NYC. This was a memorable conference as we celebrated 90 years of Philoptochos, 90 years of wonderful philanthropic work. We are an organization of giving and serving, and that serving needs to continue, hopefully for another 90 years. 
One of the main goals at the convention was to provide chapters with innovative ways to increase their membership, specifically getting our younger parishioners involved. A presentation was done by Sara Sladek, called “A Path for Membership Growth”. Sara presented the chapters with many ideas to assist in bringing in our next generation of Philoptochos. The challenge now is to implement those ideas within our chapters. Father Nick has always stated that to be a member of Philoptochos, you don't need to be a certain age, you only need a servant's heart.
That being said our first meeting of the Ecclesiastical year is scheduled for Sunday, September 11, after coffee hour in the parish council room. I am excited to be presenting a report on the convention and sharing some ideas to assist our chapter in growing. And we will have a fun door prize! Hope to see you all there.

Health Ministry

St. Demetrios Health Ministries’ goal is to elevate the health of the members of St. Demetrios. The Health Ministry will provide health education that focuses on the whole person - body, mind, and spirit. By building upon our relationship with Texas Health Resources, the Health Ministry will help you establish and achieve your health goals.
 
Our initial focus is the physical health of our members and as we expand the ministry for outreach, we will minister to our neighbors on the North Side.

Meals on Wheels

Because serving the Lord, by serving our neighbors is what we do!

St. Demetrios is the Northside Meals on Wheels Distribution Center, delivering over 100 meals a day, 5 days a week.

Stewardship Ministry

Importance of Stewardship

According to scripture, God created Earth for mankind and we are now stewards of His creation. This means it is our responsibility to look after and take care of this world. We should accept this responsibility and appreciate God's gift of creation for being our home. Our stewardship of creation involves the caretaking of the environment and animals as well as our families and communities. Being a good steward in this world is one way of expressing our love for God and our gratitude to Him.

Near the end of September Parish Council and all of our members will be invited to make a commitment to serving and supporting St. Demetrios and our Ministries by submitting you 2023 Stewardship Pledge


Safety Ministry

The Safety Ministry mission is to promote the safety of the St. Demetrios parish, guests, and campus.

Safety Events:The Safety Ministry is the on-site first responder team. In an emergency please contact a Safety Team Member (identified by the Safety badges or uniform) and follow Safety Team Member’s instructions.

If you have a passion for Health and Safety, speak with a Safety Team member about how you can volunteer.

The Presbyterian Night Shelter is located at
2320 Poplar St. Fort Worth, TX 76113, 817-632-7408, website: http://www.journeyhome.org/
 
The team will meet at the shelter at 5:10 p.m.
 
We volunteer the First Saturday of the Month at 5:30pm         
to park (use gated parking lot on N. Kentucky Ave—one street over) and get signed in.
We should be ready to serve families by 5:20 p.m.

    Proskomidia list

    Proskomidia list

    Submit the names of loved ones to be commemorated during the service of proskomidia (the preparation of the Bread and the Wine). Proskomidia is the service of preparation of the Bread and Wine for Holy Communion. The Faithful will submit the Orthodox Names of the living and those in repose, for health and forgiveness of sins, and for repose and resurrection. Names submitted on Sunday will be commemorated in the following Divine Liturgy.
