A WALK THROUGH HOLY WEEK

Let's walk through Holy Week using the path of the Synaxarion. The Synaxarion is the list of the saints and commemorations of every day of the year as found in the liturgical books of the Church. Each day of Holy Week has a unique commemoration that relates to the last days of the earthly ministry of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

On Palm Sunday we celebrate the final and triumphant entry of Jesus Christ, the King of Israel, into Jerusalem. He entered in humility on the colt of a donkey, as the crowd lay in his path palm branches and cloaks off their backs, singing praises of “Hosanna, praise God in the highest.”

On Holy Monday we commemorate the blessed and noble Joseph, the son of Jacob, who was betrayed by his brothers and sold into slavery. After much suffering, there was a triumph for him in Egypt. Therefore, his life is understood as a prophetic prototype (typos) of Jesus Christ (see Genesis chs. 37-42). 

On Holy Tuesday we commemorate the parable of the Ten Virgins (Matt. 25:1-13) and learn to keep a vigilant watch for the coming of the Lord. We also recall the cursing and withering of the fruitless fig tree. 

On Holy Wednesday, the Holy Fathers ordained that commemoration should be made of the anointing of the Lord with myrrh by the woman, who was a sinner; for this occurred shortly before the Passion of the Savior and He said is in preparation for His burial (Matt. 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42). Because of this anointing, we also receive an anointing with the sacrament of Holy Unction. This is the sacrament of healing. Its purpose is to grant us physical and spiritual strength, health and well-being. Like all sacraments, it is a visible sign of the invisible grace of God.

On Holy and Great Thursday morning in the Divine Liturgy we remember the Passover (Pascha) meal in the upper room shared by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with His blessed Disciples, in which He instituted the mystery of Holy Communion (Matt. 26:26-30; Mark 14:22-26; Luke 22:14-20; 1 Cor. 11:23-25).

On Holy Thursday evening, we commemorate His prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane and return to Jerusalem to participate in the events of our Lord’s betrayal by the loathsome Judas Iscariot, His seizure in the Garden of Gethsemane by the guards of the Temple, the trials before the Jewish Sanhedrin (ruling council) and by Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor, and the agony of the road to Golgotha; the saving and awesome Passion of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ; the spitting, the scourging, the whipping, the scorn, the mocking, the purple robe, the reed, the sponge, the vinegar, the nails, the spear, and above all, the cross and death, which He willingly suffered for us.  We also remember the confession unto salvation of the penitent thief, who was crucified with Him.

Good Friday—this is the day of our Lord’s death on the cross. It is the strictest of fast days and a day of mourning. The Descent from the Cross Vespers (Αποκατήλοσις) is sung in the afternoon. The priest re-enacts the removal of the body of Jesus from the cross, wraps it in a shroud and places it in the sanctuary, behind the altar, symbolic of the tomb of Christ. In the evening we sing the Lamentations, which are funeral dirges for the Lord.

On Holy and Great Saturday we commemorate the burial of the holy body of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ, and His descent into Hades, through which he liberated and granted eternal life to all those righteous individuals held by the bonds of death. For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as the “first resurrection” (Πρότη Ανάσταση).

On the holy and great Sunday of Pascha we celebrate the life-giving resurrection of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ! To Him be glory and dominion to the ages of ages. Amen.

PASCHA POT LUCK BREAKFAST

What is breakfast literally? To break the fast! Following the Paschal Divine Liturgy in the wee hours of the morning, let's all join in a pot luck Paschal meal. Tsoureki and wine will be provided for each table. Bring a dish, drop it off in the hall prior to service, or an item from your basket that you would like to share. Father will obviously share a red egg with you.

CAMP GOOD SHEPHERD - VIRGINIA 2023 REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!

 
When? Sunday, July 9th - Saturday, July 15th
 
Where? CGS - VA takes place at Camp Piankatank (1586 Stampers Bay Rd, Hartfield, VA 23071) about 30 minutes north of Glouster point on the middle peninsula, or about 1.5 hours from Annunciation, Norfolk or 1.5 hours from Sts. Constantine and Helen Cathedral in Richmond. The camp is a stunning property located right along the Piankatank River. 
 
Ages? Completed 5th grade/11 years old through 12th grade
 
Who? Camp is for kids who have completed 5th grade through 12th grade. Campers will be placed in cabins with trained and certified counselors, with campers of their own age and gender.
 
Do you need to be from Virginia? Of course not! That just happens to be our name and where we are based!
 
Cost per camper? $450 for families sending one camper, $425 for families sending two campers and $400 for families sending three or more campers. If you are a family sending multiple campers, please email cgsvirginia@gmail.com before you start to register, with the names of your campers so we can send you the coupons for the discounted price. 
 
Camping? Well, more like "glamping" (glamour camping). The children stay in air-conditioned cabins according to gender/age. They are supervised by a staff of well trained and loving young adult orthodox Christians. There is a nurse on staff as well as a number of local clergy from the Virginia area. Campers eat cafeteria style 3 times a day all together as well as additional snacks. No one goes hungry. 
 
How do we register? Please use the link below to register your camper(s). Deadline for registration is Friday, July 1st at 6:00pm, however, we are anticipating many registrations this year, so register soon to ensure your camper(s) have a spot! You will need to log into a Google account to register, you will also need pictures or PDFs of immunization records and insurance card to complete the form so have those handy.

Comedy Dinner Show

The Philoptochos of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral is hosting a Comedy Dinner Show featuring Greek-American comedian Ellen Karris. The dinner will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Annunciation Cathedral Hellenic Center, 7220 Grandby Street in Norfolk. The event is a fundraiser for philanthropic projects. Tickets are $50 per person and will be pre-sale only. Seating is limited. Join Father Milton and Presbytera Connie who will be attending. To reserve your ticket, call 757-440-0500.


PRISON MINISTRY PRAYER BREAKFAST

Saturday, June 29th, 9 - 11 a.m. This Prayer Breakfast is a free event but it is also a fund-raiser for the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry. Funds collected will be used to pay Chaplain Howe’s salary and to purchase Bible study materials for the inmates at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail in Williamsburg.

Anyone wishing to support this fund raiser should contact Tom Coghill so that he can let the event host know how many folks to expect for breakfast.

In the first book, O Theophilos, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me, for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom of lsrael?" Great and Holy Pascha
The Reading is from John 1:1-17

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light.

The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. (John bore witness to him, and cried, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.'") And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Great and Holy Pascha

Mary Magdalene, and the other women who were present at the burial of our Saviour on Friday evening, returned from Golgotha to the city and prepared fragrant spices and myrrh, so that they might anoint the body of Jesus. On the morrow, because of the law which forbids work on the day of the Sabbath, they rested for the whole day. But at early dawn on the Sunday that followed, almost thirty-six hours since the death of the Life-giving Redeemer, they came to the sepulchre with the spices to anoint His body. While they were considering the difficulty of rolling away the stone from the door of the sepulchre, there was a fearful earthquake; and an Angel, whose countenance shone like lightning and whose garment was white as snow, rolled away the stone and sat upon it. The guards that were there became as dead from fear and took to flight. The women, however, went into the sepulchre, but did not find the Lord's body. Instead, they saw two other Angels in the form of youths clothed in white, who told them that the Saviour was risen, and they sent forth the women, who ran to proclaim to the disciples these gladsome tidings. Then Peter and John arrived, having learned from Mary Magdalene what had come to pass, and when they entered the tomb, they found only the winding sheets. Therefore, they returned again to the city with joy, as heralds now of the supernatural Resurrection of Christ, Who in truth was seen alive by the disciples on this day on five occasions.

Our Lord, then, was crucified, died, and was buried on Friday, before the setting of the sun, which was the first of His "three days" in the grave; observing the mystical Sabbath, that "seventh day" in which it is said that the Lord "rested from all His works" (Gen. 2:2-3), He passed all of Saturday in the grave; and He arose "while it was yet dark, very early in the morning" on Sunday, the third day, which, according to the Hebrew reckoning, began after sunset on Saturday.

As we celebrate today this joyous Resurrection, we greet and embrace one another in Christ, thereby demonstrating our Saviour's victory over death and corruption, and the destruction of our ancient enmity with God, and His reconciliation toward us, and our inheritance of life everlasting. The feast itself is called Pascha, which is derived from the Hebrew word which means "passover"; because Christ, Who suffered and arose, has made us to pass over from the curse of Adam and slavery to the devil and death unto our primal freedom and blessedness. In addition, this day of this particular week, which is the first of all the rest, is dedicated to the honour of the Lord; in honour and remembrance of the Resurrection, the Apostles transferred to this day the rest from labour that was formerly assigned to the Sabbath of the ancient Law.

Agape, Chionia, and Irene, the Holy Martyrs

When the Emperor Diocletian was at Aquileia, he learned that these Saints were Christians, and had them brought before him. Because they would not deny Christ, he had them imprisoned, and when he went into Macedonia, he committed them to Dulcitius the Prefect, who, however, lost his understanding and became incapable of doing them any harm. Diocletian then gave Count Sisinius charge over them. He had Saints Agape and Chionia burned; he ordered that Saint Irene be put in a brothel, but by the providence of God this was not accomplished, and she was shot with an arrow. These holy sisters suffered martyrdom in Thessalonica in the year 295.

Wisdom of the Fathers

...all knowledge, strength and virtue are the grace of God, as are all other things. And through grace He has given all men the power to become sons of God (cf. John 1:12) by keeping the divine commandments. Or, rather, these commandments keep us, and are the grace of God, since without His grace we cannot keep them. We have nothing to offer Him except our faith, our resolution and, in brief, all the true dogmas that we hold with firm faith through the teaching we have heard (cf. Rom. 10:17).

...'the light' already 'shines in the darkness' (Jn. 1:5), both by day and by night, both within and without - within in our hearts (II Cor. 6:16), without in our minds. It shines on us without evening, without change, without alteration, without form. It speaks, works, lives, gives life, and changes into light those whom it illuminates. We bear witness that 'God is light' (I Jn. 1:5) and those to whom it has been granted to see Him have all beheld Him as light, because the light of His glory goes before Him, and it is impossible for Him to appear without light. Those who have not seen His light have not seen Him, for He is the Light, and those who have not received the Light have not yet received grace. Those who have received grace have received the Light of God and have received God, even as Christ Himself, who is the Light, has said, 'I will live in them and move among them' (II Cor. 6:16).
