From our Pastoral Assistant Stavros

Excerpt from the book “Life - Miracles - Prophecies of Saint Seraphim of Viritsa, the New Saint of Orthodox Russian Church, 1866-1949”. . .

“The clairvoyant Elder (Saint Seraphim of Viritsa) of the St. Alexander (Nevsky) Lavra quickly became known among the Christians of Petersburg. Father Seraphim usually liturgized at the Lavra cathedral chapel of the Holy Protection. Every day, he confessed the people. The people who wished to discuss with him always waited for him. He received the visitors in his cell. When there were many visitors, or when Father Seraphim was sick, they wrote their problems on papers and sent them to the Elder through his helpers and always received his answers. One woman who frequently visited the elder said that many times when she would come to see the elder, she could not approach him because of the people who awaited him. However, the elder, always on his own, called her without seeing her.

In 1927 Archbishop Alexius Simanski visited Father Seraphim to seek his advice. The Archbishop’s friends suggested that he go abroad. They were ready to help him to save the archbishop from certain imprisonment and probably from execution as well. Before the archbishop even asked his question, the elder Father Seraphim told him:

“Many people today would want to go abroad. But to whom shall they leave Russia? Do not fear anything, Your Eminence. Russia needs you. You will become patriarch and for 25 years you will be at the head of the church. After patriarch Tikhon, we will not have a patriarch for many years. Metropolitan Sergius will not be patriarch even one year and after him, you will be a patriarch. A war will occur, a dreadful war, a World War. This war will make our people return to God. The same people who now have authority in their hands and are closing the churches will then be opening them.”

Many people would come to Father Seraphim for confession. Every day for many hours Father Seraphim confessed the people. From this confession, his feet began hurting. Once, he confessed people for two days and nights straight. The Saint Alexander Lavra and its Elder were a great consolation for the faithful Christians in those years. .. The Elder’s spiritual gifts and his gift of consoling people made him known even beyond the city of Saint Peter. People from all parts of Russia would come to the Lavra to receive his blessing, to be consoled, and to seek his advice. Father Seraphim would say the following about his own self:  “I am the storage room where people’s afflictions gather.”

The years were difficult and Passion week came for Saint Alexander Lavra. In one night almost all the Lavra’s monks were captured. Some were exiled, and others were imprisoned in concentration camps. Many had a martyr end. Most of the Lavra monks were sent to Solovki concentration camp.

In 1933 Father Seraphim went to the little city of Viritsa and remained there. They say that a spiritual child of his, a general, helped him to go to Viritsa. The doctors found in Father Seraphim many illnesses, and it seemed that soon the Elder would die. For this reason the authorities left him free and allowed him to stay in Viritsa.

Here in Viritsa all the Elder’s spiritual gifts were fully revealed: his clairvoyance, the grace of prayer, and miracle working.”

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Tone. Psalm 149.5,1.
The saints shall rejoice in glory.
Verse: Sing to the Lord a new song.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 5:22-26; 6:1-2.

Brethren, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us have no self-conceit, no provoking of one another, no envy of one another. Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Look to yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Verse:

Gospel Reading

10th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 13:10-17

At that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity." And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the sabbath day." Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

10th Sunday of Luke

10th Sunday of Luke

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Tone

Thou didst abolish death by Thy Cross; Thou didst open Paradise to the thief; Thou didst transform the myrrh-bearers' lamentation, and didst bid Thine Apostles to preach that Thou art risen, O Christ God, granting great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Sabbas the Sanctified in the Plagal Fourth Tone

With the streams of thy tears, thou didst cultivate the barrenness of the desert; and by thy sighings from the depths, thou didst bear fruit a hundredfold in labours; and thou becamest a luminary, shining with miracles upon the world, O Savas our righteous Father. Intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Third Tone

On this day the Virgin cometh to the cave to give birth to * God the Word ineffably, * Who was before all the ages. * Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing * the gladsome tidings; * with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him * Who is willing to be gazed on * as a young Child Who * before the ages is God.
