From our Pastoral Assistant Stavros

Excerpt from the book “Life - Miracles - Prophecies of Saint Seraphim of Viritsa, the New Saint of Orthodox Russian Church, 1866-1949”. . .

“The war had not yet finished and the elder was thinking of what life would be after the war and he gave various counsels to people how to better arrange their lives after the war. He said that things would change, that churches and monasteries would be open, and faith would be rekindled in the hearts of people.

In 1945, nun Seraphima who once was Basil’s wife, reposed in the Lord. This nun Seraphima, was near the elder and helped him all the years he was in Vinitsa. They buried her next to the Church of the all Holy Virgin Mary of Kazan and the elder then said:  “I will also be here with her.”

The war ended. Every day very many people visited the elder at this home in Vinitsa. Father Seraphim was then very weak. For this reason he received the people lying down on his bed.

Not only the inhabitants of Viritsa visited him but also the people from the surrounding area, even from Leningrad, bringing to him their pain and their afflictions. The Elder received everyone. Every day one could see outside his home, people who awaited their turn to speak with the Elder.

Most people asked about their relatives missing in action. Then the Elder, to whom God revealed what was the fate of these people, used to say:  “Pray for health”, or “for repose you must pray”. To one woman who made such a question to him, Father Seraphim said:  “From where can I know with what train he will come? Now in Leningrad, he is embarking on the train. I don’t precisely know with which one he will come with this or or with the next one.” Truly at that moment the woman’s son was entering the train to go to his home in Viritsa.

Once one of the Elder’s spiritual children, a woman, visited the Elder and asked him about her husband from whom she did not have any news for a long time:  “Your own little Nicholas will return home in a bit, but his little head will be hurting very much.” Truly Nicholas returned but had a serious wound on his head.

A woman, named Lyubov (Love), says the following:  “Towards the end of the war, I learned that my husband was killed. I did not want to believe this. I had two children and it would be very difficult in that post war time for me to raise them on my own. So, I did not believe, that I remained alone; I thought that a mistake took place and that my husband would return. In 1947 together with an acquaintance of mine - whose husband was missing in action, - we went to Father Seraphim. First my friend asked him:  ‘Dear Father, my husband was killed and I’m thinking of getting married a second time.’ Father Seraphim threateningly moved his finger and smilingly, said, ‘Don’t think of it. Your own one is alive and when he returns, you might have problems.’ Then the Elder returned to me and told me to sit closer. Without asking me anything he told me:  ‘You don’t believe, and nevertheless, your husband died. You must marry again. Why shouldn’t you get married, since a good man is interested in you?”

The Elder to his own spiritual children used to say that they should build hostels in Viritsa, in other words, homes for people, who visited him. Usually they began without having either money or materials, but with the Elder’s blessing everything would be found. Truly they built such homes where the Elder began sending his visitors to stay at night.

After the war, there was in all the land a great housing problem. For many years people searched for a home and couldn’t find any. Many came to Father Seraphim with tears in their eyes and sought help. Father Seraphim blessed them, giving them courage and after a little while, the people would find housing.

One day a woman visited the Elder. During the whole time of the war she was in the front line and fought. When she returned, she couldn’t find a house to stay and a job to make ends meet. “These unimportant things we should not think too much about,” the Elder told her. “You will have them all; just don’t forget God.” Truly in a but, she found both work and a home."

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Grave Tone. Psalm 149.5,1.
The saints shall rejoice in glory.
Verse: Sing to the Lord a new song.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 5:8-19.

Brethren, walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is a shame even to speak of the things that they do in secret; but when anything is exposed by the light it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it is said, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light." Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart.

Grave Tone.

Grave Tone.

Verse:

Gospel Reading

11th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 14:16-24

The Lord said this parable: "A man once gave a great banquet, and invited many; and at the time of the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for all is now ready.' But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I go out and see it; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I must go to examine them; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' So the servant came and reported this to his master. Then the householder in anger said to his servant, 'Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.' And the servant said, 'Sir, what you commanded has been done, and there is still room.' And the master said to the servant, 'Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet. For many are called, but few are chosen.'"

11th Sunday of Luke

11th Sunday of Luke

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Fourth Tone

From on high didst Thou descend, O Compassionate One; to burial of three days hast Thou submitted that Thou mightest free us from our passions. O our Life and Resurrection, Lord, glory be to Thee.

Apolytikion for 11th Sun. of Luke in the Second Tone

By faith didst Thou justify the Forefathers, when through them Thou didst betroth Thyself aforetime to the Church from among the nations. The Saints boast in glory that from their seed there is a glorious fruit, even she that bare Thee seedlessly. By their prayers, O Christ God, save our souls.

Apolytikion for Spyridon the Wonderworker in the First Tone

Thou wast shown forth as a champion of the First Council and a wonderworker, O Spyridon, our God-bearing Father. Wherefore, thou didst speak unto one dead in the grave, and didst change a serpent to gold. And while chanting thy holy prayers, thou hadst Angels serving with thee, O most sacred one. Glory to Him that hath glorified thee. Glory to Him that hath crowned thee. Glory to Him that worketh healings for all through thee.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Third Tone

On this day the Virgin cometh to the cave to give birth to * God the Word ineffably, * Who was before all the ages. * Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing * the gladsome tidings; * with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him * Who is willing to be gazed on * as a young Child Who * before the ages is God.
