Parish Council Elections:
The nominated candidates will be announced at the Parish Assembly. All candidates are required to attend a Parish Council Seminar on Tuesday, November 19th at 8:00pm. Please note that elections for the Parish Council will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2019 following Church services until 2:00pm. Only Stewards in good standing for the year 2019 are eligible to vote in the election. If you have any questions about the election process, do not hesitate to call the Church office.
Metropolis of NJ Christmas Benefit Concert:
The Metropolis of New Jersey is hosting a Christmas Benefit concert on Saturday, December 7th, at St. John’s Cathedral in Tenafly at 6:00pm. Handel’s “The Messiah” and other Christmas songs and carols will be performed. Tickets are $50 each and our St. Paraskevi Philoptochos will be coordinating the ticket sales for our community along with our church office. Please contact the church office or see Lisa Marcopulos if you are interested in purchasing a ticket.
St. Paraskevi Philoptochos & Sunday School Food Collection & Coat Drive:
As we count our blessings this season, we are encouraging our families to bring non-perishable food items in, not only the next few Sundays, but all year long. St. Peter's Haven is having a Thanksgiving food drive. They are looking for potatoes or sweet potatoes (canned or boxes) stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, canned vegetables and boxed cake mix. Last year, St. Peter's Haven helped over 300 families in the Clifton area with their Thanksgiving meal. Also, Saint Peter’s Haven is asking for donations of new and gently used coats and jackets for adults and children. If you have any outerwear that you’ve replaced or your children have outgrown, please consider donating them. We will have a collection box outside the back door to the church office for both the food items and the coats. We will be collecting until Sunday, November 24th.
****We are grateful to our St. George community for their participation in our collection drives for charity. However, we would appreciate our community being mindful of the items we are collecting and the timeline for the collection. Most of the organizations we collect for do not have storage space for donated items, and so they have very clear collection seasons for everything. If you have items that are gently used, and no longer need, and we are not currently collecting, please consider calling Salvation Army, Vietnam Veterans of America or Good Will to pick up your donation. We are proud of our St. George community for their philanthropy, but we also want to be mindful of the appearance of our church.
New Year’s Eve Party:
Ring in the New Year with fabulous food and entertainment right here at St. George! Please support our efforts and join us at our annual New Year’s Eve party which will take place on Tuesday, December 31st from 9pm–1am. Music and entertainment by DJ Yorgo. Appetizers, Dinner, BYOB and raffle prizes! Reservations and payment in advance by December 22nd: $65 for adults and $35 for children 18 and under. After December 22nd: Adults $75.00 and $45 for children 18 and under. Doors open at 8:30pm. For more information contact the church office at office@stgeorgeclifton.org or Morfia Sokolic at msokolic@verizon.net. We promise a memorable evening so gather your friends and family and come ring in the New Year with the St. George community!
Security System and Office Computer Upgrades:
We are kindly asking for donations from our community that will be used to install a Door Access Control System on the church doors and for three new office computers. The cost for these projects is $10,000. A new fob security system will be installed on the front glass doors, the metal doors by the downstairs kitchen, the glass doors in the gym and the rear metal gym doors. The church office will also have a remote button to unlock the doors to allow visitors to enter. All this will greatly enhance the security of our building. Additionally, the computers in the church office are 8 years old and no longer efficient and this is interfering with the productivity of the church office, the office of the Treasurer and our ministries. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Please contact the church office for more information. We have a long way to go but we are very grateful to the following for their generous donations thus far:
Mr. Evan Zaros, Ms. Dina Papadakos, The Orthodox Life Institute, Mrs. Linda Chelius,
Mr. & Mrs. Nick & Lisa Marcopulos, Mr. & Mrs. Ross & Antionette Halkias,
Mrs. Morfia Sokolic, Mr. Evan Zaros, Mr. & Mrs. Emanuel & Maria Karras,
Dr. Peter Salierno, Mr. & Mrs. Sam & Maria Arvanites
Kali Parea & Senior Citizen Luncheon:
We thank everyone who joined the Kali Parea on their trip to St. Nektarios Monastery in Roscoe, NY. We also thank Mrs. Tina Stames for organizing the trip and Senior Citizen lunch. Everyone enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship with tasty food that was generously donated by Townsquare Diner in Wharton, NJ.
Maids of Athena:
Please support our Maids of Athena, Hara Chapter #240 with their Apple Pie Fundraiser. Order some pies for the upcoming holidays. Look for their table during fellowship hour to pre-order your pies. The pick-up date is Sunday, November 24th.
Stewardship 2019:
Thank you to all of our Stewards who have made their pledges and donations so far for 2019. Our Saint George parish depends upon your generous donations to envision our goals and enhance our ministries and outreach. So please don’t forget to submit your 2019 Stewardship Pledge card. We currently have 277 stewards and we are hoping to reach our goal of 350 stewards for 2019! Pledge cards can be found in the Narthex, Atrium or Church office.
Spending Time with God
As Christians it is also important to value the time we spend at church, in worship, service and activities. Every member of the Body of Christ plays a role, according to their gifts, in the life of the local church. The church is not a social club, but rather a place where people of faith gather for worship, fellowship and service. Most importantly, we gather together in worship, praising and thanking God for the blessings in our lives and hearing His Word. Of the 168 hours in every week with which we have been blessed, we offer back the short time we spend in church on Sunday morning and other services, gathered together as the Body of Christ. We are united in prayer and united in Holy Communion. We become His hands and feet carrying out His work in the world. As we offer ourselves and our time as His Church, we are part of something much bigger than we can imagine – much bigger than the project we support, the service we provide, the prayer we offer.
Saint Gregory was born in Neocaesarea of Pontus to parents who were not Christians. He studied in Athens, in Alexandria, in Beirut, and finally for five years in Caesarea of Palestine under Origen, by whom he was also instructed in the Faith of Christ. Then, in the year 240, he became bishop of his own city, wherein he found only seventeen Christians. By the time the Saint reposed about the year 265, there were only seventeen unbelievers left there. Virtually the whole duration of his episcopacy was a time of continual, marvellous wonders worked by him. Because of this, he received the surname "Wonderworker"; even the enemies of the truth called him a second Moses (see Saint Basil the Great's On the Holy Spirit, ch. 29).
According to the tradition of the Church, the Theotokos was brought to the Temple at three years of age, where she was consecrated to God and spent her days until she was fourteen or fifteen years old; and then, as a mature maiden, by the common counsel of the priests (since her parents had reposed some three years before), she was betrothed to Joseph.

Eleventh Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from John 21:14-25
At that time, Jesus revealed himself to his disciples after he was raised from the dead, and he said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." A second time he said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go." (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, "Follow me."
Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?" When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this man?" Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!" So, the word went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die; but Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?" This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.
Eleventh Orthros Gospel
Prokeimenon. Plagal First Mode. Psalm 11.7,1.
You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us.
Verse: Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed.
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18.
Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.
Plagal First Mode.
9th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 12:16-21
The Lord said this parable: "The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." As he said these things, he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
9th Sunday of Luke
