Sunday Sermon:

Please note, that going forward, the sermon will be delivered right after the Gospel reading which means at about 10:00AM. The Divine Liturgy, as you know, begins at 9:30AM and this is the time when all the faithful are called to be in Church. It is an appointment with the most Holy One, will you keep it? Put your best effort forward!

Holy Communion Line:

We remind everyone that the Communion line is to be formed in the center aisle, and once you receive, depart to the right or to the left to return to your seat. Sunday School children and their teachers will come up first. Infants may be brought up to the front of the line at any time. Please remain at your seat, (you may sit if you need to), and enter the center aisle once the Parish Council members indicate that it is time for people in your pew to come up. While you are waiting, you may read the prayers for before Holy Communion on page 76. Once you return to your seat read the thanksgiving prayers for after Holy Communion on page 90. This is one of the most sacred moments of the service, so please treat it accordingly, refrain from talking and be respectful and prayerful. Also, please wipe any excess lipstick from your lips before coming to the Holy Chalice and no chewing gum during services. Thank you.

St. Paraskevi Philoptochos:

Will host their annual Lenten Fasolatha luncheon today after Liturgy. As in the past, we ask for a free will donation that you feel is appropriate. All proceeds will benefit the seminarians at Hellenic College/Holy Cross Seminary.

Greek Independence Day Parade Bus:

St. George will be booking a bus, pending interest, to go to the Greek Independence Day Parade on Sunday, April 14, 2024. There are 50 seats available and the cost for the bus is $25 per adult. FREE for children 17 and under who are accompanied by a paid adult. Beautiful weather is forecasted so make your reservations by contacting the church office. However, seats will only be guaranteed when payment is received. The bus will depart from St. George at 12 noon and leave from NYC at approximately 4:00pm. Thank you for your cooperation.

Wednesday, April 10^th at 10:00AM – Following the morning Pre-Sanctified Liturgy, Rev. Protopresbyter Father Panagiotis Lekkas of Kimisis tis Theotokou will be speaking in Greek at the luncheon. The topic will be “Finding the Love of God through the Lenten Services of Holy Week.

Wednesday, April 17^th at 6:30PM – Following the Pre-Sanctified Liturgy, speaker Agapios Kyritsis, from St. Demetrios in Perth Amboy, will be presenting “Finding the Joys of Heaven at Your Home Parish” and it will be based on practicing our faith through the liturgical schedule and other activities at your local parish.

Wednesday, April 24^th at 6:30PM – Speaker Peter Tarhanidis, from Holy Trinity in Westfield, will be presenting “Finding the Joys of Heaven at Home”, and working on our salvation through our interactions with our family at home.

Philoptochos Tsoureki Sale:

The ladies of the St. Paraskevi Philoptochos will be offering delicious Tsoureki Breads for Easter that are baked, wrapped and individually boxed by the Sisters of Agia Skepi. Only pre-orders will be sold! The cost is $25 for each 2-pound bread. Please make checks payable to St. Paraskevi Philoptochos. Orders must be received by April 21, 2024. Tsoureki will be available for pick-up on Palm Sunday, April 28^th after Liturgy.

Calliopus and Akylina the Martyrs

The holy Martyr Calliopius was from Perga in Pamphylia, brought up in piety by his godly mother Theocleia. When the persecution of Maximian broke out, Saint Calliopius presented himself of his own accord before the Governor Maximus in Pompeiopolis of Galatia. After he had suffered many torments, his mother visited him in prison and encouraged him in his martyrdom. After this, his thrice-blessed mother, upon learning that he was to be crucified on Holy and Great Thursday, bribed the tyrants to defer it one day, that he might imitate the Lord's Crucifixion on the same day that He suffered it. The holy Martyr Calliopius received the crown of martyrdom on Holy and Great Friday in the year 304, being crucified upside down.

Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow and Enlightener of North America

Born in 1865 in the region of Pskov, our Father among the Saints Tikhon was tonsured a monk in 1891 and ordained to the priesthood in the same year. In 1897 he was consecrated Bishop of Lublin, and a year later appointed Bishop of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, with his see extending to all of North America from 1900 onwards. He did much to unite the Orthodox Christians of a great many ethnic backgrounds in North America, so that there was indeed one flock under one shepherd. In 1907 he was made Archbishop of Yaroslavl and Rostov, and in 1913, Archbishop of Lithuania.

In 1917, when he was Metropolitan of Moscow, he was elected to be the first Patriarch of Russia in over 200 years, in times that could not have been more difficult. After the Revolution of 1917, the persecution of the Russian Church by the atheist government grew more bold and more fierce with every year. By nature a meek and peace-loving man, Tikhon sought to determine, while giving only to God that which is God's, what could be given to Caesar to preserve peace and avoid the shedding of blood. At his departure on the feast of the Annunciation in 1925, Saint Tikhon made the sign of the Cross thrice, pronouncing the words, "Glory to Thee, O God!" Because of the many unspeakable sufferings he endures as Patriarch, he is honoured as a Confessor.

Note: St. Tikhon's repose was on the Feast of the Annunciation according to the Old Calendar (March 25), but on the New Calendar his repose falls on April 7.

Miltiades, Pope of Rome

St. Miltiades was the 3nd Pope of Rome, beginning his papacy in 311 AD. His papacy coincided with the end of the persecution in the Roman Empire of Christians following Emperor Galerius' ending of the Diocletian Persecution of Christians through the Edict of Toleration. He was an advocate for peace and unity in the Church. The Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan in 313 AD during Miltiades' papacy. He died in 314 and is commemorated on April 10th in the Orthodox Church for his service to the Church and his defense of the faith. In the Roman Catholic church, he is commemorated on January 10.

Martin the Confessor, Pope of Rome

Saint Martin was born in Tuscany. He had been the papal delegate at Constantinople; upon the death of Pope Theodore, Saint Martin was elected his successor. At this time the Emperor Constans II, also known as Constantine Pogonatus (reigned 641-668), was seeking support of his confession of faith called the Typos, which espoused the Monothelite heresy, that is, that there is only one will and energy in the Incarnate Son of God. But the newly-consecrated Pope not only did not accept the Typos, but convened the Lateran Council of 649 (attended by 105 of his bishops, and Saint Maximus the Confessor, who was then in Rome), which anathematized the Typos and the Monothelite heresy. Because of this Saint Martin was seized by an imperial force in 653 and brought to Constantinople, where he was charged with sending money to the Saracens and conspiring with them, and blaspheming against the most holy Mother of God. Though innocent of these accusations, he was exiled to Cherson on the Black Sea, where, after many sufferings and privations, he received the crown of his courageous confession in the year 655.

BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. The key to knowledge is the humility of Christ. The door of the Kingdom of Heaven is open, not to those who only know in their learned minds the mysteries of faith and the commandments of their Creator, but to those who have progressed far enough to live by them.

To deny oneself means to give up one's bad habits; to root out of the heart all that ties us to the world; not to cherish bad thoughts and desires; to suppress every evil thought; to avoid occasions of sin; not to desire or to do anything out of self-love, but to do everything out of love for God. To deny oneself, according to St. Paul means "to be dead to sin. . . but alive to God."
