Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fifth Tone

We the faithful proclaim and worship the Word,* eternal with the Father and the Spirit.* He was born of the Virgin for our salvation.* He willingly ascended the Cross in the flesh and suffered death.* He raised the dead by His glorious resurrection.

Apolytikion for Sun. of St. Mary of Egypt in the Eighth Tone

The image of God was truly preserved in you, O mother, * for you took up the Cross and followed Christ. * By so doing you taught us to disregard the flesh, for it passes away, * but to care instead for the soul, since it is immortal. * Therefore your spirit, O holy mother Mary, * rejoices with the angels.

Troparion of the Dormition of The Theotokos in the First Tone

O Birthgiver of God, in giving birth you retained virginity; and in your falling asleep you did not forsake the world. You are the Mother of Life and have passed into life, and by your prayers have delivered our souls from death.

Resurrectional Kontakion in the Fifth Tone

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit! O my Savior, You descended into the realm of death.* You crushed its power, for You are the Almighty.* As Creator, You raised the dead with Yourself.* Adam, who had been condemned, was redeemed.* O Lover of mankind, we call to You, saying: "O Lord, save Us!"

Saint Mary of Egypt Kontakion in the Third Tone

Once filled with all kinds of vice,* now through repentance she appears as the bride of Christ,* Leading an angelic life, she crushes the devils with the help of the Cross.* Therefore, the venerable Mary has become a bride of the Kingdom.

Resurrectional Theotokion in the Fifth Tone

Now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen! Hail! Gate of the Lord no one can enter!* Hail! Defense and protection of those who come to you!* Hail! Peaceful haven who has never known man, and yet has given birth to your Maker and God!* Never cease to intercede for those who sing the praise of the One born of you, of those who worship Him.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Second Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Mark 16:1-8

When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back, for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you." And they went out and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to any one, for they were afraid.

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fifth Tone. Psalm 11.7,1.
You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us.
Verse: Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:11-14.

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Gospel Reading

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt
The Reading is from Mark 10:32-45

At that time, Jesus took his twelve disciples, and he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

April 14

Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

The memory of this Saint is celebrated on April 1, where her life is recorded. Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness forty-seven years; and also that the great loving-kindness of God, and His readiness to receive the repentant, might be demonstrated in very deed.

Wisdom of the Fathers

But let no man be troubled at the apostles being in such an imperfect state. For not yet was the cross accomplished, not yet the grace of the Spirit given. But if thou wouldest learn their virtue, notice them after these things, and thou wilt see them superior to every passion.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 65 on Matthew 20, 2,3,4,6. B#54, pp.399-401,403., 4th Century

Before He humbled Himself, only the angels knew him. After He humbled Himself, all human nature knew Him. You see how His humbling of Himself did not make Him have less but produced countless benefits, countless deeds of virtue, and made His glory shine forth with greater brightness? God wants for nothing and has need of nothing. Yet, when He humbled Himself, He produced such great good, increased His household, and extended His kingdom. Why, then, are you afraid that you will become less if you humble yourself?
St. John Chrysostom
On the Incomprehensible Nature of God. 8.46-47. Taken from: Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. Vol: Mark. Intervarsity Press, 2005, p. 143.

The first and principal token of humility is the delighted readiness of the soul to accept indignity, to receive it with open arms, to welcome it as something that relieves and cauterizes diseases of the soul and grievious sins. The second token is the wiping out of anger - and modesty over the fact that it has subsided. Third and preeminent is the honest distrust of one's own virtues, together with an unending desire to learn more.
St. John Climacus
Ladder of Divine Ascent, Step 25:On Humility; Paulist Press pg. 220, 6th century

Nothing done in humility for the sake of God is bad. But things and pursuits differ. Everything not strictly necessary is a hindrance to salvation - everything, that is to say, that does not contribute to the soul's salvation or to the body's life. For it is not food, but gluttony, that is bad; not money, but attachment to it; not speech, but idle talk; not the world's delights, but dissipation; not love of one's family, but the neglect of God that such love may produce; not the clothes worn only for covering and protection from cold and heat, but those that are excessive and costly; not houses that also protect us from heat and cold, as well as anything human or animal that might harm us, but houses with two or three floors, large and expensive;...not friendship, but the having of friends who are of no benefit to one's soul; not woman, but unchastity; not wealth but avarice; not wine but drunkenness; not anger used in accordance with nature for the chastisement of sin, but its use against one's fellow-men.
St. Peter of Damaskos
Book 1: Treasury of Divine Knowledge, Philokalia Vol. 3 edited by Palmer, Sherrard and Ware; Faber and Faber pg. 156, 8th century

Simplicity before others, guilelessness, mutual love, joy and humility of every kind, must be laid down as the foundation of the community. Otherwise, disparaging others or grumbling about them, we make our labour profitless. He who persists ceaselessly in prayer must not disparage the man incapable of doing this, nor must the man who devotes himself to serving the needs of the community complain about those who are dedicated to prayer. For if both the prayers and the service are offered in a spirit of simplicity and love for others, the superabundance of those dedicated to prayer will make up for the insufficiency of those who serve, and vice versa.
St. Makarios the Great
Homilies, II: Prayer no. 26, Philokalia Vol. 3 edited by Palmer, Sherrard and Ware; Faber and Faber pg. 295, 4th century

From Father Vincent's Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Glory be to Jesus Christ! Glory be Forever!

In the Gospel according Saint Mark we heard Our Lord telling His Apostles about how they will go to Jerusalem and how He will be arrested by the Chief Priests and be crucified and rise from the dead. The Apostles are said to be both amazed and afraid because of this prediction of the suffering and death of their master and Lord. We hear in the Gospel Jesus saying these words, listen closely; “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise.”

Did you listen closely? Our Saviour predicted the death he would suffer through His own free will, accepting death by being nailed to a wooden cross. This death was an execution sentence for a condemned common criminal, reserved by the Roman Government for the most evil of men. Our Great God and Saviour Jesus Christ, the Eternally begotten Son of God, chose to be born in time of the Theotokos and be raised as a poor boy in Nazareth. When He grew up into a Man, at the age of 30, he began to preach about the Heavenly Kingdom of His Father, the One with whom He created the Heavens and the Earth. He preached a beautiful message of Love, peace, and repentance, yet He was hated by the Hebrew leaders because He called Himself the Son of God.

Have you been listening? What have you heard? We should be pondering within ourselves; Why did Jesus choose to die on the Cross and Rise from the dead? This question can be answered easily with this simple statement: Jesus Christ freely chose to die on the Cross and Rise from the dead because of His great Love for mankind. He came into this world of darkness and died on the cross to save us from our sins, and He rose from the dead to destroy forever, the power of the devil and to lead us all into the Heavenly Kingdom of Our God and Father.

We are all sinners and are stuck in the mud of our passions, which are the sins that have become normal to us, which we fall into all the time and continually confess. We need Christ to save us from these sins, which, if left unattended, will cause us to spiritually die. We can not save ourselves, we need to trust in the Grace of God and fight against the temptations that the demons throw at us.

We are truly able, with the help of God’s Divine Grace, to conquer the evil spiritual forces that make war against us. When we were created in God’s Image and Likeness, we were given everything we needed to enter into communion with the all Holy Trinity, but instead, we chose to enter into communion with the demons and freely embraced sin and passion.

Why was this Fall into sin possible? It was possible because God our creator imparted to us three great gifts at our creation; they are freedom, reason, and Love. The Great Russian Theologian Father Michael Pomazansky wrote this about Man’s Fall into Sin: “These three divine gifts of freedom, reason, and Love are indispensable for the spiritual growth and blessedness of man. But where there is freedom there is the possibility of wavering in one’s choice; thus, temptation is possible. The temptation for reason is to grow proud in mind; instead of acknowledging the wisdom and goodness of God, to seek the knowledge of good and evil outside of God; to desire oneself to be a “god.” The temptation for the feeling of Love is: in place of love for God and one’s neighbor, to love oneself and everything that satisfies the (flesh) which are the lower desires and gives temporary enjoyment.”

Today we have before us a great example of a Saintly woman who was drowning in the darkness of sin and passion, and then because of her encounter with the Theotokos and the Cross of Our Saviour she woke up from her spiritual slumber in sin, and used her God given freedom to truly Love God her Creator. This Great Saint that the Church commemorates today on this 5th Sunday of the Great Fast is Saint Mary of Egypt. Listen carefully to this short story of her conversion so that we might learn how to come to true repentance and be truly sorrow for our sins.

Saint Mary lived in the 6th century in the country of Egypt.  At the early age of twelve Mary left her home and came to Alexandria. While in Alexandria for 17 years she led a life of public prostitution. Towards the end of her time in Alexandria she decided to go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Mary embarked for Palestine with very evil intentions for she hoped that life on board a ship would afford her new and abundant opportunities for gratifying her insatiable lust for sexual exploitation. After arriving in Jerusalem she persisted in her shameless life. Then, on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross Mary joined the crowds who were journeying towards the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. There the sacred relic of the true Cross of Our Lord was to be venerated. Mary was hoping to meet in the gathering, some new victims whom she might allure into sin.

When she reached the church door, she suddenly felt herself repelled by some secret force, and after attempting to enter the Church three or four times, she ran out into the churchyard, and was struck with remorse for her wicked life, which she recognized as the cause of her exclusion from the Church. Mary immediately began weeping bitter tears and beating her breast, as she began to repent very much like the Prodigal Son lamenting over her sins. Just then her eyes fell upon an Icon of the Theotokos and with deep faith and humility of heart Mary prayed to the Theotokos, that she would be granted permission to enter the Holy Church and venerate the sacred wood of the Cross on which Jesus Christ our Saviour had suffered, promising that if her request were granted, she would then renounce forever the world and its ways, and follow whatever spiritual way the Theotokos would lead her.

Encouraged by prayer and counting on the mercy of the Mother of God, she once more approached the door of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and this time succeeded in entering without the slightest difficulty. Having venerated the Holy Cross and kissing the pavement of the Church, she returned to the Icon of the Theotokos, and while praying there for guidance in regards to her future, Mary heard a voice from the heavens telling her that if she crossed the Jordan, she would find rest. That same evening Mary reached the Jordan and received Holy Communion in a Church dedicated to  Saint John the Baptist, and the day following crossed the river and wandered eastward into the desert that stretches towards Arabia. Here she lived as a desert Nun for 47 years, eating only herbs and roots, repenting of her life of sin, and by The Gift of God’s Divine Grace became Deified.

Saint Mary spent the rest of her earthly life in this desert in constant prayer and repentance, only to be found by A Priest Monk named Zosima, who after the custom of his monastery, desired to spend Lent in the desert. Mary asked Father Zosima to bring her the Holy Eucharist. When the appointed evening arrived, Father Zosima, put into a small chalice a portion of the undefiled Body and the precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and met Saint Mary at the spot they agreed upon. After some time Mary appeared on the eastern bank of the Jordan River, and having made the Sign of the Cross, She walked upon the waters to the western side of the Jordan to meet Father Zosima. Having received Holy Communion, she raised her hands towards heaven, and cried aloud in the words of Simeon: "Now you can dismiss your servant, O Lord, according to your word in peace, because my eyes have seen your salvation."

Saint Mary asked Father Zosima to come back after a year to the spot where he had first met her in the desert. Father Zosima returned a year later to find the poor Saint's incorrupt body, and written beside it on the ground a request that he should bury her, and a statement that she had died a year before, on the very night on which he had given her Holy Communion, by the bank of the Jordan River. Father Zosima, with the help of a lion, prepared the Saints grave and buried her.

Through the Prayers of Saint Mary of Egypt may Christ Our True God have mercy on us and save us! Amen!
