Another Year; Another Chance

We come once again to the Sunday before the Feast of Holy Cross. Year after year the Church begins the cycle of Feasts in September. Our annual commemoration of the Holy Cross is an annual reminder both of God’s love for us and our love for Him. It gives  us another chance, year after year, to ‘get it right’ and mirror the love of God in our lives.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3.16) In this famous verse of the Holy Scriptures we learn the essence of our relationship with God. He loves us and we believe in Him.

In calling our minds to this relationship every year at this time, the Church is asking us, “What has changed since last year?” Has our life been centered on belief in Christ, or has our belief waned? It may help to remember another verse from today’s reading. “No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.” (John 3.13)

Year after year God continues to come down from heaven, to raise us up to heaven. He never gives up, no matter how we may have walked away from Him. We say we believe, but year after year, our actions prove our belief remains mostly in our minds rather than our actions. Even despite our walking away, God still comes to save us rather than condemn us.

So, what is our response to this annual reminder of God’s faithfulness? Put quite simply, we must believe enough that it changes our lives. We must be willing to meet God along the path of salvation and allow Him to raise us up to heaven. We shouldn’t take our annual reminder as condemnation but another chance for Him to save us.

“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” (John 3.17) This year is another chance for us to be saved by God. Let's not let another year go by without taking God up on His offer for salvation. It’s time to believe in Him and live forever with Him in heaven.

ΕΙΜΑΣΤΕ, ἀγαπητοί μου, βαπτισμένοι «εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Πατρὸς καὶ τοῦ Υἱοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος». Μέγα μυστήριο τὸ βάπτισμα. Οἱ γονεῖς ἂς προσέχουν νὰ βαπτίζουν τὰ παιδιά τους νωρίς. Καὶ ἂν κάποιο ἀ­βάπτιστο παιδὶ ἀρρωστήσῃ καὶ κινδυνεύῃ τὴ νύχτα νὰ πεθάνῃ καὶ παπᾶς δὲν βρίσκεται, μπορεῖ νὰ τὸ βαπτίσῃ ἡ μάνα. Νὰ τὸ σηκώσῃ τρεῖς φορὲς στὸν ἀέρα καὶ νὰ πῇ «Βαπτίζεται ὁ δοῦλος (ἢ ἡ δούλη) τοῦ Θεοῦ (τάδε) εἰς τὸ ὄ­νομα τοῦ Πα­τρὸς καὶ τοῦ Υἱοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἁ­γίου Πνεύματος», καὶ τὸ παιδὶ ἔχει βαπτι­σθῆ.Τί σημαίνει ὁ σταυρός; Ὅταν λέμε σταυρὸ δὲν ἐννοοῦμε ἁπλῶς τὸ ξύλινο αὐτὸ ἢ πέτρινο ἢ μεταλλικὸ σχῆμα. Ἐννοοῦμε αὐτὸν ποὺ τὸ ἁγίασε, δηλαδὴ τὸν Ἐσταυρωμένο, καὶ ὅλη τὴ ζωὴ καὶ τὴ διδασκαλία καὶ τὰ δόγματα ποὺ μᾶς παρέδωσε· ἐννοοῦμε τὰ πάθη, ποὺ ὑπέφε­ρε γιὰ τὴ σωτηρία μας, τὴ θυσία καὶ τὸ αἷμα του ποὺ χύθηκε ἐπάνω στὸ σταυρό.Γι᾽ αὐτὸ ἀκριβῶς τελοῦμε τὸ μυστήριο τῆς θείας εὐχαριστίας· «Λάβετε φάγετε… Πίετε ἐξ αὐτοῦ πάντες…». Κι ὅταν κοινωνοῦμε δὲν κοινωνοῦμε ψωμὶ καὶ κρασί. Ὄχι. Τὴν ὥρα ἐ­κείνη γίνεται θαῦμα. Στὸ ἅγιο ποτήριο εἶνε ὅ­λος ὁ Χριστός. Ὁ ἄρτος καὶ ὁ οἶνος τῆς θείας εὐχαριστίας, ὅταν τὰ εὐλογήσῃ ὁ ἱερεὺς καὶ ἔρθῃ τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιο, γίνονται σῶμα καὶ αἷμα τοῦ ἐσταυρωμένου Λυτρωτοῦ μας. Καὶ ὅποιος κοινωνεῖ ἀξίως τῶν ἀχράντων μυστηρίων, αὐτὸς ἔχει τὸ Χριστὸ μέσα του, εἶνε πράγματι πλούσιος καὶ εὐτυχισμένος.

Ὁ σταυρὸς τῶν ὀρθοδόξων θαυματουργεῖ, κάνει θαύματα. Πότε κάνει θαύματα; Πρῶτον ὅταν ἔχῃς πίστι, καὶ δεύτερον ὅταν ἔχῃς ἀγάπη καὶ ἐκτελῇς τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Θεοῦ.

⃝ Πρῶτον· μὲ πίστι στὸν Ἐσταυρωμένο, ὅτι ὁ Χριστὸς εἶνε ὁ Θεός. Νὰ πιστεύῃς ὅπως ὁ λῃ­στής, ποὺ ὅταν εἶδε τὸν Ἐσταυρωμένο μετανόησε καὶ εἶπε· «Μνήσθητί μου, Κύριε, ὅ­ταν ἔλ­θῃς ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου» (Λουκ. 23,42). Νὰ πιστεύῃς ὅπως ὁ ἑκατόνταρχος, ποὺ ὅταν εἶ­δε νὰ τρέμῃ ἡ γῆ, νὰ σείωνται τὰ βράχια καὶ νὰ σκοτεινιάζῃ ὁ ἥλιος, εἶπε· «Ἀληθῶς Θεοῦ υἱ­ὸς ἦν οὗτος» (Ματθ. 27,54). Νὰ πιστεύῃς ὅπως ὁ Σαῦλος, ποὺ ἀπὸ διώκτης ἔγινε κήρυκας τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἀπόστολος Παῦλος.

⃝ Δεύτερον· ὁ σταυρὸς κάνει θαύματα ὅταν ὄχι ἁπλῶς πιστεύῃς, ἀλλὰ ἐκδηλώνῃς τὴν πίστι σου μὲ ἔργα ἀγάπης, ὅταν ἐκτελῇς τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Θεοῦ. Ὅπως περπάτησε ὁ Χριστός, ἔτσι νὰ περπατοῦμε κ᾽ ἐμεῖς. Ὁ Χριστὸς εἶνε ὁ δρόμος. «Ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ὁδὸς καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια καὶ ἡ ζωή», εἶπε (Ἰωάν. 14,6). Αὐτὸν ν᾽ ἀκολουθήσουμε κ᾽ ἑμεῖς. Ὅπως ὁ Χριστὸς ἀγάπησε τὸ Θεό, τὸν οὐράνιο Πατέρα, ἔτσι κ᾽ ἐμεῖς νὰ τὸν ἀγαποῦμε πάνω ἀπ᾽ ὅλα. Κι ὅπως ὁ Χριστὸς ἀγάπησε τὸν ἄνθρωπο, ἔτσι κ᾽ ἐμεῖς ν᾽ ἀγαποῦμε τὸν πλησίον μας σὰν τὸν ἑαυτό μας. Κι ὅπως ὁ Χριστὸς ἦταν ἁγνὸς καὶ καθαρός, ἔτσι νὰ προσπαθοῦμε νὰ ζοῦμε κ᾽ ἐμεῖς. 

Ἕνα διήγημα λέει τὸ ἑξῆς. Κάποτε ἕνας τσοπᾶνος βαρέθηκε νὰ βόσκῃ πρόβατα. Τοῦ πέρασε ἡ ὑ­περήφανη ἰδέα νὰ γίνῃ βασιλιᾶς. Πῆγε καὶ βρῆκε ἕνα μάγο, κι αὐτὸς τοῦ ὑποσχέθηκε νὰ τὸν βοηθήσῃ. Τοῦ ᾽δωσε ἕνα χαρτὶ καὶ τοῦ ᾽πε, ὅταν νυχτώσῃ, νὰ πάῃ στὸ νεκροταφεῖο καὶ νὰ τὸ ῥίξῃ στὰ μνήματα. Ὅταν τὸ ἔκανε, μαζεύτηκαν οἱ δαίμονες καὶ οὔρλιαζαν. Ἀπὸ τὸ φόβο του ἔκανε τὸ σταυρό του, ὅπως εἶχε διδαχθῆ μικρός, κι ἀμέσως τὰ δαιμόνια ἔφυγαν. Ὅταν πῆγε πάλι στὸ μάγο, ἐκεῖνος τὸν μάλω­σε· τοῦ εἶπε, ὅτι δὲν ἔπρεπε νὰ κάνῃ τὸ σταυρό του. 

Προτοῦ νὰ τὸν ξαναστείλῃ στὰ μνήματα, τοῦ λέει· Θὰ πᾷς καὶ θὰ βρῇς ἕνα μικρὸ παιδάκι, θὰ τὸ σκοτώσῃς καὶ θὰ μοῦ φέρῃς τὴν καρδιά του. Δυσκολεύτηκε, ἀλλὰ μπροστὰ στὴν ἐπιθυμία νὰ γίνῃ βασιλιᾶς τό ᾽κανε τὸ ἔγκλημα. Πηγαίνει πάλι στὰ μνήματα καὶ ῥίχνει τὸ χαρτὶ μὲ τὰ μάγια. Μόλις παρουσιάστηκαν τὰ δαιμόνια, ἔκανε πάλι τὸ σταυρό του καὶ μιὰ καὶ δυὸ καὶ πολλὲς φορές, μὰ τὰ δαιμόνια δὲν ἔ­φυγαν. Γιατί δὲν ἔφυγαν; Τὸ καταλαβαίνετε· διότι ἁμάρτησε, ἔβαψε τὰ χέρια του στὸ αἷμα. Ὁ σταυρὸς κάνει θαύματα ὅταν ἔχῃς καθαρὰ τὰ χέρια ἀπὸ ἁμαρτίες, καθαρὴ τὴ γλῶσσα ἀ­πὸ βλαστήμιες, καθαρὸ τὸ κορμὶ ἀπὸ πορνεῖ­ες καὶ μοιχεῖες. Τότε κάνεις τὸ σταυρό σου μιὰ φορὰ καὶ κατεβάζεις τὰ ἄστρα στὴ γῆ.

Greetings in Christ,

This past Wednesday we experienced our very first Parish Ministry Night here at our St. Nicholas Cathedral. The event by any standard for first time ministries was a beautiful success, and a good indication of the greater potential for these events and events like it in our community. This event saw nearly 90 parishioners of all ages in attendance. As was advertised, we joined together in worship in the Cathedral, following which we enjoyed fellowship and dinner in the Fr. Tryfon Hall. After Dinner, we Split into various groups where the older groups discussed various topics concerning our faith and the Theology of the Holy Cross. And the younger children followed the same theme but also participated in craft making.

I wish to thank tremendously the Hope and Joy, Day Camps, Sunday School, Little Lambs, Philadelphia Men's Ministry, And the Women's Book Club, Goya, and Greek Folk Dance Ministries respectively for their efforts in coordinating and enacting this incredible start to our Parish Ministry Nights. 

As an aside, we are looking for individuals who are interested in joining a committee whose sole purpose is to make sure that there is a meal served at every Parish Ministry Night. If you are interested in participating, please contact me via my email (vikentios@stnicholastarpon.org)

This Sunday we are excited dually by the return of Sunday School, which will be held after Divine Liturgy. And by the beginning of another new ministry of our Church! Following Divine Liturgy from 12-2pm, the High School Upper Class Goyans will have Lunch with the Dean! This ministry is aimed to prepare these young men and women for life after graduation.

With the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross approaching this coming week, I have another friendly challenge for all of us to consider. I would like everyone to contemplate what it means to put on the Armor of God. In Ephesians 6:13 we read; “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” The Holy Cross is the symbol of our faith, and our protection. When we are faced with adversity, we make the sign of the cross over ourselves invoking the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. From our baptism, a cross is placed around our neck dually as a reminder of the weight of salvation, and as protection from harm. The cross is undoubtedly interwoven within the very fabric of our faith. My challenge is to take the time to contemplate these things, and if for any reason you aren't wearing a cross daily, put one on as a reminder of our struggle towards salvation, and as a protection from our adversaries.
