Don’t Allow Your ‘Christmas Preparations’ to Stop You from Preparing for Christmas

The so-called Christmas Season for many can be filled with anxiety, guilt, gluttony, depression, and all-around hectic atmosphere. Have you asked yourself why it has to be this way? The answer is simple yet profound. We normally spend the time leading up to Christmas shopping, cleaning, decorating, going over our ‘to do lists’ and in a constant state of panic that we won’t get everything accomplished in time for Christmas (at this point) a WHOLE MONTH away.

We’re never quite sure if we can get everything done, so when the Church asks us to spend EVEN MORE time reading Scriptures, coming to Church, helping the poor, and on top of all that,  the Church tells us we should be FASTING?! Is the Church kidding? You may even think the Church is “out of touch” with the reality of Christmas. And this doesn’t even begin to express the general atmosphere of exhaustion of Christmas Day when the Church ACTUALLY THINKS we can be in Church Christmas morning when we have ALL THAT cooking to do.

So what’s the answer?......S L O WD O W N!

MAKE TIME for prayer. MAKE TIME for reading Scripture. MAKE TIME for helping the poor. PLAN to fast. Tell some friends you can’t make their party Saturday night because you’re going to spend some quiet family time at Church. And when you are decorating your home for Christmas, don’t forget to include some Orthodox decorations like some Icons which will help you remember what you are actually preparing for.

The busy ‘preparations’ won’t prepare your soul. YOU have to do that! Something to think about during the remaining month of the Christmas Fast. To assist you in preparing your soul for Christmas, I have set aside time each Friday until Christmas for Holy Confessions. You don’t need an appointment. All you need is a desire to grow closer to Christ this year for Christmas.

Go ahead and purchase gifts. Decorate your home. Plan a family banquet. Just don’t forget why you’re doing all these things this year. You’re preparing to celebrate Christmas.

Greetings in Christ,

Two weeks ago we shared in a beautiful expression of our communal Orthodox faith. Sunday the thirteenth, we came together for the Orthros and Divine Liturgy, fulfilling our sacramental commitment to Christ in His Church, following which the Angels Day camp was run beautifully, offering our youth an opportunity to grow in their faith, and knowledge of their faith in a thoughtfully produced environment. Among what they explored through crafts, lessons, and activities was the Orthodox teachings concerning the Angelic Hosts and their Orders. The Cherubic Hymn of the Angels, The Prayer to their Guardian Angel, and a great deal more of complementary offerings. After which, in the early evening, our whole community gathered appropriately in thanksgiving for the annual Friendsgiving event. Between the delicious food, the beat of the music, dancing, games, laughter and smiles, there was no room for anything but joyful celebration. I thank everyone who attended for turning these events into joyous occasions, and I thank those who gave of their time and talents to put these events into motion and run them as they require monumental effort, of which I saw an abundant wealth from those who bore that joyful burden through the day.

Our Boy Scouts are having an absolute blast in the Everglades. From the pictures they have sent me, I can see that the whole group is still in one piece, giving me some confidence in my desire to join them next time around

Upcoming, This Saturday our Philadelphia Men’s Ministry is meeting for their monthly breakfast. As there is Divine Liturgy in the morning, we will join together first for Liturgy, then we will go across to the usual meeting place for our breakfast.

The Choir is decorating the Christmas tree after Divine Liturgy this Sunday, so we can expect to enjoy its presence for the remainder of the Christmas season!

Please remember to bring your Children to Sunday School after Divine Liturgy, and to collect them at 12pm as it ends. Our dedicated Sunday School teachers continue to put great effort into their lessons for the sake of your childrens’ spiritual growth and knowledge!

On Friday the 9th of December from 1-3pm, the opportunity for the Sacrament of Confession is available without appointment in the Chapel.

My challenge for us this week is to consider your family Patron Saint. In our faith tradition, we are often named after those saints who have come before us and of whom have earned crowns of glory. Oftentimes we choose our family patron saint after the patron saint of our father. Though there are other iterations of this. A while ago the challenge I gave was to learn the Hymns related to your patron saint, and to incorporate them into your daily prayers. My Challenge this week is to learn the apolytikion of your family patron saint so that you can incorporate it into your daily prayers alongside your own.

James the Great Martyr of Persia

This Saint was from the city of Bythlaba and was of noble birth; he was the closest and most honoured friend of Isdiger (or Yazdegerd) I, King of Persia (reigned 399-420). Though a Christian from his youth, James renounced Christ because he was allured by the King's friendship and flatteries. When his mother and his wife learned of this, they declared to him by letter that they would have nothing more to do with him, since he had preferred a glory that is temporal to the love of Christ. Wounded in soul by these words and coming to himself, the Saint wept over his error, and repudiated the worship of the idols. Therefore, becoming exceedingly wroth, the King - this was Bahram (or Varahran) V (reigned 421-438), Isdiger's son and successor - condemned him to a most bitter death, the likes of which not even a brute beast was ever condemned to: that is, his body was dismembered at every joint of his arms and legs. And so, when he had been cut asunder limb by limb to his very hips and shoulders, the courageous Martyr was finally beheaded, in the year 421.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Mode

By Your cross, O Lord, You shattered death; to the thief You opened paradise. You transformed the Myrrhbearers' lamentation, and commanded Your Apostles to proclaim that You arose, Christ our God, granting to the world Your great mercy.

Apolytikion for Martyr James the Persian in the 1st Mode

The holy martyrs suffered painful tortures for Your sake, O Lord; be constrained by what they endured, and heal our every pain, we entreat You, as the only One who loves humanity.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 3rd Mode

On this day the Virgin cometh to the cave to give birth to * God the Word ineffably, * Who was before all the ages. * Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing * the gladsome tidings; * with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him * Who is willing to be gazed on * as a young Child Who * before the ages is God.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Second Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Mark 16:1-8

When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back - it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, He is not here; see the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples and Peter that He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see Him, as He told you." And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Second Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

13th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 2:14-22

Brethren, Christ is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

13th Sunday of Luke

Gospel Reading

13th Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 18:18-27

At that time, a ruler came to Jesus and asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.' " And he said, "All these I have observed from my youth." And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." But when he heard this he became sad, for he was very rich. Jesus looking at him said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Those who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?" But he said, "What is impossible with men is possible with God."

13th Sunday of Luke
