  Our Sunday School will be focusing on the topic of confession as we approach Holy Week and Pascha. As part of this, Fr. Konstantinos will be available to students after the Lazarus Saturday Retreat on Saturday, April 8th. Students may give a confession or simply talk to Fr. Konstantinos about preparing for Pascha.

Palm Sunday

On Sunday, five days before the Passover of the Law, the Lord came from Bethany to Jerusalem. Sending two of His disciples to bring Him a foal of an ass, He sat thereon and entered into the city. When the multitude there heard that Jesus was coming, they straightway took up the branches of palm trees in their hands, and went forth to meet Him. Others spread their garments on the ground, and yet others cut branches from the trees and strewed them in the way that Jesus was to pass; and all of them together, especially the children, went before and after Him, crying out: "Hosanna: Blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord, the King of Israel" (John 12:13). This is the radiant and glorious festival of our Lord's entry into Jerusalem that we celebrate today.

The branches of the palm trees symbolize Christ's victory over the devil and death. The word Hosanna means "Save, I pray," or "Save, now." The foal of an ass, and Jesus' sitting thereon, and the fact that this animal was untamed and considered unclean according to the Law, signified the former uncleanness and wildness of the nations, and their subjection thereafter to the holy Law of the Gospel.

The Holy Martyr Eupsychius of Caesarea

This holy Martyr was from the parts of Cappadocia, and lived a blameless life with his wife. During the reign of Julian the Apostate, this blessed one was filled with divine zeal and, with other Christians, destroyed the pagan temple dedicated to Fortune. Because of this he received the crown of martyrdom by beheading in the year 362.

The Reading is from John 12:1-18

Six days before Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazaros was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Lazaros was one of those at table with him. Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. Jesus said, "Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me."

When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazaros, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazaros also to death, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written, "Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!" His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazaros out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.

Sunday's Sermon

 ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ ΤΩΝ ΒΑΙΩΝ

 Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί,

Σήμερα θα ακούσουμε στιην εκκλησία να ψάλλεται το Απολυτίκιο της ημέρας, που έχει ως εξής:  “Επιβεβαιώνοντας τὴν κοινὴ Ἀνάσταση όλων μας πριν από το Πάθος Σου, ανέστησες τὸ Λάζαρο από τους νεκρούς, Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός·  Γι’αυτό και εμείς όπως τα παιδιά, κρατόντας τα σύμβολα της νίκης, φωνάζουμε σε Σένα το νικητή του θανάτου: Ωσαννά εν τοις υψίστοις, Ευλογημένος ο ερχόμενος εν ονόματι του Κυρίου ".

Τα γεγονότα που έλαβαν χώρα κατά την είσοδο του Χριστού στην ιερή πόλη της Ιερουσαλήμ, όπου μετά από λίγες μέρες θα υποφέρει πολλά βασανιστήρια και τελικά θα σταυρωθεί και θα αναστηθεί,  περιγράφονται και από τους τέσσερις Ευαγγελιστές.

Η είσοδος του Χριστού στα Ιεροσόλυμα, είχε ήδη προφήτευθεί στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη από τους προφήτες. Ο προφήτης Ζαχαρίας έλεγε: «Χαίρε τα μέγιστα Ω κόρη της Σιών! Κράυγαζε Κόρη των Ιεροσολύμων! Ιδού, ο Βασιλιάς σας έρχεται σε σας. Είναι δίκαιος και φέρνει τη σωτηρία. Είναι ταπεινός και καβαλάει σε ένα γαϊδουράκι, ένα πουλάρι... Αυτός θα διδάξει την ειρήνη στα έθνη. Η Κυριαρχία του θα εκτείνεται από θάλασσα σε θάλασσα, και από τον ποταμό ως τα πέρατα της γης »(Ζαχ. 9, 9 -10).

Ο Χριστός είναι ο Βασιλιάς του νέου Ισραήλ της χάριτος του Θεού, και η εξουσία Του δεν έχει καμία σχέση με την εγκόσμια δόξα. Η Βασιλεία Του είναι ένα βασίλειο της αγάπης και της ταπεινότητας. Οπως οι άγιοι Πατέρες σχολίασαν η ταπείνωση του Χριστού, φάνηκε από το γεγονός ότι μπήκε στα Ιεροσόλυμα "καθήμενος πάνω σε ένα νεαρό γάιδαρο».

Και αυτό το γεγονός επίσης προφητεύτηκε στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη. Ο άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Παλαμάς μας θυμίζει ότι ο Πατριάρχης Ιακώβ, αναφερόμενος στον γιο του Ιούδα, από τον οποίο κατάγεται και ο Χριστός, προφήτευσε την ενσάρκωση του Υιού και Λόγου του Θεού και είπε, μεταξύ άλλων γι’αυτόν: “Θα δέσει το γαϊδούρι του στο αμπέλι, και το πουλάρι του γαϊδουριού του στην έλικα της αμπέλου” (Γεν. 49,11).

Σύμφωνα με αυτή την προφητεία το αμπέλι είναι ο Χριστός, ενώ οι μαθητές Του είναι η έλικα της αμπέλου, το λεπτό στριφογυριστό βλαστάρι με την οποία ο κλάδος της αμπέλου τυλίγεται και στερεώνεται στον πάσαλο. Ετσι ο Χριστός δένει πάνω Του, μέσω των μαθητών Του, το πουλάρι της γαϊδούρας, δηλαδή το νέο Ισραήλ των εθνών. Με άλλα λόγια, οι μαθητές, οι οποίοι είναι οι κλάδοι της αμπέλου Του Χριστού, προσέλκυσαν στην πίστη του Χριστού τους εθνικούς και τους ένωσαν με την άμπελο την αληθινή, που είναι ο ίδιος ο Χριστός.

Η χαρά του εβραϊκού λαού κατά την είσοδο του Χριστού στα Ιεροσόλυμα ήταν απερίγραπτη. Φώναζαν: “Ωσαννά εν τοις υψίστοις! Ευλογημένος αυτός που έρχεται στο όνομα του Κυρίου”. Η λέξη Ωσαννά είναι εβραϊκή και σημαίνει "σώσε με, προσεύχομαι…". Προέρχεται από έναν ψαλμό του Δαβίδ, που ήταν γνωστός στους Εβραίους, που τον έψελναν στη Συναγωγή: «Θεέ μου σώσε μας τώρα. Θεέ μου, καθοδήγησε μας προς ένα ασφαλές και αίσιο τέρμα. Ευλογημένος είναι αυτός που έρχεται στο όνομα του Κυρίου! » (Ψαλμ. 118, 25-27). Και πάλι ο άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Παλαμάς μας λέει ότι το “Ωσαννά” είναι ένας ύμνος που προσφέρεται στο Θεό και ερμηνεύεται να μας σώσει και να είναι ευνοϊκός για εμάς, και το “εν τοις υψίστοις” δείχνει ότι οι έπαινοι αυτοί ψάλλονται προς τον Χριστό, όχι μόνο στη γη αλλά και στον ουρανό από τους αγγέλους.

Οι Εβραίοι επίσης εκραύγαζαν λέγοντας: «Ωσαννά τω Υιώ Δαβίδ». Τον αποκαλούσαν γιο του Δαβίδ, επειδή γνώριζαν από την προφητείες της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης ότι ο Χριστός θα γεννηθεί από το γένος του Δαβίδ. Ο Θεός είχε δώσει την υπόσχεση Του και τον λόγο του στο Δαυίδ λέγοντας: "Ο Κύριος έχει ορκιστεί αληθινή υπόσχεση στο Δαυίδ και δεν θα την παραβεί. Από τους απογόνους σου θα ανεβάσω διάδοχο στο θρόνο σου» (Ψαλμ.132,11). Ο κόσμος που υποδεχόταν το Χριστό ήταν φωτισμένος εκείνη τη στιγμή από το Άγιο Πνεύμα. Θυμόντουσαν αυτό τον Ψαλμό και κατανοούσαν ότι ο Χριστός ήταν ο Μεσσίας τον οποίο ο Θεός είχε υποσχεθεί για τη σωτηρία τους. Με αυτό τον ύμνο Χριστός επαινείται ως ο νικητής του θανάτου. Η νίκη και ο θρίαμβος των στρατιωτών πάνω στους επίγειους εχθρούς τους δεν μπορεί να συγκριθεί με τη νίκη του Χριστού πάνω στο διάβολο και στο θάνατο. Αυτός είναι ο λόγος για τον οποίο αυτός ο ύμνος είναι μοναδικός.

Οι κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ όχι μόνο φωνάζαν και υμνούσαν το Χριστό σαν Θεό, αλλά κρατούσαν επίσης κλαδιά φοίνικα στα χέρια τους. Αυτή η σκηνή που έλαβε χώρα, θυμίζει τη θριαμβευτική υποδοχή ενός ηγέτη-ενός βασιλιά-που έχει κατατροπώσει τους εχθρούς του. Από μαρτυρίες που έχουμε, η αρχαία εκκλησία επαναλάμβανε αυτή τη θριαμβευτική σκηνή στα Ιεροσόλυμα. Γινόντουσαν λιτανείες που κρατούσαν κλαδιά φοίνικα, οι άνθρωποι περπάταγαν μέχρι το Όρος των Ελαιών, ενώ ο Επίσκοπος σαν άλλος Χριστος καθόταν πάνω σε ένα γαϊδούρι. Η πομπή με τα κλαδιά του φοίνικα, αναφέρεται σε πολλά τροπάρια της Κυριακής των Βαΐων. Σύμφωνα με τον Άγιο Επιφάνιο, οι Έλληνες χρησιμοποιούν μία Αιγυπτιακή λέξη για το φοίνικα, "Βάγια", που σημαίνει μικρό κλαδί φοίνικα. Ακόμα και σήμερα, εμείς οι Χριστιανοί, τα κρατάμε στα χέρια μας για να συμβολίσουμε όχι μόνο τη θριαμβευτική υποδοχή του Χριστού, αλλά και την ύπαρξη των πνευματικών αρετών. Η Σαρακοστή, σαράντα μέρες με προσευχή και νηστεία έχει ήδη περάσει, και έτσι έχουμε γίνει έτοιμοι να υποδεχθούμε τον Αναστημένο Χριστό.

Η ανάσταση του Λάζαρου και η θριαμβευτική είσοδος του Χριστού στα Ιεροσόλυμα αντιπροσωπεύουν την ελπίδα της ανθρωπότητας για τη γενική ανάσταση και προς το παρόν - για την είσοδο του Χριστού στην καθαρή καρδιά του ανθρώπου. Αυτά τα γεγονότα δεν πρέπει να εξετάζονται επιφανειακά, αλλά πρέπει να γίνονται αφορμή  πνευματικής γιορτής για τον καθένα μας. Γι’αυτό σας παρακαλώ όλους, να ενώσουμε τις προσευχές μας και να ζητήσουμε από τον Κύριο μας να μας αξιώσει να συμμετάσχουμε στη δόξα της Αναστάσεως Του σε μία εβδομάδα από τώρα.

PALM SUNDAY

 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today we will hear our chanters sing the Apolytikion of this memorable day, that is as follows: “Giving us before Your Passion an assurance of the general resurrection, You have raised Lazarus from the dead, O Christ our God. Therefore like the children, we also carry tokens of victory, and cry to You, the Conqueror of death: Hosanna in the highest ; blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord”.

The events that took place during Christ’s entrance into the holy city of Jerusalem, where after a few days He would endure many tortures and finally be crucified and resurrected, are described by all four Evangelists.

Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, was prophesied in the Old Testament by the prophets. The prophet Zachariah prophesies: “Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout O Daughter of Jerusalem ! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation. Lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey…He shall speak peace to the nations ; His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth” (Zach. 9, 9-10).

Christ is the King of the new Israel of the grace of God, but His rule has nothing to do with worldly glory. His Kingdom is a kingdom of love and humility. Christ’s humility, as the holy Fathers commented, is seen in the fact that He entered Jerusalem “seated on a young donkey”. St. John the Evangelist writes “Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it”.

This event was also prophesied in the Old Testament. Saint Gregory Palamas reminds us that Patriarch Jacob, referring to his son Judah, from whom Christ descended, and prophesying the incarnation of the Son of God and Word of God, said, among other things: “Binding his donkey to the vine, and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine” (Gen. 49,11). According to this prophecy the vine is Christ, and His Disciples are the choice vine, the so called scissors (in Greek “helix”) by which the branch of the vine is wound round the wood and held firm, by whom Christ bound to himself the donkeys’ colt, that is to say the new Israel of the gentiles. In other words, the Disciples, who are the branches of Christ’s vine, drew the gentiles to the faith of Christ and united them with the true vine which is Christ himself.

The joy of the Jewish people at the entry of Christ into Jerusalem was unbounded. They shouted: “Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”. The word Hosanna is  Hebrew and means “save, I pray”. It comes from a psalm of David, which was well known to the Jews because they sang it in the Synagogue: “Oh Lord save now, I pray, oh Lord. Oh Lord, I pray, send now prosperity. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Ps. 118, 25-27).  Again St. Gregory Palamas tells us that “Hosanna” is a hymn that is offered to God and is interpreted save us and be favorable to us, and “in the highest” shows that the praises are sang to Christ not only on earth but also in Heaven by the angels.

The Jews cried out also saying: “Hosanna to the son of David”. They called him son of David because they knew from the prophesies of the Old Testament that Christ would come from David’s line. David was given God’s promise and his word: “The Lord has sworn in truth to David, He will not turn away from it: I will set upon your throne the fruit of your body” (PS 132, 11). The people were illumined at that moment by the Holy Spirit. They were reminded of that Psalm and understood that Christ was the Messiah promised for their salvation. With this hymn Christ is praised as the Victor over death. The victory and the triumph of soldiers over earthly armies cannot be compared with Christ’s victory over the devil and death. That is why this hymn is unique.

The people of Jerusalem were not only contended to shout and hymn Christ as God, but they also held the palms in their hands. This scene that took place, is reminiscent of receptions of a lay leader-a king- who has conquered his enemies. From testimonies that we have, the ancient church repeated this triumphal scene in Jerusalem. There were litanies with palm branches, the people walked to the Mount of Olives, were the Bishop as a figure of Christ was seated on a donkey. The procession with Palm branches is referred to in many troparia of the service of Palm Sunday.  According to St. Epiphanios, the Greeks  are using an Egyptian word for palm, “vagia”, which means a small branch of the palm. Even today, us Christians, we hold them in our hands to symbolize not only the triumphant reception of Christ but also the existence of the virtues. Lent, a forty day period of prayer and fasting has already gone by, and so we have become ready to receive the Risen Christ.

The raising of Lazarus and the triumphal entry of Christ into Jerusalem point to mankind’s hope for the general resurrection and -above all - for now - for the entrance of Christ into the pure heart of man. These events should not be examined externally, or superficially but instead should become spiritual feasts for each one of us. Therefore I ask all of you to join our prayers, and ask Christ our Lord to deem us worthy to participate in the glory of the Resurrection one week from now.
