Sunday of the Myrrh-Bearing Women

About the beginning of His thirty-second year, when the Lord Jesus was going throughout Galilee, preaching and working miracles, many women who had received of His beneficence left their own homeland and from then on followed after Him. They ministered unto Him out of their own possessions, even until His crucifixion and entombment; and afterwards, neither losing faith in Him after His death, nor fearing the wrath of the Jewish rulers, they came to the sepulchre, bearing the myrrh-oils they had prepared to annoint His body. It is because of the myrrh-oils, that these God-loving women brought to the tomb of Jesus that they are called the Myrrh-bearers. Of those whose names are known are the following: first of all, the most holy Virgin Mary, who in Matthew 27:56 and Mark 15:40 is called "the mother of James and Joses" (these are the sons of Joseph by a previous marriage, and she was therefore their step-mother); Mary Magdalene (celebrated July 22); Mary, the wife of Clopas; Joanna, wife of Chouza, a steward of Herod Antipas; Salome, the mother of the sons of Zebedee, Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus; and Susanna. As for the names of the rest of them, the evangelists have kept silence (Matt 27:55-56; 28:1-10. Mark 15:40-41. Luke 8:1-3; 23:55-24:11, 22-24. John 19:25; 20:11-18. Acts 1:14).

Together with them we celebrate also the secret disciples of the Saviour, Joseph and Nicodemus. Of these, Nicodemus was probably a Jerusalemite, a prominent leader among the Jews and of the order of the Pharisees, learned in the Law and instructed in the Holy Scriptures. He had believed in Christ when, at the beginning of our Saviour's preaching of salvation, he came to Him by night. Furthermore, he brought some one hundred pounds of myrrh-oils and an aromatic mixture of aloes and spices out of reverence and love for the divine Teacher (John 19:39). Joseph, who was from the city of Arimathea, was a wealthy and noble man, and one of the counsellors who were in Jerusalem. He went boldly unto Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus, and together with Nicodemus he gave Him burial. Since time did not permit the preparation of another tomb, he placed the Lord's body in his own tomb which was hewn out of rock, as the Evangelist says (Matt. 27:60).

James the Apostle and brother of St. John the Theologian

James was one of the Twelve, like his brother John (celebrated on Sept. 26), whom the Lord called "Sons of Thunder," because they became great preachers and because of their profound theology. It was the Saint's boldness in preaching the Gospel that Herod Agrippa, the son of Aristobulus and grandson of Herod the Great, could not endure, and so he took him into custody during the days of the Passover, and slew him with the sword (Acts 12: 1-2); and thus he drank the cup of which the Saviour had spoken to him prophetically (Matt. 20:23). As for Herod, the following year he went down to Caesarea, and, as the Acts of the Apostles records: "Upon a set day, Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration" to the elders of Tyre and Sidon; and the flatterers that surrounded him "gave a shout, saying, 'it is the voice of a god, and not of a man.' And immediately an Angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory; and like his grandfather (see Dec. 29) "he was eaten of worms and gave up the spirit" (Acts 12:21-23)

Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. Sunday's Sermon

ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ ΤΩΝ ΜΥΡΟΦΟΡΩΝ

 Αδελφοί  μου,

 Σήμερα η αγία μας Εκκλησία έχει ορίσει να γιορτάζουμε την μνήμη των μυροφόρων γυναικών, και εκείνων που ενήργησαν την Ταφή του Κυρίου μας, των κρυφών μαθητών Του του Ιωσήφ και του Νικόδημου.

 Εάν προσέξουμε τα ιερά κείμενα θα δούμε ότι σε αντίθεση με τους άνδρες μαθητές τις Μυροφόρες γυναίκες χαρακτηρίζουν δύο πράγματα, μία αδιάκοπη υπακοή στο Διδάσκαλό τους , Τον Κύριο , και ένας ηρωϊσμός , μία ανδρεία. Πού βλέπουμε την υπακοή; Οι ευαγγελιστές μας λένε ότι οι γυναίκες Τον ακολούθησαν από την Γαλιλαία “αι συνακολουθήσασαι αυτόν από της Γαλιλαιας ”. Μπαίνουν μαζί Του στα Ιεροσόλυμα, παρακολουθούν όσα συμβαίνουν εκεί, Τον συνοδευουν όταν σέρνει τον Σταυρό προς τον Γολγοθά, μένουν εκεί μαζί Του όταν πεθαίνει και τέλος παρακολουθούν τους δύο κρυφούς μαθητές στην βιαστική λόγω της επερχόμενης αργίας του Σαββάτου ταφή του Χριστού χωρίς όμως να συμμετέχουν – ο ευαγγελιστής Λουκάς μας λέει ότι είναι “κατακολουθήσασαι”. Τότε αποφασίζουν να ολοκληρώσουν την κηδεία του Διδασκάλου τους, πηγαίνουν και αγοράζουν αρώματα γιά να περιποιηθούν τον νεκρό Χριστό και κατόπιν – όπως μας λένε οι ευαγγελιστές- “ ησύχασαν κατά την εντολήν ”.

 Εδώ αξίζει να σταθούμε και να αναλογισθούμε τη σημασία αυτής της φράσης. Που σημαίνει ότι οι γυναίκες αυτές υπήκουσαν στο νόμο που τους υπαγόρευε την αργία του Σαββάτου δίχως να συνειδητοποιούν ότι ο Κύριος του νόμου –αυτός που είχε δώσει την εντολή γία το Σάββατο- ήταν αυτός ο νεκρός που βρισκόταν μέσα στον τάφο. Ετσι και αυτές φαίνεται ότι ενόμιζαν , όπως και πολλοί άλλοι , ότι  αυτός ο νεκρός ήταν κάποιος πολύ σπουδαίος μπροστα στο Θεό αλλά όχι ο ίδιος ο Θεός. Δεν μπορούσαν να κατανοήσουν ακόμη το μέγα μυστήριο της κενώσεως του Χριστού.

Το δεύτερο χαρακτηριστικό των μυροφόρων είναι η ανδρεία. Ακολουθούν ακόμη κάποιον που κείτεται νικημένος και νεκρός, κάποιον τον οποίο είχαν φτύσει και είχαν περιγελάσει όλοι, κάποιον που έχει καταδικάσει σε επονείδιστο θάνατο το ιουδαϊκό ιερατείο και η τότε άρχουσα τάξη, κάποιον που εξευτελίστηκε μπροστά στα μάτια του λαού σαν αδύναμος και διαψευσμένος. Η ανδρεία τους είναι τόση που τις κάνει να αντιμάχονται με τη λογική τους που τους έλεγε ότι στο μνήμα του Χριστού υπάρχει η πέτρα που φράζει την είσοδο και είναι πολύ βαρειά γι’αυτές, υπάρχει η φρουρά που τοποθετήθηκε από τους αρχιερείς. Αγαπητοί μου σ’αυτό το σημείο δεν μπορούμε να αποφύγουμε να κάνουμε μία σύντομη σύγκριση ανάμεσα στη στάση των μυροφόρων γυναικών και στη στάση των μαθητών.Την μεν στάση των μυροφόρων τη διακρίνει η υπακοή προς τις εντολές, και η μέχρις ηρωϊσμού αφοσίωση  στο καθήκον να υπηρετήσουν έναν άνθρωπο ως το τέλος. Αντίθετα οι μαθητές κατά τη διάρκεια του Πάθους του Κυρίου ειναι γεμάτοι εξωτερικές και εσωτερικές συγκρούσεις. Συγκρούονται με τους Ιουδαίους όπως ο Πέτρος και επειδή φοβούνται τους ηγέτες τους και τις ρωμαϊκές αρχές κρύβονται. Συγκρούονται και με τον εαυτό τους. Αναρωτιούνται αν μετά από όλα αυτά μπορούν να εξακολουθήσουν να πιστεύουν ότι ο Ιησούς είναι ο Μεσσίας. Είναι πληγωμένοι από τη θλίψη και αισθάνονται ντροπιασμένοι, επειδή διαψεύστηκαν οι ελπίδες τους.

 Προξενεί  απορία γιατί η πρώτη εμφάνιση του νικητή του θανάτου και του διαβόλου Κυρίου μας έγινε στις γυναίκες και όχι στους μαθητές Του. Σύμφωνα με τον Αγ. Γρηγόριο τον Παλαμά η ανάσταση του Χριστού είναι η  ανανέωση της ανθρωπίνης φύσεως και η επανέλευση του Αδάμ προς την αθάνατη ζωή.

Οπως λοιπόν τον Αδάμ δεν τον είδε κανείς κατά την δημιουργία του, αλλά μετά την δημιουργία του τον είδε πρώτη η Εύα μετά την δική της δημιουργία, έτσι και τώρα τον νέο Αδάμ τον Χριστό, δεν τον είδε κανείς όταν αναστήθηκε. Μετά όμως την ανάστασή Του τον είδε πρώτη γυναίκα.  Υπάρχει και μία άλλη πατερική ερμηνεία που συσχετίζει την Εύα και τις Μυροφόρες . Η γυναίκα (η Εύα) αφού συνομίλησε με το πονηρό πνεύμα , έπεσε και έφερε το μύνημα της πτώσεως στον άνδρα (Αδάμ). Τώρα οι Μυροφόρες γυναίκες αφού συνομίλησαν με τον Αγγελο και κατόπιν  είδαν τον Χριστό, έφεραν το μύνημα της Αναστάσεως στους άνδρες–μαθητές. Ετσι έχουμε την αποκατάσταση της γυναικείας φύσεως και καταργείται η απόδοση ευθύνης  στην γυναίκα γιά την πτώση.

Ο Κύριός μας με την πρώτη Του εμφάνιση που έκανε στις μυροφόρες τίμησε την αρετή της ανδρείας. Οι Αγιοι Πατέρες λέγουν ότι η ανδρεία είναι μία από τις τέσσερις μεγάλες αρετές ( φρόνηση, σωφροσύνη, ανδρεία, δικαιοσύνη ) και είναι απαραίτητη γιά την συνάντηση με τον Θεό. Η ανδρεία γεννάται από την πίστη στο Θεό, την αγάπη σ’Αυτόν και την ελπίδα στο έλεός Του. Αυτά τα διαθέτει εκείνος που προχωράει με την καρδιά και όχι με την ψυχρή λογική. Η λογική υπολογίζει και δειλιά, όπως έγινε με τους Αποστόλους. Η καρδιά αγαπά και προχωρεί. Η ανδρεία είναι απαραιτητη στον αγώνα εναντίον των παθών μας μας βοηθάει να υπομένουμε σε κάθε έργο αγαθό γιά να νικούμε τα πάθη της  ψυχής και του σώματος. Η έλλειψη της ανδρείας στον πιστό έχει σαν αποτέλεσμα δύο μεγάλες κακίες. Την θρασύτητα που στρέφεται εναντίον του πλησίον μας και την δειλία που οδηγεί στην απώλεια. Διότι η δειλή ψυχή συγχύζεται, απελπίζεται και τελικά καταστρέφεται.

Αδερφοί μου πρέπει να προσευχόμαστε ώστε να αξιωθούμε κι εμεις στη ζωή μας να αποκτήσουμε το προνόμιο να γίνουμε μυροφόροι Χριστού. Σύμφωνα με τον Αγιο Νικήτα το Στηθάτο Μυροφόροι είναι εκείνοι οι άνθρωποι που καθαρίσθηκαν με τον λόγο των ευαγγελικών εντολών και η ψυχή τους είναι άκακη και γονιμώτατη στις αρετές, όλοι εκείνοι που ζούν μυστηριακά μέσα στην εκκλησία. Αυτοί δεν κρατούν απλα στα χέρια τους τα μύρα, αλλά έχουν μέσα στην καρδιά τους το μύρο το ακένωτο τον Χριστό.

 THE MYRRH BEARERS

Today our holy Church established that we honor the memory of the Holy Myrrh bearing women and of the two informal Disciples Necodemus and Joseph of Arymatthea. The Evangelists tell us that the women were those who followed the Lord’s Mother and stood beside her on the trip from Galilee to Jerusalem, during Christ’s trial, they walked along with Him when He carried the cross on the path to Golgotha, and they stayed with Him through his last moments. Finally they stood apart watching the two informal disciples hastily burry Him because of the forthcoming Sabbath observance, but they did not participate in it – Luke tells us that they were distantly observing. Then they decided to put the last touches on their Master’s traditional burial ritual and they rushed out to buy perfumes to anoint Christ’s body, and later as the Evangelists tell us “they rested according to the command ”, waiting for the day’s dawn.

The myrrh bearing women obeyed the Law that imposed the Sabbath to the Jewish people without realizing that the Ruler of the Law – The One who had given the command for the Sabbath – was  the Man lying dead inside the Tomb. They too, like many other people of their epoch were thinking that this dead Man was someone of great importance in front of God but not God himself. They were not yet in a position to understand the great Mystery of the self-emptying of God. Nevertheless, when the Sabbath was over they continued with their plan to honor Him and they rushed to the Tomb.  Only one among them knew differently, the one who had witnessed His Immaculate Conception inside her womb, His Holy Mother. Saint Gregory Palamas after comparing the writings of the evangelists, concludes that the first one to visit the tomb of her Son was Virgin Mary. She watched the powerful earthquake and she saw the brightly clad Angel opening the tomb.

 “It seems to me” says Saint Gregory, “that the life-bearing tomb was opened first for her sake (because everything in heaven above and on earth below was opened first for her, and through her for us) and that the angel shone like lightning on her account. The angel who announced the Good news was surely Gabriel himself. For when he who had originally said to her “Fear not Mary for you have found favour with God”, saw her hastening to the tomb, he made speed now to come down and greet the ever Virgin once more with the same words to announce the Good News, that He who had been born of her without seed had risen from the dead.”

According to St. Gregory Palamas again, the Resurrection of Christ is the renovation of human nature and Adam’s come back towards eternal life. Just as Adam was not seen by anyone during his creation and the first one to see him was Eva after her own creation, the new Adam, Christ, was not seen by anyone when He was resurrected. After His resurrection He was seen first by a woman.

There exists also another interpretation from the Fathers, which draws a comparison between Eva and the myrrh bearers.  After Eva’s dialogue with the devil she fell and brought the message of the fall to Adam. Now the myrrh bearers after their dialogue with the Angel and their encounter with the resurrected Christ are bringing the message of the Resurrection to the Disciples. In this way our Lord has redeemed the female nature and terminated the burden the female gender was carrying for the Fall of Man.

The myrrh bearing women were characterized by their bravery. They still kept following someone who was lying defeated and dead, someone that had been spat upon and mocked upon, someone condemned to death by the priests and the Pharisees, someone who had been ridiculed in front of the people for being weak and unable to come through with his promises. Their bravery opposed their logic that was telling them that in Christ’s tomb there was a huge stone blocking the entrance and which was very heavy for them to move. There were also guards who had been placed there by the Archpriests to deter anyone wanting to remove the holy body of Christ.

Christ our Lord by appearing first to the myrrh bearers honored the christian virtue of bravery. The Holy Fathers claim that bravery is one of the four great virtues (wisdom, mindfulness, bravery, justice) and is necessary for our encounter with God. Bravery is born from faith in God, love in Him, and hope in His mercy. These are virtues that are held by those who act through their heart and not through cold logic. Rationale is insightful but cowardly, whereas the human heart loves and is not afraid. Bravery is necessary for our struggle against our transgressions and helps us endure all the difficulties we have to go through to overcome the wrongdoing of our soul and body. For the faithful the lack of bravery results in two important spiritual evils. Impudence, which turns us against our brothers, and cowardliness that leads to loss. A cowardly soul becomes confused and hopeless and in the in end is devastated.

Dear Brothers and sisters,

Our Lord’s Resurrection is the renovation of the human race. It is our restoration to eternal life. Listening to the call of our Savior, we must labour hard to become brave in our faith and obedient to His teachings in order to obtain the blessing and privilege of becoming our Lord’s myrrh bearers. Because according to St. Nikitas Stithatos, myrrh bearers are those who are purified with the Water of the Evangelical orders and their soul is innocent and prolific in virtues. It encompasses all those who live the Sacraments inside the Church. These people don’t simply hold in their hands the myrrh, but they nurture inside their hearts the endless myrrh known as Christ.
