Fr. John's Message

Dear St. Andrew Families,

The Hellenic Afternoon School is preparing for the next school year. Our programs focus on teaching the Greek Language, music, dance, and culture. In addition to Greek School we will offer MAZI (ages 1-3), adult language classes, and dance programs for young, GOYA age, and adult students.

Please assist us in planning for next year by registering early. Prompt enrollment will ensure you the best rates. Forms may be emailed to the office, to salomi@optonline.net, or brought to the church office. Your registration will not be complete until payment is either sent to or delivered to the church office and all prior fees (including Stewardship) have been settled. In addition, kindly provide your current email and phone numbers so we can keep an updated file of emergency contact information. Your email will also allow us to keep you updated on HAS, dance, and MAZI, and PTA happenings. It will not be shared or used for any other purposes. The 2018-2019 calendar is attached to this registration form. Please note the dates for the Sunday assembly’s and end of the year graduation program. All students will be expected to attend all scheduled events.

Registration/Fee Policy:

Prior to Registration, the 2017 tuition, past Stewardship and fees must be paid in full.

  •  A 2018 Stewardship Commitment Card must be submitted prior to or at time of registration.

a.      For Stewards, a minimum Stewardship Pledge of $500 (with $375 paid-to-date at the time of Registration) is required   - - OR - -

b.      For Non-Stewards, a $500 fee must be paid in full at the time of Registration.

  • The full 2018 Stewardship pledge must be fulfilled by December 31st 2018.
  • Each additional child registered will receive a 10% discount on their tuition.
  • PTA forms must be submitted and paid in addition to the regular tuition.

If you experience financial difficulties as a result of these policies, please arrange a meeting with Father John to discuss in confidence eligibility for a waiver or alternate payment arrangements.

All St. Andrew Parishioners with a 2018 Stewardship Commitment Card of $2,000 and above that have paid $1,000 at the time of Registration will be entitled to One Free Tuition for the 2018-19 school year with a 10% discount for each additional child registered. All stewardship matters are confidential. Please contact office for more information.

Unfortunately, Stewardship commitments no longer permit us to subsidize Greek School operations.  To fulfill the yearly Parish Budget it costs Saint Andrew an average of about $1800 per family, forcing us to conduct numerous fundraisers to the detriment of outreach and ministry activities central to our Christian mission.  We would like to thank you for your support of our programs and look forward to hearing from everyone soon!

In Christ,

The Education Committee

In the Hospital? Home-Bound?

Please let the Church Office know!  In today’s age of information privacy, churches are not notified when parishioners are admitted to hospitals, nursing homes or other care facilities. Both those facilities and your church depend on having the church notified by a friends or family member so pastoral care and outreach can be offered. The same goes for those homebound. If you or any of your loved ones are in any of these situations, please contact the Church Office at 973-584-0388  to request a visit from our priest Fr. John Theodosion or our new and wonderful Visitation Ministry. Also, if you are interested in helping reach out to fellow parishioners in those situations, please contact the office info@standrewgonj.org

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal First Mode

Let us worship the Word, O ye faithful, praising Him that with the Father and the Spirit is co-beginningless God, Who was born of a pure Virgin that we all be saved; for He was pleased to mount the Cross in the flesh that He assumed, accepting thus to endure death. And by His glorious rising, He also willed to resurrect the dead.

Apolytikion for Martyr Mammas in the Fourth Mode

Thy Martyr, O Lord, in his courageous contest for Thee received the prize of the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since he possessed Thy strength, he cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by his prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

In your holy birth, Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna were rid of the shame of childlessness; Adam and Eve of the corruption of death. And so your people, free of the guilt of their sins, celebrate crying: "The barren one gives birth to the Theotokos, who nourishes our life."

Mammas the Martyr

Saint Mammas was from Gangra of Paphlagonia. He was born in prison, where his parents were suffering for Christ's sake and ended their lives. He was named Mammas because, after he had long remained without speaking, he addressed his foster mother Ammia as "mamma." He contested for Christ about the year 275.

The Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary

According to the ancient tradition of the Church, the Theotokos was born of barren and aged parents, Joachim and Anna, about the year 16 or 17 before the birth of Christ. Joachim was descended from the royal line of David, of the tribe of Judah. Anna was of the priestly tribe of Levi, a daughter of the priest Matthan and Mary, his wife.

Severian the Martyr of Sebastia

Saint Severian, a senator from Sebastia, was both an illustrious man of wealth and a fearless Christian. Because he encouraged the holy Forty Martyrs of Sebastia to stand fast in their confession, he was given over to terrible torments, and received his own crown during the reign of Licinius and Lysius the Duke, about the year 315.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Matins Gospel Reading

Third Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Mark 16:9-20

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.

After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.

Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.

Third Orthros Gospel

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal First Mode. Psalm 11.7,1.
You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us.
Verse: Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 1:21-24; 2:1-4.

Brethren, it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

But I call God to witness against me - it was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. For I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.

Plagal First Mode.

Gospel Reading

14th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 22:2-14

The Lord said this parable, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.' But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.' And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.

But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.' For many are called, but few are chosen."

14th Sunday of Matthew

Wisdom of the Fathers

For unto Christ he would pass all on, saying, "He must increase, I must decrease;" by the Son Himself again, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you;" ... But not by words only, but also by actions did He bid them.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 69 on Matthew 22, 4th Century
