Ecclesiastical New Year 2018

The Very Reverend and Reverend Clergy Honorable Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Esteemed Members of the Metropolitan Council, Esteemed Members of the Parish Councils, Philoptochos Sisterhood, Faculty and Students of the Catechetical and Greek Afternoon Schools, Directors and Participants of all Youth Organizations, and all devout Orthodox Christians of the Greek Orthodox Communities of our Holy Metropolis of New Jersey

My Beloved,

We see in Holy Scripture, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven” (Eccl. 3:1). Today we recall an important celebration in the life of the Church – the Ecclesiastical New Year (the Indiction). The Indiction serves as an opportunity for a new beginning as we all engage in our spiritual struggle for perfection. It gives us an occasion to reflect on our spiritual progress and that which allows us to come closer to Christ such as our prayerfulness, love, charity, and dedication to our Lord. It also gives us an opportunity to introspectively look at our shortcomings as we strive to commit ourselves more to God and less towards these spiritual inadequacies which draw us away from Him. Thus, we come to recognize this most important time of year as a time of personal renewal so that we may better prepare ourselves for participating in the communal life of the Body of Christ, that is, the Church.

Our participation in the communal life of the Church is of paramount importance since it is an image of our participation in the Kingdom of God. Therefore, our commitment and devotion to Christ and His Church cannot be seen as merely an obligation to be fulfilled, but an opportunity to be an active participant in Heaven. This can be expressed in a variety of ways such as our presence in the divine services, our support of parish ministries, our active engagement with the needy, and our unceasing efforts to build the body of Christ through our own words and deeds both inside and outside the confines of the church building.

In today’s social climate, it can be easy to be apathetic towards the Church, believing that it is always someone else’s responsibility to accomplish the vital work that is needed for our parishes to function. Many people believe that it is acceptable to do the bare minimum for the Church or to give the bare minimum to the Church in order for our parishes to get by, but this
perspective is flawed. We should never be content in how much work or offer to the Church because Christ has always done more for us than we could ever imagine. We should never remain complacent about our ministries because there are always opportunities to improve our ministries so that we may better serve each other and our fellow man. We should never become apathetic so as to think “someone else will do the work of the Church, so I do not have to”. The reality is that every one of us has a responsibility for the success of each of our parishes, not just to the point that they may be sustained, but to the point that they should grow and flourish in success. This must be accomplished through every parishioner according to the extent of their personal abilities so that we may give glory, not to ourselves, but to God.

My beloved children in the Lord, we must strive with all of our ability to offer our time, talent, and treasure to the Church in a way that glorifies God and gives thanksgiving to Him who gives us the gifts and ability to offer back to Him what He has already given to us. We must recognize that giving to the Church or through a Church ministry is the ultimate way in which we actualize our active participation in the Body of Christ and, therefore, in the Kingdom of God. For our successes, let us celebrate together; for our losses, let us mourn together; For our challenges, let us struggle together; and for our difficulties, let us “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the Law of Christ” (Gal. 6:2). It is my sincerest hope and prayer that as we embark on this new ecclesiastical year together, that we grow in faith and dedication to our Lord, to the Church He established, to each other, and to our neighbors. Please let the Church Office know! In today’s age of information privacy, churches are not notified when parishioners are admitted to hospitals, nursing homes or other care facilities. Both those facilities and your church depend on having the church notified by a friends or family member so pastoral care and outreach can be offered. The same goes for those homebound. Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal (me) Your servant from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ. The Holy & Righteous Ancestors of God, Joachim and Anna

Today, the day following the Nativity of the most holy Theotokos, we celebrate the synaxis of Saints Joachim and Anna, honouring them as her parents.

The Elevation of the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross

Saint Helen, the mother of Saint Constantine the Great, when she was already advanced in years, undertook, in her great piety, the hardships of a journey to Jerusalem in search of the cross, about the year 325. A temple to Aphrodite had been raised up by the Emperor Hadrian upon Golgotha, to defile and cover with oblivion the place where the saving Passion had been suffered. The venerable Helen had the statue of Aphrodite destroyed, and the earth removed, revealing the Tomb of our Lord, and three crosses. Of these, it was believed that one must be that of our Lord, the other two of the thieves crucified with Him; but Saint Helen was at a loss which one might be the Wood of our salvation. At the inspiration of Saint Macarius, Archbishop of Jerusalem, a lady of Jerusalem, who was already at the point of death from a certain disease, was brought to touch the crosses, and as soon as she came near to the Cross of our Lord, she was made perfectly whole. Consequently, the precious Cross was lifted on high by Archbishop Macarius of Jerusalem; as he stood on the ambo, and when the people beheld it, they cried out, "Lord have mercy." It should be noted that after its discovery, a portion of the venerable Cross was taken to Constantinople as a blessing. The rest was left in Jerusalem in the magnificent church built by Saint Helen, until the year 614. At that time, the Persians plundered Palestine and took the Cross to their own country (see Jan. 22, Saint Anastasius the Persian). Late, in the year 628, Emperor Heraclius set out on a military campaign, retrieved the Cross, and after bringing it to Constantinople, himself escorted it back to Jerusalem, where he restored it to its place.

Rest from labour. A Fast is observed today, whatever day of the week it may be.

Euphemia the Great Martyr

Saint Euphemia was from Chalcedon and lived in virginity. According to some, she suffered martyrdom during the reign of Diocletian, in 303; according to others, in 307. Her sacred relics are preserved in the Patriarchate in Constantinople.

And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Οὐδὲ γὰρ οἱ περιτετμημένοι αὐτοὶ νόμον φυλάσσουσιν, ἀλλὰ θέλουσιν ὑμᾶς περιτέμνεσθαι, ἵνα ἐν τῇ ὑμετέρᾳ σαρκὶ καυχήσωνται. Ἐμοὶ δὲ μὴ γένοιτο καυχᾶσθαι εἰ μὴ ἐν τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ· διʼ οὗ ἐμοὶ κόσμος ἐσταύρωται, κἀγὼ τῷ κόσμῳ. Ἐν γὰρ Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ οὔτε περιτομή τι ἰσχύει, οὔτε ἀκροβυστία, ἀλλὰ καινὴ κτίσις. Καὶ ὅσοι τῷ κανόνι τούτῳ στοιχήσουσιν, εἰρήνη ἐπʼ αὐτούς, καὶ ἔλεος, καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰσραὴλ τοῦ θεοῦ. Τοῦ λοιποῦ, κόπους μοι μηδεὶς παρεχέτω· ἐγὼ γὰρ τὰ στίγματα τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ ἐν τῷ σώματί μου βαστάζω. Ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μετὰ τοῦ πνεύματος ὑμῶν, ἀδελφοί. Ἀμήν.

The Reading is from John 3:13-17

The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."

Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος· καὶ οὐδεὶς ἀναβέβηκεν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εἰ μὴ ὁ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβάς, ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὁ ὤν ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ. καὶ καθὼς Μωϋσῆς ὕψωσε τὸν ὄφιν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, οὕτως ὑψωθῆναι δεῖ τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν μὴ ἀπόληται ἀλλ' ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον.
