ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP SPECIAL TRAY

With the academic year having recently begun, many of our young adults have left the loving embrace of their parents and now find themselves away from home and away from their church communities which have nurtured them in the faith. The ministry of Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) is a Pan-Orthodox program which provides opportunities for worship, fellowship and community service for our Orthodox college students and is vital resource to the over 40,000 Orthodox Christian College students throughout the United States.

Our young people will encounter many worldly influences that will challenge their faith, their morals and their futures. Through OCF, Orthodox chaplains and spiritual advisors can help our young adults navigate through these critical years, keeping them connected to their faith while developing friendships with other Orthodox Christians with whom they share common values and beliefs.

This Sunday, October 6, 2019, His Eminence, Metropolitan Gerasimos is asking all parishes to pass a special tray in support of the ministry of OCF. Checks should be made payable to OCF.

PLATYTERA BLESSING - OCTOBER 27, 2019

With Thankful Hearts to Mr. & Mrs. George Marcus and family

Please join us during liturgy on Sunday, October 27, 2019, for the blessing of the Platytera featured in our altar, in memory of the beloved mother and sister of Mr. George Marcus. This new addition is a result of the generous contribution made by the George Marcus family in completing our Community Center mortgage.  This generous act has allowed our parish to establish the Capital Expenditure Fund, where funds earmarked for the Community Center mortgage have been placed.  The "Platytera Ton Ouranon" or “More Spacious Than the Heavens,” is an icon of the Theotokos facing worshippers directly, with her hands in the “orans” position with the image of Christ as a child in front of her.

Please join us following liturgy for refreshments and celebrating OXI Day.

STS. PETER AND PAUL MISSIONS MINISTRY

We are excited to announce that a total of 690 students are currently in attendance at St Ignatius School in India and the list is growing day by day.  The first floor is now ready but a lot of work still remains to complete the rest of the structure and fill it with the 2000 students it will one day educate.  Although the final figures are not yet in for the physics, chemistry and biology labs, Sister Nektaria reports that $300,000 is now due and could complete the project. Compared to how far the construction has come, these costs are minimal.  With your help we can do this!

To find out more about Sister Nektaria’s Mission in India and to support this cause, please check out www.fili-inc.com and watch the video at www.ekotafilm.com, or follow our Saints Peter and Paul Missions Ministry Facebook page.  You can help by sending a check to Sts. Peter & Paul Missions Ministry c/o St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, or by contacting Maria Aji (408) 425-6967.  All contributions are tax-deductible.

The Holy and Glorious Apostle Thomas

The name Thomas means, "twin." He was one of the Twelve, a Galilean by birth. Sophroneus (not the famous Patriarch of Jerusalem [7th Century, celebrated March 11], but a friend of Jerome's), quoted also by Jerome, says that Saint Thomas preached to the Parthians, Pesians, Medes, Hyrcanians, Bactrians, and neighbouring nations. According to Heracleon, the Apostle died a natural death; according to other accounts, he was martyred at Meliapur His tomb was known by Saint John Chrysostom to be at Edessa in Syria, to which city his holy relics may have been translated from India in the fourth century.

Fifth Orthros Gospel
The Reading is from Luke 24:13-35

At that time, two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, "What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk?" And they stood still looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" And he said to them, "What things?" And they said to him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; and they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but him they did not see." And he said to them, "O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He appeared to be going further, but they constrained him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent." So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, "Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?" And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them, who said, "The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1.
The Lord will give strength to his people.
Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:1-10.

Brethren, working together with him, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

Gospel Reading

3rd Sunday of Luke

3rd Sunday of Luke
The Reading is from Luke 7:11-16

At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

Wisdom of the Fathers

That dead man was being buried, and many friends were conducting him to his tomb. But there meets him Christ, the Life and Resurrection, for He is the destroyer of death and of corruption; He it is "in Whom we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28); He it is Who has restored the nature of man to that which it originally was; and has set free our death-fraught flesh from the bonds of death.
St. Cyril of Alexandria
Commentary on the Gospel of St. Luke, Homily 36.42, p. 153., 5th Century

The virgin's son met the widow's son. He became like a sponge for her tears and as life for the death of her son. Death turned about in its den and turned its back on the victorious one.
St. Ephrem the Syrian
Commentary on Tatian's Diatessaron, 6.23. (Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. vol. 3: Luke, Intervarsity Press)

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Mode

By means of Your Cross, O Lord, You abolished death. * To the robber You opened Paradise. * The lamentation of the myrrhbearing women You transformed, * and You gave Your Apostles the order to proclaim to all * that You had risen, O Christ our God, * and granted the world Your great mercy.

Apolytikion for Apostle Thomas in the 3rd Mode

O Holy Apostle Thomas, intercede with the merciful God that He grant unto our souls forgiveness of offences.

Seasonal Kontakion in the 2nd Mode

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.
