The Holy and Glorious Apostle Thomas

The name Thomas means, "twin." He was one of the Twelve, a Galilean by birth. Sophroneus (not the famous Patriarch of Jerusalem [7th Century, celebrated March 11], but a friend of Jerome's), quoted also by Jerome, says that Saint Thomas preached to the Parthians, Pesians, Medes, Hyrcanians, Bactrians, and neighbouring nations. According to Heracleon, the Apostle died a natural death; according to other accounts, he was martyred at Meliapur His tomb was known by Saint John Chrysostom to be at Edessa in Syria, to which city his holy relics may have been translated from India in the fourth century.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:1-10.

Brethren, working together with him, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

This Week’s Sermon

“Do unto others”

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ 

            Today’s gospel teaches us something that we have been told from our youngest age.

 “Do unto others as you wish others do to you”. This is an expression that sometimes we use very casually without reflecting upon its deeper meaning.

  Sometimes we use it without finishing the sentence. Do unto others…  We assume people should know the rest because it is such a common phrase. 

  What should we do on to others? If we look at this from this perspective we could come up with all kinds of things that we think is appropriate to do unto others.

  Most of the time unfortunately we do things to others we would not want to be done to us. Sometimes even good things that we do for others we would not want others to do for us.

 Why?

The answer is very simple. Freedom is the most precious thing for us humans. We would rebel against anything and anyone if they dared to take our freedom away from us. We would even rebel if they were doing good things for us but were limiting our ability to choose for ourselves.

  Freedom has been the core of the dreams of all societies. The example of the Israelites in Egypt is a classic example.

  They left their livelihood that they had in Egypt, not for a better life, but for freedom. They did not migrate to another country but they headed towards the desert.

  They embraced the unknown because they preferred freedom over security. They preferred freedom with all its consequences.

  They chose responsibility, vulnerability, danger, fear of the unknown.

Dear brothers and sisters, they were not naïve to choose all of these things just because they wanted to make their own decisions for themselves. In the desert there were not too many choices anyways.

  The best outcome of the freedom for them was their relationship with God. That is one of the best outcomes of freedom for us. True relationships are based on freedom.

“Do unto others” is the deepest form of relationship and it is most beneficial when it is based on freedom. After all, it is our relationship with one another that determines the relationship between God and us.

            If God requires people to be free to relate to them then the best gift we can give to our neighbor is to let them be free. The best we can give them is the truth because the Truth sets us free. 

  Even Love can be binding or intimidating, but the Truth sets us free. In fact we can choke people with our overbearing Love. This is where the expression comes handy. “Love me less but let me be free”.  I would say give your neighbor a love that comes out of Truth.

"Κάνε σε άλλους"

Αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδελφές εν Χριστώ

            Το σημερινό ευαγγέλιο μας διδάσκει κάτι που μας είπαν από τη νεότερη ηλικία μας.

            "Κάνε σε άλλους ό,τι επιθυμείς να κάνουν και οι άλλοι σε σένα". Αυτή είναι μια έκφραση, που μερικές φορές χρησιμοποιούμε πολύ άνετα χωρίς να αναλογιζόμαστε το βαθύτερο νόημά της.

  Μερικές φορές τη χρησιμοποιούμε χωρίς να ολοκληρώνουμε την πρόταση. Κάνε σε άλλους ... Υποθέτουμε ότι οι άνθρωποι πρέπει να γνωρίζουν την υπόλοιπη, επειδή είναι μια τόσο κοινή φράση.

Τι πρέπει να κάνουμε σε άλλους; Εάν το εξετάσουμε από αυτή την προοπτική, θα μπορούσαμε να βρούμε όλα τα είδη των πράξεων που πιστεύουμε ότι είναι σκόπιμο να κάνουμε στους άλλους.

  Τις περισσότερες φορές δυστυχώς κάνουμε πράγματα σε άλλους, που δεν θα θέλαμε να κάνουν αυτοί  σε μας. Μερικές φορές ακόμη και καλά πράγματα, που κάνουμε για τους άλλους, δεν θα θέλαμε να κάνουν άλλοι για εμας.

Γιατί;

Η απάντηση είναι πολύ απλή. Η ελευθερία είναι το πιο πολύτιμο πράγμα για εμάς τους ανθρώπους. Θα επαναστατούσαμε ενάντια σε  οτιδήποτε και σε οποιονδήποτε, αν τολμούσε να μας αφαιρέσει την ελευθερία μας. Θα επαναστατούσαμε ακόμη και αν έκαναν καλά πράγματα για εμάς, αλλά περιόριζαν την ικανότητά μας να επιλέγουμε για τον εαυτό μας.

   Η ελευθερία αποτελεί τον πυρήνα των ονείρων όλων των κοινωνιών. Η ζωή των Ισραηλιτών στην Αίγυπτο είναι ένα κλασικό παράδειγμα.

            Άφησαν το βιος τους, που είχαν στην Αίγυπτο, όχι για μια καλύτερη ζωή, αλλά για ελευθερία. Δεν μετανάστευσαν σε άλλη χώρα, αλλά κατευθύνθηκαν προς την έρημο.

  Αγκάλιασαν το άγνωστο, επειδή προτιμούσαν την ελευθερία έναντι της ασφάλειας. Προτίμησαν την ελευθερία με όλες τις συνέπειές της.

  Επέλεξαν την ευθύνη, τον κίνδυνο, το φόβο του άγνωστου και το να γίνουν ευάλωτοι.

Αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδελφές, δεν ήταν αφελείς να επιλέξουν όλα αυτά απλά επειδή ήθελαν να πάρουν τις δικές τους αποφάσεις για τον εαυτό τους. Στην έρημο δεν υπήρχαν πάρα πολλές επιλογές ούτως ή άλλως.

  Το καλύτερο αποτέλεσμα της ελευθερίας γι 'αυτούς ήταν η σχέση τους με τον Θεό. Αυτό είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα αποτελέσματα της ελευθερίας για εμάς. Οι αληθινές σχέσεις βασίζονται στην ελευθερία.

  Το "κάνε στους άλλους" είναι η βαθύτερη μορφή σχέσης και είναι πολύ ωφέλιμη, όταν βασίζεται στην ελευθερία. Εξάλλου είναι  η σχέση μας μεταξύ μας, που καθορίζει τη σχέση ανάμεσα στον Θεό και σε εμάς.

  Αν ο Θεός απαιτεί από τους ανθρώπους να είναι ελεύθεροι να σχετιστούν μαζί του , τότε το καλύτερο δώρο που μπορούμε να δώσουμε στους γείτονές μας είναι να τους αφήσουμε ελεύθερους. Το καλύτερο που μπορούμε να τους δώσουμε είναι η αλήθεια, διότι η Αλήθεια μας καθιστά ελεύθερους.

  Ακόμη και η Αγάπη μπορεί να είναι δεσμευτική ή εκφοβιστική, αλλά η Αλήθεια μας καθιστά ελεύθερους. Στην πραγματικότητα, μπορούμε να πνίξουμε τους ανθρώπους με την Αγάπη μας. Υπάρχει μια φράση που πιθανώς έχετε ακούσει. "Να με αγαπάς λιγότερο, αλλά άφησέ με να είμαι ελεύθερος". Θα έλεγα να δώσετε στον γείτονά σας, μια αγάπη που βγαίνει από την Αλήθεια.
