From our Pastoral Assistant Stavros

Excerpt from Chapter “Offerings” from the book “Elder Paisios of Mount Athos” by Hieromonk Isaac. Since the first publishing of this book, we have had the glorification of Elder Paisios as a Saint of the Orthodox Church, so we may find newer editions titled “Saint Paisios of Mount Athos.”

He (Saint Paisios) fought against ecumenism and spoke about the magnificence and uniqueness of Orthodoxy, obtaining his information by divine grace within his heart. His life attested to the superiority of Orthodoxy.
Discerningly, he stated: “There’s no need for us to tell Christians who aren’t Orthodox that they’re going to hell or that they’re antichrists; but we also mustn’t tell them that they’ll be saved, because that’s giving them false reassurance, and we’ll be judged for it. We have to give them a good kind of uneasiness- we have to tell them that they’re in error.”
Orthodoxy was extremely important to him, and this is why he didn’t accept the practices of communion or common prayer with non-Orthodox people. “In order for us to pray together with someone,” he stressed, “we must agree on the faith.” He cut off relationships with and avoided seeing clergy who participated in common prayers with heterodox. He didn’t recognize the “sacraments” of the heterodox and advised that those coming to the Orthodox Church should be well-catechized and then baptized.
For a time, together with almost the entire Holy Mountain, he ceased commemoration of Patriarch Athenagoras (of Constantinople) in response to his dangerous overtures toward the Roman Catholics. However, he did it with pain. “I pray,” he once told someone, “for God to take days away from me, and give them to Patriarch Athenagoras, so he can fulfill his repentance.”
.. Without trying to seem like a confessor of the faith, the elder, in his own way, expressed his opposition regarding various matters, speaking to and writing ecclesiastical figures. “The Church,” he would say, “isn’t the ship of each bishop to do with as he pleases.” These reactions of his were accompanied by much prayer and love, not only for the Church, but also for those who were deviating from the faith; and all was the fruit of dispassion, discernment, and enlightenment from above.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal First Tone. Psalm 11.7,1.
You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us.
Verse: Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 12:6-14.

Brethren, having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.

Plagal First Tone.

Gospel Reading

6th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 9:1-8

At that time, getting into a boat Jesus crossed over and came to his own city. And behold, they brought to him a paralytic, lying on his bed; and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven." And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say 'Rise and walk?' But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" he then said to the paralytic -- "Rise, take up your bed and go home." And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

6th Sunday of Matthew

6th Sunday of Matthew

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal First Tone

Let us, the faithful, sing praise and bow down before the Word, who with the Father and Spirit has no beginning or end, of the Virgin, being born for our salvation's sake. For He ascended the Cross in the flesh of mortal man and suffered death by His own choosing. By His glorious Resurrection, those who died are also raised up with Him.

Apolytikion for Proodos of the Holy Cross in the First Tone

Save Oh Lord, save Your people, and bless your inheritance. Grant victory to the faithful over their adversaries and protect Your commonwealth by the power of Your Cross.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Tone

Lifted up on the Cross by Your free will, Christ God, grant mercies to the new commonwealth that bears Your name. Gladden our faithful rulers by Your power, giving them victories over their adversaries. May Your alliance be for them a weapon for peace, an invincible standard.
