Prayer

Because we have no boldness on account of our many sins, entreat the One born of you, O Virgin Mother of God; for a Mother's plea has great force for the kindness of the Master.  Do not despise the supplications of sinners, O all-holy, for he is merciful, and able to save, he who even accepted to suffer for us.

From our Pastoral Assistant Stavros

Excerpt from Chapter “First Epistle- For Beginners” from the book “Epistles- Elder Paisios of Mount Athos”.

"Our Good Lord made the life of man very sweet, in a good sense, the spiritual sense, but some of us turn it to hell with our wretchedness, for we do not rid ourselves of our worldly mentality in order to deal with things spiritually. We then make our life sweet, in the bad sense, and never want to die. As the years go by, the angst increases and our soul is filled with anxiety. We miserable people reach a point many times where we wish to keep our soul inside our one hundred year-old flesh through the use of a serum saying, “life is sweet," and we tremble at death. Whereas, conversely, in someone who is dead to the world and resurrected spiritually there is no anguish, fear and anxiety at all, for he awaits his death with joy since he will abide near Christ and rejoice. And for him to live is also a joy, for he again lives close to Christ, receiving a foretaste of the joy of Paradise while still on earth. Such a man wonders whether there exists greater joy in Paradise than that joy he is experiencing on earth.

This is the sweet life in its true and good sense. Even though true monks realize that what they enjoy in this life is only a sampling of the joy of Paradise, and that in Paradise it will be greater, out of great love for their neighbor they still wish to live on earth in order to help men by their prayers for God’s intervention, that the world may be upheld. Blessed are these monks, and through their prayers may God have mercy on me, who unfortunately am still a poor wretch. I desire very much that the Good God make all monks who follow the Angelic Life worthy of the measure of such monks so that we also may say continually day and night: “Glory to God because I am living; glory to God because I will die.”

.. We monks should thank and praise God day and night for the great honor He granted us when He invited us to His Angelic Rank and offered us all spiritual possibilities to become angels on earth. Bear all these things in mind, my novice brother, and try to achieve the desired goal. Since you have started off well, beware of everything I have mentioned in order to attain a good end. Apart from the young man who owes great gratitude to God, Who gave him the great honor I mentioned, the Angelic Rank, it would also be good if their parents could realize the great honor God gave them as well, Who deigned to become their relative through their child’s calling.”

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Tone. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 15:1-7.

Brethren, we who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves; let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to edify him. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached thee fell on me." For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Plagal Second Tone.

Gospel Reading

7th Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 9:27-35

At that time, as Jesus passed by, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.

As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons."

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

7th Sunday of Matthew

7th Sunday of Matthew

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Tone

When the angelic powers appeared before Your grave, the soldiers guarding it took on the look of death, and standing at Your sepulcher was Mary, there seeking Your pure and spotless Body. Despoiling Hades' armor, You were not stained by his touch. You came forth to meet the Virgin, bestowing eternal life. And You are risen from the dead; glory to you, O Lord!

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Transfiguration in the Grave Tone

Thou wast transfigured on the mountain, O Christ our God, showing to Thy disciples Thy glory as each one could endure. Shine forth Thou on us, who are sinners all, Thy light ever-unending, through the prayers of the Theotokos. Light-bestower, glory be to Thee.

Apolytikion for the Church in the First Tone

As a liberator of prisoners, and as a guardian of the poor, a doctor of the sick, a defender of kings. Trophy bearer, O Great Martyr George. Intercede to Christ our God, and save our souls.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Grave Tone

On the mountain you were transfigured, O Christ our God and your disciples saw as much of your glory as they could hold, that when they shall see you crucified, they would know that you suffered by your own will and would proclaim to all the world that you truly are the splendor of the Father.
