Dean's Message

Frathanasios-3

Immediate Response Required

In today’s Gospel we witness Christ calling His first disciples to follow Him. These humble ‘working class’ men were already faithful Jews. As fishermen, they knew hard and about long days. They knew how to put their faith in God to ‘provide’ for their livelihood and fill their nets. They knew that every blessing for God required patience and discipline. All their knowledge prepared them for what was to come next.

As Christ walked by, He said, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” That is where everything changed for these men. “Immediately they left their nets and followed him.” Others, even left their father to finish working in the boat, and followed Christ. Time and again, the response to Jesus Christ calling was immediate! There was no delay. There was no pondering. There was no ‘weighing the pros and cons,’ and they were all rewarded. For those who said, “Let us first go and bury our dead,” Christ said, “Let the dead bury their own dead.” (Matthew 8.22)

These first disciples of Christ were blessed to enter the Kingdom of God, and witness His Power. They witnessed miracle healing and feedings. They even witnessed miracle loads of fish in their nets. All this was to reveal to them the power of God. It was enough to inspire them to leave behind what they knew of ‘how the world worked’ and begin their new lives in Christ.

Today Christ is calling us to follow Him into a new life, a life filled with blessings. Like the life of the first disciples, it isn’t an easy life. It will require hard work and long days. It will require patience and faith, but most of all it requires an immediate response. If we delay, we risk being left behind.

Christ didn’t just call anyone to follow Him. He called everyone to follow Him. Yes, some were called as leaders, but among the leaders Christ also was followed by thousands of others as He went from place to place teaching and preaching. Everyone who followed Him, received the same blessing, no matter what their ‘job’ was in the Church. They all received eternal life and union with God in heaven.

If you are looking for the blessings of God, then be ready to act immediately and follow Him. Don’t just think about Him. Don’t just talk about Him. Follow Him. The first disciples were willing to leave everything they ‘knew’ behind to follow Him. They were rewarded and so will you be rewarded.

Vikentios Livanos

Vikentios_livanos

Greetings in Christ,

In the last week I have made good progress in meeting with the church ministries. On Monday I met with the leaders of Levendia officially for the first time, though I have already been to dance practice. This meeting gave me the opportunity to hear about Levendia from their leaders, where we discussed its historical propensity as a bastion of our cultural heritage and future opportunities for the growth and enrichment of the program, and there-by its participants. Tuesday I met with the head of technology with whom I will be working closely within the immediate future as I familiarize myself with the church website, and explore our opportunities for ministry outreach through internet mediums. As well, The Day Camps Committee met to discuss and plan future Day Camp opportunities, mirroring and expanding upon the strengths of the previously and largely successful Lazarus Saturday youth event. Wednesday I met with the head of the Women's Book Club, where I learned about the existing program which offers a space for women to read, and discuss a variety of topics concerning faith and life as a Christian. Further, we discussed opportunities to grow this ministry in a variety of ways which could prove beneficial to its present and future participants. As well, I met with the GOYA Advisors, who are working diligently to map out the coming academic years’ events, in order to provide a wide array of events that aim to develop and nurture a love for God, through our Orthodox values. In this meeting, the long pre-existing foundations of GOYA were discussed in the light shed by historical values. This provided insight into the effectiveness, and lack thereof in certain practices found across the country. By raising our standards in bettering our community toward our common Christian goal of Theosis, I have confidence that the children and young adults of our community will be constantly placed in a healthy environment for spiritual, communal, and personal growth. As the week continues, I will have met with and toured the Preschool, the Greek School, the BookStore Committee, and Philoptochos. As well, I will have attended my first Philadelphia Men's Breakfast. I look forward to expressing my experiences of these ministries in my next message to the community, on Sunday July 3.

I am pleased to direct the readers of this message to the advertisement posted within this bulletin announcing the newest Day Camp experience to be enjoyed this coming July, 18th - 22nd. For those interested in having their children participate, please find the registration form on our church website: Stnicholastarpon.org/Chariots.

Update: I will be physically absent next Sunday July 3rd, as I am returning to my family home outside of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania for my fathers one year memorial service.

David the Righteous of Thessalonika

Saint David, who was from Thessalonica, lived a most holy and ascetical life. For some years, he took up his dwelling in the branches of an almond tree, exposed to all the elements and extremes of the weather. He reposed in peace during the reign of Saint Justinian the Great, in the sixth century.

Tikhvin
June 26

Appearance of the Icon of Our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos of Tikhvin

According to one tradition, this icon was painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist. It was formerly situated in the famous Church of Blachernae in Constantinople. In 1383, it appeared upon the waters of Lake Ladoga, whence it travelled miraculously through the air to the city of Tikhvin; there, it remained by the River Tikhvinka, and a monastery was built to shelter the icon. In 1613-14 this monastery miraculously withstood the many attacks of the Swedish invaders. In the early twentieth century it was brought to America and was returned to Russia in 2004. The holy icon is renowned for a great many miracles wrought through it by the all-holy Mother of God, especially for the healing of children.

A Prayer for Healing

"Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal me, Your servant, from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ.  Grant me patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health.  Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed.  I pray that You heal me as Your servant and grant me the gift of complete health.  For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen."

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the 1st Mode

Although the stone was sealed by the Jews, and the soldiers guarded Your most pure body, You arose on the third day, O Savior, giving life to the world. For this reason, the heavenly powers cried out to you, O Giver of Life: Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ! Glory to Your kingdom! Glory to Your dispensation, only Lover of Mankind!

Seasonal Kontakion in the 2nd Mode

The protection of Christians unshameable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, do not turn from the prayerful cries of those who are in sin; instead, come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you: Hasten to intercession and speed now to supplication as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

2nd Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 2:10-16

Brethren, glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. All who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

2nd Sunday of Matthew

Gospel Reading

2nd Sunday of Matthew
The Reading is from Matthew 4:18-23

At that time, as Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left their boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

2nd Sunday of Matthew

Wisdom of the Fathers

But mark both their faith, and their obedience. For though they were in the midst of their work (and you know how greedy a thing fishing is), when they heard His command, they delayed not, ... but "they forsook all and followed," ... Because such is the obedience which Christ seeks of us, as that we delay not even a moment of time.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily 14 on Matthew 4, 4th Century

Prayer, fasting, vigil and all other Christian practices, however good they may be in themselves, do not constitute the aim of our Christian life, although they serve as the indispensable means of reaching this end. The true aim of our Christian life consists in the acquisition of the Holy Spirit of God.
St. Seraphim of Sarov
The Acquisition of the Holy Spirit: Chapter 3, The Little Russian Philokalia Vol. 1; Saint Herman of Alaska Brotherhood pg. 79, 19th century
