A Message from Our Parish Council President

Updates on Several Topics from Parish Council President Dean Dalson

Dear Annunciation Community,

This week I’d like to give you updates on several topics:

  • On behalf of Father John, the Parish Council and Stewardship Committee, I want to thank our Stewards for their generosity this year.  We have more pledged Stewards so far this year than we did in total for 2019, and collections are significantly higher than at the same time last year.  Overall, Stewardship covers about 70% of our operating expenses this year, compared to about 59% over the past few years.  Thank you to all for your generosity!
  • However, canceling our OPA festival means we don’t have our next largest source of income after Stewardship.  We have taken advantage of several Federal programs under the CARES Act, including a Payroll Protection Program loan, the majority of which we expect to be forgiven.  Even with the generosity of our Stewards, the Federal programs, and reductions in operating expenses of about $25,000, we project a shortfall at year-end of about $11,000.  We recognize that the economic effects of the Coronavirus impacted many families, and many families have been spared these effects.  We ask that those who can please help us close the projected shortfall by continuing the spirit of Stewardship generosity we have experienced so far this year.
  • It is very heartwarming and comforting to see the Stewardship results, for which we are very thankful in two respects.  First, of course, the immediate financial impact of our Stewards’ generosity to benefit our community.  Second, and more important, is the trend towards Stewardship covering an ever-larger portion of the operating budget.  For many years we talked of the need to reduce our dependence on the OPA festival given the amount of work involved.  We hope that everyone can continue to support Stewardship generously toward the goal of funding the full operating budget, which would allow us to dedicate OPA proceeds to Ministries and longer-term improvements for our community.  With that in mind, our Stewardship program will be more focused on Sustaining Stewardship, where our Stewardship contributions are regular, recurring donations that automatically continue year to year, providing the Church with a steady, reliable flow of donations to pay expenses.  Our new GIVE+ electronic donations platform makes it easy to set up recurring donations through the Church’s website or the GIVE+ application for your phone.
  • The 45th Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress was held last week, the first-ever in a virtual format.  Father John, several Parish Council members, and I attended various parts of the Congress.  I was impressed by the hard work and professionalism of the Clergy and Lay leadership of the Archdiocese. I am pleased to report significant progress against the three priorities Archbishop Elpidophoros outlined at the time of his Enthronement; completion of the Saint Nicholas Shrine, stabilizing Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and addressing the underfunding of the Clergy pension plan.  The virtual format worked very well, and you can access a wide range of materials from the Congress at its website www.clergylaity.org.
  • Finally, we will have our Fall General Assembly on Monday, October 19, at 7:00 PM.  It will be a combination of in-person attendance in the Social Hall (limited to 25 people) and a Zoom videoconference.  The videoconference will have capabilities for you to submit questions and comments.  Please join us in this important General Assembly. The agenda will include an update on our community’s financial condition, the presentation of a draft budget for 2021, and preparations and nominations for the Parish Council elections in December.

Thank you again for your commitment to and generosity towards our Faith and Community.

Respectfully,

Dean Dalson

Parish Council President

Eustathius the Great Martyr, his wife and two children

The holy Martyr Eustathius before his baptism was an illustrious Roman general named Placidas in the days of the Emperor Trajan. While hunting in the country one day, he was converted to the Faith of Christ through the apparition of an uncommonly majestic stag, between whose antlers he saw the Cross of Christ, and through which the Lord spoke to him with a human voice. Upon returning home, he learned that his wife Tatiana had also had a vision in which she was instructed to become a Christian. They sought out the Bishop of the Christians and were baptized, Placidas receiving the name Eustathius, and Tatiana the name Theopiste; their two sons were baptized Agapius and Theopistus. The family was then subjected to such trials as Job endured. Their servants died, all their goods were stolen, and on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem they were scattered abroad, each not even knowing if the others were still alive. By the providence of God, they were united again after many years, and returned to Rome in glory. Nevertheless, when they refused to sacrifice to the idols-a public sacrifice from which no Roman general could be absent-the Emperor Hadrian, who had succeeded Trajan, had them put into a large bronze device in the shape of a bull, which was heated with fire until they died. When their holy bodies were removed, they were found to be without harm. They suffered martyrdom about the year 126.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 27.9,1.
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20.

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Plagal Second Mode.

Gospel Reading

Sunday after Holy Cross
The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

Sunday after Holy Cross

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Mode

Angelic powers were above Thy tomb, and they that guarded Thee became as dead. And Mary stood by the grave seeking Thine immaculate Body. Thou hast despoiled Hades and wast not tried thereby. Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst grant us life. O Thou Who didst arise from the dead, Lord, glory be to Thee.

Apolytikion for Afterfeast of the Holy Cross in the First Mode

Save, O Lord, Thy people and bless Thine inheritance; grant Thou unto the faithful victory over adversaries. And by the power of Thy Cross do Thou preserve Thy commonwealth.

Apolytikion for Martyr Eustathius and His Companions in the Fourth Mode

Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

The Apolytikion of the Annunciation/Evangelismos in the Fourth Mode

Today is the summary of our salvation, and the revelation of the age-old mystery. For the Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announces the good news of grace. Therefore, let us join him, and cry  aloud to the Theotokos: “Rejoice, Maiden full of grace! The Lord is with you.”

Seasonal Kontakion in the Fourth Mode

Lifted up on the Cross by Your free will, Christ God, grant mercies to the new commonwealth that bears Your name. Gladden our faithful rulers by Your power, giving them victories over their adversaries. May Your alliance be for them a weapon for peace, an invincible standard.

Young-at-Heart (60+) Ministry Update

We look forward to reuniting the Young at Heart Members when the time is right. Meanwhile, please stay safe and healthy.

A sincere and heartfelt "Thank You" to Agnes Louridas and Helen Papanicolau for their many years of leadership and commitment in making this ministry a vital part of our community. We hope to continue their energy and enthusiasm.

With gratitude,

Susan Gouris and Maria McNally

“The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; To show that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.” Psalm 92:12

Our Young at Heart ministry provides fellowship and friendship for our mature adults. Each person in the church is vital to the health and growth of the church. The rich experience and seasoned gifts of older Christians are indispensable resources to our congregation. Our church has made a commitment to encourage the Young at Hearts and maintain their involvement in the life of the church. There's a place for you at Annunciation! Ministries need your skills, abilities, and maturity!

The group plans social gatherings that include day excursions, holiday luncheons, and other fun and festive activities throughout the year. The activities are promoted in the   Weekly Bulletin (hard copy on Sunday and E-Bulletin), and mailed to those without an email address, for all those interested, to plan ahead and join in. We invite you to join us in fellowship and fun!

Sunday School teachers: Dust-Off OCMC Mission Lesson Plans and Coin Boxes for the New Church Year

Great Lent is such an important season for us as Orthodox Christians. In addition to the increased prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that we are directed to undertake, it has traditionally been the time for focused education on the Mission work of our Orthodox faith, praying for our OCMC missionaries, and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ using OCMC’s lesson plans and coin boxes.

This year, we were forced to attend services behind our computer screens during Great Lent and Holy Week. Now more than ever, as we begin the new ecclesiastical year, we need to teach our youth about missions and get them involved in this critical ministry!

Please dust off those lesson plans and Coin Boxes we sent you earlier in the year and put them to good use. This year’s lesson plans focus on the life of one of the Church’s great missionary saints – St. Herman of Alaska. In August we celebrated the 50th anniversary of his canonization. In honor of his shining example we ask the following:

  • Teach your youth about St. Herman, using the lesson plans we sent you earlier in the year so that they can follow in his footsteps.
  • Encourage them to fill their Coin Boxes throughout October so that missionaries serving in the world today can offer their loving witness to the Gospel of Christ and our Faith like St. Herman.
  • Submit the gifts collected in the Coin Boxes by October 31st.

Thank you for your efforts in helping to share the Good News of Jesus Christ!

Annunciation Resource Center

Did you know the liturgical year begins and ends with feasts of the Theotokos (her Nativity on September 8 and the Dormition on August 15)? Here are some helpful resources as we begin a new liturgical year:

Seasons of Grace: Reflections on the Orthodox Church Year by Donna Farley, $17.95. Short, insightful reflections that help us find balance as we weave the Great Feasts into the fabric of our lives.

Do Not Judge by Hieromonk Gregorios, $7.95. As we struggle to live according to God’s commandments, we can lose hope and give up. Christ, however, suggested a very simple way for us to please Him and avoid condemnation at the Last Judgment: Do not judge in order not to be judged (Matt. 7:1-2). This slim volume addresses causes & types of criticism, gossip, and passing judgment.

The Story of Mary, the Mother of God by Dorrie Papademetriou, $20. A beautiful picture book that tells the story of the Virgin Mary’s childhood. Inspired by mosaics in the monastery of Chora in Constantinople.

Celebrate the Feasts, children’s music CD by Kh. Gigi Shadid. Stream the CD here to help young children learn the hymns of the Great Feasts or listen to her song about the feasts of Panagia here on YouTube.

Please reach out to us and let us know how we can serve you. Need a gift, an icon or items for your home church? We have them. Since you cannot come to the Resource Center during the pandemic, we will do our best to bring it to you!

You now have the option of paying for your Resource Center items through the Give+ app.
