On Friday, October 12, 2018, we invite all parents/guardians to the Omiros Greek School for the Back-to-School Night. We hope to see each one of you!

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 11:31-33; 12:1-9.

Brethren, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed for ever, knows that I do not lie. At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me, but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands.

I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven -- whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise --whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows -- and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. Though if I wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for I shall be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

Sergius & Bacchus the Great Martyrs of Syria

These holy Martyrs were Romans of high rank in the service of the Emperor Maximian, to whom it was reported that they did not take part in the festivals of the idols. When he called them into his presence, they confessed their Faith in the one God. He had them arrayed in women's clothes and paraded through the streets in mockery. They were afterwards scourged, from which Saint Bacchus died. This was about the year 296. Saint Sergius was then taken to Resapha in Syria, where he was tortured and beheaded. His tomb in Resapha became a very famous shrine, to which pilgrims came from as far away as Western Europe; Resapha was later renamed Sergiopolis in his honour.

Pelagia the Righteous

This Saint was a prominent actress of the city of Antioch, and a pagan, who lived a life of unrestrained prodigality and led many to perdition. Instructed and baptized by a certain bishop named Nonnus (Saint Nonnus is commemorated Nov. 10), she departed for the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem, where she lived as a recluse, feigning to be a eunuch called Pelagia. She lived in such holiness and repentance that within three or four years she was deemed worthy to repose in an odour of sanctity, in the middle of the fifth century. Her tomb on the Mount of Olives has been a place of pilgrimage ever since.

ΣΥΝΑΞΑΡΙΟΝ ΤΩΝ ΑΓΙΩΝ ΣΕΡΓΙΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΒΑΚΧΟΥ

            Οι Άγιοι Σέργιος και Βάκχος υπηρετούσαν στις στρατιωτικές τάξεις του αυτοκράτορα Μαξιμιανού. Τους διέκρινε μεγάλη ανδρεία στα πεδία των μαχών, αλλά και σωφροσύνη στην καθημερινή τους ζωή. Γι' αυτό και ο αυτοκράτορας τους απένειμε τα αξιώματα του πριμικηρίου της σχολής των Kεντηλίων και του σεκουνδουκηρίου, αντίστοιχα.

Όταν έμαθε ότι οι δύο επίλεκτοι στρατιώτες του ήταν χριστιανοί, δεν ήθελε με κανένα τρόπο να το πιστέψει. Για να πεισθεί λοιπόν χειροπιαστά, οργάνωσε τελετές με θυσίες σε ειδωλολατρικό ναό και κάλεσε να παραστούν σ' αυτές οι Σέργιος και Βάκχος. Οι δύο χριστιανοί στρατιώτες αρνήθηκαν και ομολόγησαν το Χριστό με θαρραλέο φρόνημα. Εξοργισμένος τότε ο αυτοκράτορας, διέταξε και τους αφαίρεσαν τα διάσημα των αξιωμάτων τους. Έπειτα, αφού τους ενέπαιξαν και τους διαπόμπευσαν με διάφορους τρόπους, τους έστειλαν σε ένα σκληρό δούκα της Ανατολής, τον Αντίοχο. Αυτός με πρωτοφανή ωμότητα μαστίγωσε μέχρι θανάτου το Βάκχο. Στο δε Σέργιο, επειδή κάποτε τον είχε ευεργετήσει, πρότεινε, αφού αρνηθεί το Χριστό, να του χαρίσει τη ζωή. Η γενναία απάντηση του Σεργίου ήταν τα λόγια του Απ. Παύλου «Ἐμοὶ τὸ ζῆν Χριστὸς καὶ τὸ ἀποθανεὶν κέρδος» (προς Φιλιππησίους, α' 21). Σε μένα, είπε ο Σέργιος, ζωή είναι ο Χριστός. Αλλά και το να πεθάνω είναι κέρδος, διότι έτσι θα ενωθώ πλήρως με το Χριστό. Τότε, ο Αντίοχος αμέσως έδωσε διαταγή και τον αποκεφάλισαν.

Το 547 μ.Χ. ο Αυτοκράτορας Ιουστινιανός ανήγειρε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη λαμπρό ναό προς τιμήν των Αγίων Μαρτύρων Σεργίου και Βάκχου, τον επονομαζόμενο «Μικρή Αγία Σοφία», όπου και κατέθεσε τα Ιερά Λείψανά τους.

Στη Δύση πολλές πόλεις διεκδικούν Λείψανα των Μαρτύρων με πρώτη την Βενετία, όπου Λείψανα αποδιδόμενα σ’ αυτούς φυλάσσονται στο Ναό του Αγίου Πέτρου στο Καστέλλο. Τα Λείψανα αυτά έγιναν αντικείμενο αναγνωρίσεως το 1991 μ.Χ.

Στην Παβία, στη Μονή των Βενεδικτίνων του Αγίου Φίλικος, φυλάσσονται Λείψανα των δύο Μαρτύρων, δωρεά του Αυτοκράτορα Όθωνα Β’. Τα Λείψανα αυτά περιλαμβάνονται στα κειμήλια που έφερε μαζί της στη Δύση η σύζυγός του Βυζαντινή Πριγκίπισσα Θεοφανώ και για τον λόγο αυτό δεν υπάρχουν αμφιβολίες σχετικά με την γνησιότητά τους.

Σύμφωνα με μια άλλη παράδοση το 1152 μ.Χ., κατά την διάρκεια των Σταυροφοριών, ο Κόμης Γοφρέδος ο Ανδεγαβός μετέφερε Λείψανα των Μαρτύρων από την Συρία στα εδάφη του.

Λείψανα των δύο Μαρτύρων φυλάσσονται ακόμη και στο Ναό του Αγίου Μαρτίνου στο Heiligenstadt, όπως μαρτυρεί βούλα του Πάπα Παύλου Β’, του έτους 1469 μ.Χ. Τα Λείψανα αυτά κατά τους Βολλανδιστές μετεφέρθηκαν τον 13ο ή 14ο αιώνα μ.Χ. από την Συρία.

Λείψανα των Μαρτύρων φυλάσσονται ακόμη και στη Μονή του Wiessenburg της Βοημίας, απ’ όπου το 1354 μ.Χ. ο Αυτοκράτορας Κάρολος Δ’ δώρισε μέρος τους στον Καθεδρικό Ναό του Αγίου Βίτου Πράγας.
