The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20.

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

The Reading is from Luke 8:26-39

At that time, as Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, there met him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me." For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. When the herdsmen saw what happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." Hilarion the Great

This Saint was born at Tabatha, near Gaza in Palestine, of pagan parents. Sent as a young man to Alexandria to be educated, he learned the Christian Faith and was baptized. While in Egypt he heard the fame of Saint Anthony the Great, and upon meeting that truly great man, the Father of monks, Saint Hilarion determined to devote himself also to the ascetical life. He returned to Gaza, when, he gave himself over to extreme fasting and unceasing prayer. Because of the miracles which he soon began to work, he found himself compelled by his growing renown to leave Gaza, to escape from the throngs of people coming to ask his prayers. In his journeys he visited Egypt, and came again with longing to the place where Saint Anthony had lived; but he was not able to remain in any one place for long, since despite all his attempts to conceal himself, the light of the grace that was in him could not be hid. After passing through Egypt and Libya, and sailing to Sicily, he came at last to Cyprus, where he ended the course of his life at the age of eighty, in the year 372.

The Holy Great Martyr Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer

Saint Demetrius was a Thessalonian, a most pious son of pious and noble parents, and a teacher of the Faith of Christ. When Maximian first came to Thessalonica in 290, he raised the Saint to the rank of Duke of Thessaly. But when it was discovered that the Saint was a Christian, he was arrested and kept bound in a bath-house. While the games were under way in the city, Maximian was a spectator there. A certain friend of his, a barbarian who was a notable wrestler, Lyaeus by name, waxing haughty because of the height and strength of his body, boasted in the stadium and challenged the citizens to a contest with him. All that fought with him were defeated. Seeing this, a certain youth named Nestor, aquaintance of Demetrius', came to the Saint in the bath-house and asked his blessing to fight Lyaeus single-handed. Receiving this blessing and sealing himself with the sign of the precious Cross, he presented himself in the stadium, and said, "O God of Demetrius, help me!" and straightway he engaged Lyaeus in combat and smote him with a mortal blow to the heart, leaving the former boaster lifeless upon the earth. Maximian was sorely grieved over this, and when he learned who was the cause of this defeat, he commanded straightway and Demetrius was pierced with lances while he was yet in the bath-house, As for Nestor, Maximian commanded that he be slain with his own sword.

Sunday's Sermon

LUKE’S 6TH SUNDAY

              Today we heard in St. Luke’s holy Gospel, a reading where he describes Christ’s meeting with the demoniac man in the country of the Gadarenes. Our Lord met this man who was insane and who was possessed and ruled by the demons and felt sympathy and compassion for him and cured him by expelling the demons.

Let us pay attention to the dialogue between Christ and the possessed man. The man asks: “What kind of relationship will you have with us? Did you come here to torment us and send us to the abyss?”

My brothers and sisters, those were the words that were spoken by the demons, who were hiding inside the man, and which as we hear were many, a whole legion. They recognized in the face of Jesus the Almighty Son of God. The One who will ban them from this world completely with His second coming and send them to the abyss.

St. Gregory the Palamas says that the eternal punishment for devil consists of his total immobilization, and the abolishment of all his cunning acts so that he can cause no more evil to the world. This is why those demons became fearful and worried that they would be punished as of then, and therefore begged Christ to be allowed to take over a herd of swine in order to temporarily escape His punishment. The holy Fathers and specifically St. Maxim the Confessor states that man is constantly under demonic influences.  Demons affect all parts of our soul and body soul and body through thoughts, wishes and passions and occasionally may actually take over our  entire body and demonize man completely. The devil removes one’s clothing, their baptismal attire, he moves them out of their home, the church, and leads them to remain in the graves with the dead, with sins, and changes one’s self just as we see happening in today’s Gospel reading. Since we are been attacked continuously by demons, that appear to us in the form of passions and temptations, we ought to know that the invocation of Jesus Christ’s name is as powerful as His presence was in today’s reading. The Holy Fathers recommend therefore that we often pray with Jesus’ prayer in order to rid ourselves of the demons. St. John author of the Ladder, says to us: “Whip your enemies with Jesus’ prayer”.

The Gadarenes witnessed one of their fellow men become cured  and become sane again from his previous state of wild animal. However, they asked Christ to leave their country. Why do we think that is? They were fearful of Him. They understood that He exposed their unlawful act of raising pigs, an act forbidden by the Law and they felt that their freedom was threatened.  They could not accept what Christ had to offer them and they were content with their way of living. Both the demons and the Gadarenes were afraid of Christ and could not stand His presence.  The Gadarenes chose a way of life away from Christ, away from the Church, a way that leads to a life full of passions. They were afraid that Christ would ask them to overcome those passions, to renounce their lust for wealth and bodily satisfaction, to sacrifice something of their own for the benefit of their fellow men.

The formerly possessed man on the other hand, who was now dressed and sane and whose body and soul had just been salvaged from the demons, understands Christ’s Godliness and begs to follow Him and become His follower. Our Lord does not turn him away, and instructs him to become His disciple and to return to his town and family and spread the word of the greatness of God.

My brothers and sisters, the fact that our world is still chaotic is because of our lack of faith and our inability to accept Christ’s message. There are many who are possessed by demons even in our days. They are the ones who have severed their relationship with God and live in spiritual imbalance.

Can’t someone be thought of as possessed when he abandons his family-wife and children-to live up to temporary temptations?

What about those who suffer from alcoholism and drug addictions? And what about those who try so hard to portray perversion as something normal and who scoff at the teachings of the Gospel? All of us who gather in Church today we are like the cured man of today’s Gospel.

We need however to keep in the forefront of our mind Christ’s request to him: “Return to your own house and tell what great things God has done for you”. We are obliged to share with our fellow men our experiences and our life in the Church, in order to help them to understand and approach Christ. And the way that can be done is through our own example, through our way of living, if we have reached the point  of feeling God’s peace and love within us. This is what Christ asks of us in today’s Gospel: to live from now on in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Στ’ Κυριακή  Λουκά

(Θεραπεία του δαιμονισμένου)

              Ακούσαμε σήμερα στο άγιο ευαγγέλιο, στο 8ο κεφάλαιο του Ευαγγελιστή Λουκά, για τη συνάντηση που είχε ο Χριστός μας με τον δαιμονισμένο άνδρα στη χώρα των Γαδαρινών. Στη χώρα των Γαδαρινών ο Χριστός μας συναντήθηκε με αυτόν τον άνθρωπο τον οποίο οι δαίμονες είχαν κάνει υποχείριο τους και αφού ακολούθησε μια ολιγόλεπτη συζήτηση του Κυρίου μας με αυτούς, τους έδιωξε και θεράπευσε τον δαιμονισμένο.

Ας προσέξουμε λίγο το διάλογο του Χριστού μας με τον δαιμονισμένο. Εκείνος του λέει: «Τι εμοί και σοί Ιησού Υιέ του Θεού του Υψίστου;» Και όπως συμπληρώνει και ο Ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος: «Τι θέλεις; Ηλθες ώδε προ καιρού βασανίσαι ημας;», δηλαδή «Τι σχέση μπορεί να έχεις εσύ μαζί μας; Μήπως ήρθες να μας βασανίσεις, να μας στείλεις στην κόλαση πριν την ώρα μας;».

  Αδελφοί μου, αυτά είναι τα λόγια τα οποία ξεστόμισαν οι δαίμονες εκείνη την ώρα, οι οποίοι ήταν πολλοί, λεγεώνα ολόκληρη. Στο πρόσωπο του Ιησού αναγνώρισαν τον Υιό του Θεού, Εκείνον που όταν θα έλθει στην Δευτέρα παρουσία Του θα τους διώξει τελείως από τον κόσμο και θα τους στείλει στην κόλαση για να βασανίζονται αιώνια. Γι' αυτό φοβήθηκαν μήπως τιμωρηθούν από τώρα και τον παρακάλεσαν να τους επιτρέψει να καταφύγουν στους χοίρους για να γλιτώσουν προσωρινά από την τιμωρία του Χριστού. Οι Άγιοι Πατέρες και συγκεκριμένα ο Αγ. Μάξιμος, λέει ότι ο άνθρωπος βρίσκεται συνεχώς κάτω από την επιρροή και την πολεμική μανία των δαιμόνων . Οι δαίμονες ενεργούν σε όλα τα μέρη της ψυχής και του σώματος  διά των λογισμών, των επιθυμιών και των παθών, αλλά μερικές φορές καταλαμβάνουν και το σώμα του ανθρώπου και έτσι δαιμονίζεται ο άνθρωπος ολοκληρωτικά. 

Ο διάβολος αφαιρεί από τον άνθρωπο το ιμάτιο, δηλαδή τη στολή του βαπτίσματος, τον οδηγεί έξω από την οικία, δηλαδή έξω από την εκκλησία, τον κάνει να παραμένει στα μνήματα, δηλαδή στα νεκρά έργα  της αμαρτίας και τον αλλοτριώνει από τον εαυτό του. Η παρουσία όμως του Χριστού ήταν τρομακτική για τους δαίμονες που υπήρχαν μέσα σε εκείνο τον δυστυχισμένο άνθρωπο. Την ίδια μεγάλη αυτή δύναμη έχει και το Όνομα Του, το οποίο υποδηλώνει την παρουσία Του, γι’ αυτό και οι Πατέρες συνιστούν συχνά να προσευχόμαστε με την «ευχή του Ιησού» για να απαλλαγούμε από την καταδυνάστευση του διαβόλου.

Οι Γαδαρινοί, είδαν έναν δυστυχισμένο συνάνθρωπο τους να θεραπεύεται να ξαναγίνετα άνθρωπος από άγριο ζώο που τον είχαν καταντήσει τα δαιμόνια, αλλά Του ζήτησαν να φύγει από τη χώρα τους. Γιατί άραγε;

Τον φοβήθηκαν, είδαν ότι αποκάλυψε την παρανομία τους στο να εκτρέφουν χοίρους σε αντίθεση με το Μωσαϊκό νόμο που απαγόρευε την βρώση του χοιρινού, ένιωσαν ότι κινδυνεύει η ελευθερία τους. Αποδείχθηκαν ανίκανοι να προτιμήσουν το Χριστό από τα υλικά τους αγαθά.

Και Εκείνος, ο Οποίος δεν παραβιάζει το θέλημα του ανθρώπου και σέβεται το αυτεξούσιό μας, έφυγε. Με τον τρόπο αυτό, μακριά από το Χριστό, ο άνθρωπος απομακρύνεται από την Εκκλησία και ζει τη ζωή του όπως τη θέλει εκείνος, υποτασσόμενος στα πάθη του. Φοβάται τον Χριστό μήπως του ζητήσει να θυσιάσει τις αδυναμίες του, το κυνήγι του εύκολου πλουτισμού, τις σαρκικές απολαύσεις, τη θρέψη της ματαιοδοξίας, μήπως του ζητήσει να θυσιάσει κάτι από τα δικά του πλούτη και αγαθά για να βοηθήσει το συνάνθρωπό του.

Ο πρώην δαιμονισμένος  όμως «καθήμενος ιματισμένος και σωφρονών» με την ψυχή και το σώμα του λυτρωμένα από την καταδυνάστευση των δαιμόνων, κατανοεί τη Θεότητα του Χριστού και Του ζητάει να Τον ακολουθήσει, να γίνει ένας από τους μαθητές Του. Εκείνος δεν τον απορρίπτει αλλά του προτείνει να γίνει απόστολός Του απεσταλμένος με άλλο τρόπο. Να γυρίσει στην πόλη του και στην οικογένειά του και να διηγείται τα σωτηριώδη έργα Του θεού.

Αδελφοί μου, αν ο κόσμος μας σήμερα βρίσκεται σε αταξία φταίνε η απιστία μας και η άρνηση αποδοχής του Χριστού μας από τους συνανθρώπους μας. Σαν τον δαιμονισμένο άνδρα του Ευαγγελίου υπάρχουν πολλοί συνάνθρωποί μας. Είναι άτομα που έχουν διακόψει την πνευματική τους σχέση με τον θεό έχουν απομακρυνθεί από αυτόν και ζουν μέσα σε ψυχική  ανισορροπία. Δεν είναι άραγε δαιμονισμένος κάποιος που εγκατέλειψε την οικογένειά του, και τα παιδιά του για να απολαύσει πρόσκαιρες ηδονές; Εκείνος που αιχμαλωτίζεται από το αλκοόλ ή από τα ναρκωτικά και ξεπέφτει όπως ο δαιμονισμένος του Ευαγγελίου στο κατώτερο σημείο της ασχημοσύνης και της καταπτώσεως; Όσοι από τον τύπο ή την τηλεόραση επιχειρούν να προβάλουν κάθε διαστροφή, να κλονίσουν το θεσμό της οικογένειας ή να υποβαθμίσουν την παιδεία με παροχή φθηνών γνώσεων χωρίς παιδαγωγική σημασία γιατί οι ίδιοι δεν πιστεύουν στις αιώνιες αξίες και στην αλήθεια του Ελληνοχριστιανικού πολιτισμού τον οποίο προσπαθούν να γκρεμίσουν;Στον θεραπευμένο του Ευαγγελίου μοιάζουν οι μαθητές του Χριστού, δηλαδή όσοι είναι μαζεμένοι μέσα στην Εκκλησία. Ας αποφασίσουμε να υπακούμε στις εντολές Του. Σιγά-σιγά, θα πέφτουμε, θα αστοχούμε αλλά η μετάνοια θα μας σηκώνει από την πτώση ξανά και ξανά. Ας αγωνιζόμαστε να ελευθερωνόμαστε από τα πάθη μας και τις αδυναμίες μας. Αδελφοί μου, ο Χριστός ποτέ δεν μας ζητάει να κάνουμε περισσότερα από όσα μπορεί ο καθένας μας, ξέρει τα όριά μας και ξέρει να μας περιμένει. Αλλά προπάντων ποθεί να μας βοηθήσει να ανοίξουμε την πόρτα της Βασιλείας Του. Γι’ αυτό και μας είπε: «κρούετε και ανοιγήσεται, ζητείτε και δοθήσεται».

Εμείς πρέπει να έχουμε στο νου μας την εντολή που έδωσε Εκείνος στον πρώην δαιμονισμένο: «Επίστρεψε στον οίκο σου και διηγήσου όσα σου έκαμε ο Θεός». Δηλαδή να μαρτυρούμε στους συνανθρώπους μας όσα  ζούμε στο χώρο της εκκλησίας, για να τους βοηθήσουμε να πλησιάσουν και εκείνοι το Χριστό. Και αυτό γίνεται με το παράδειγμά μας, με τη βιωτή μας, αν εμείς έχουμε τάξη στον εαυτό μας, στην οικογένεια μας και στις σχέσεις μας με τους άλλους. Αυτή είναι η αποστολή την οποία μας ανέθεσε ο Κύριος: να εκφράζουμε με τη ζωή μας τι σημαίνει η Βασιλεία των Ουρανών.
