Prayer

Open, O doors and bolts of my heart, that Christ the King of Glory may enter! Enter, O my Light, and enlighten my darkness; Enter, O my Light, and enlighten my darkness; Enter, O my Life, and resurrect my deadness; Enter, O my Physician, and heal my wounds; Enter O Divine Fire, and burn up the thorns of my sins; Ignite my inward parts and my heart with the flame of Your love; Enter, O my King, and destroy in me the kingdom of sin; Sit on the throne of my heart and alone reign in me, O You, my King and Lord! Amen.

From our Pastoral Assistant Stavros

Excerpt from Chapter “First Epistle- For Beginners” from the book “Epistles- Elder Paisios of Mount Athos”.

"Monks do not only pray for the living and the dead but even for the most miserable creatures, the demons, who, unfortunately, even though thousands of years have passed, have become worse and have progressed in their evilness.

Once a monk felt much pain and, while he was kneeling at prayer, he said the following:  “You are God and, if You want, You can find a way to save these miserable demons who first enjoyed such great glory, but now are full of all the evilness and cunning of the world. Without Your protection, they would have devoured all human beings.” While he was saying these words, praying in pain, he saw a dog’s head next to him sticking out his tongue and mocking him. It seems that God allowed for this to happen in order to inform the monk that He is ready to accept the demons provided they repent, but they themselves do not want their salvation.

One realizes from this incident not only the great love of monks, which they receive as a type of boundless love that if of God, but also the love of God, which is ready to save the demons as well, in spite of the billions of crimes they have committed, if only they would repent.

For this reason, no sinner should ever despair, as long as he repents, for not only does he have fewer sins than the devil, but he is also excusable for he was fashioned from the soil and, out of carelessness, slipped and became mired in the mud.

We have no excuse, however, when we don’t want to repent and confess, but rather we prefer to remain stuck in the mud.

.. May the Good God enlighten us and give everyone good repentance that all people may become worthy of the Good Paradise. Amen.”"

Gospel and Epistle Readings

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Third Tone. Luke 1: 46-48.
My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
Verse: For he has regarded the humility of his servant.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Philippians 2:5-11.

Brethren, have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Third Tone.

Third Tone.

Gospel Reading

The Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary
The Reading is from Luke 10:38-42, 11:27-28

At that time, Jesus entered a village; and a woman called Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve you alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her." As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!" But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!"

The Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary

The Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Tone

O Lord, You have by Your Cross brought an end to death, and Paradise You have made open to the thief. You have transformed the laments of the myrrhbearers and sent forth your apostles, commanding that they proclaim that You are risen from death, O Christ our God, bestowing great mercy upon the universe.

Apolytikion for Dormition of the Theotokos in the First Tone

In giving birth, thou didst preserve thy virginity; in thy dormition, thou didst not forsake the world, O Theotokos. Thou wast translated unto life, since thou art the Mother of Life; and by thine intercessions dost thou redeem our souls from death.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone

Neither the grave nor death could contain the Theotokos, the unshakable hope, ever vigilant in intercession and protection. As Mother of life, He who dwelt in the ever-virginal womb transposed her to life.
